Trinity X-Country Teams Finish Eighth and 17th at New Englands

The Trinity College men's cross-country team took eighth place out of 31 teams and the women's squad came in 17th place at the NCAA Division III New England Championships on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

Junior Todd Markelz (Homer, AK) finished 14th overall with a career-best time of 25:07 to lead the Bantams. Markelz qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships on Saturday, Nov. 20 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Freshman Jim Emord (Bridgewater, MA) placed 31st with a time 25:39 and classmate Ryan Bak (Suffield, CT) ran a 25:52 to place 40th.

For the women, sophomore Caroline Leary (Bedford, MA) took 48th place with a time of 19:03 and freshman Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, MA) came in 56th with a time of 19:14.

Men's Soccer (13-4) Falls in ECAC Finals

The Trinity College men's soccer team adanced to the finals of the ECAC Division III New England Championship tournament last week. The Bantams defeated Plymouth State on Wednesday, 2-0, and Amherst on Saturday, 3-2 in overtime, only to suffer defeat in the final at the hands of the host and top-seeded Middlebury Panthers, 3-1, on Sunday.

Junior forward Brett MacQuarrie (Cohasset, MA) and freshman forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, MA) both scored in the first half to account for the Bantam goals versus Plymouth State. Junior goalkeeper Tom Hambrick-Stowe (Lancaster, PA) recorded his eighth shut out of the year with a three-save performance.

On Saturday, Trinity came back from a 2-0 deficit as Sandell put Trinity on the board in the second half and MacQuarrie scored the tying goal with just under 10 minutes remaining. Senior tri-captain midfielder Daniel Rudolph (Hingham, MA) put a penalty kick in the back of the net with four minutes remaining in overtime to propel the Bantams into the finals.

Against Middlebury, Trinity's only goal came on a header by junior midfielder Peter Trimble (Mashpee, MA) on a pass from junior midfielder Caley Iandiorio (Wayland, MA). The goal was the first of Trimble's Bantam career.

The Bantams finished with a 13-4 record, which is the most wins ever for a Trinity men's soccer season. In addition, Trinity coach Ed Mighten was named NESCAC Coach of the Year and Rudolph was named first team All-NESCAC . Senior forward Mike Wilson (Longmeadow, MA), Hambrick-Stowe, and freshman back Phil Flakes (Dedham, MA) were awarded second team All-NESCAC honors.
