Bayliss Nets No-No and Weekly Honors

Junior 3B Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) hit a two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning in the opening game against Bates, while junior infielder Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) keyed a three-run sixth inning with a two-run homer. Bantam sophomore right-hander Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) worked eight innings and struck out 10, and freshmen righty Mark Tremblay (Hooksett, N.H.) picked up his first career save, fanning all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.
In the first game of the Bates doubleheader, Trinity junior right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) tossed a 14-strikeout no-hitter, which was the first no-hitter recorded by a Bantam since Jonah’s older brother, Jarrett, fired one in 1997. Senior outfielder Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) smacked his third home run of the season for the Bantam offense.
In the final game of the three-game set against Bates, senior co-captain shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a double and Piantek belted another home run although the Bantams snapped an eight-game winning streak. Bayliss was named as the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 6 for his outstanding performance against Bates.
Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, is in second place in the NESCAC East with a 5-1 division record, and has the best overall record in the NESCAC at 14-4. Fries is ranked second in the league with a .472 batting average (17-36), while Piantek is sixth at .414 (29-70). Tidmarsh is ranked third in the NESCAC with a 1.16 ERA.
Trinity is ranked No. 5 in the New England Division III Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball New England regional rankings. The Bantams will visit state rival Western Connecticut on April 9, before visiting NESCAC East foe Colby on April 12 and in a doubleheader on April 13.

Softball (3-14, 1-3) Wins First in NESCAC
The Trinity College softball team lost, 7-1, against Clark on April 2 and, 10-2, at Coast Guard on April 4, before splitting a doubleheader with New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Bates, 1/4-5/1, on April 6.
Junior infielder Maureen Heneghan (Windsor, Conn.) collected two hits against Clark, which was ranked No. 27 in the nation entering the game, and freshman right-hander Marion-Anna Protano (Manalapan, N.J.) walked one and allowed one earned run in seven innings on the mound. At Coast Guard, ranked No. 28 in the nation, Trinity fell victim to the mercy rule after five innings.
In the first game against Bates, junior righty Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) scattered nine hits and allowed two earned runs with no walks in seven innings despite the loss. Bantam sophomore right-hander Lauren McDowell (Chilmark, Mass.) picked up her first win of the season in the second game, allowed just one unearned run, seven hits, and no walks. Trinity scored on an RBI single by junior shortstop Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) and three bases-loaded walks.
Trinity, coached by Tami Hyde, is currently in fourth place in the NESCAC East Division with a 1-3 league record. The Bantams will host state rival Eastern Connecticut in a doubleheader on April 9 and visit Williams on April 11, before welcoming NESCAC East rival Colby for a doubleheader on April 13.
Men’s Lacrosse (1-6, 1-2) Loses Pair of Road Games
The Trinity College men’s lacrosse team lost at Eastern Connecticut, 11-4, on April 3 and at NESCAC rival Colby, 7-2, on April 6.
At Eastern Connecticut, which was ranked No. 5 in New England entering the game, senior tri-captain Sean Rohan (South Hadley, Mass.) scored twice and junior attackman Ravi Pillay (Church Falls, Va.) had a pair of assists, while Bantam senior goalie Eric Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) added a season-high 17 saves.
Against Colby, which was ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 26 in the nation entering the game, Trinity freshman middie John Thach (Berwyn, Pa.) notched a goal and an assist and Wilson made eight saves in net.
Trinity, coached by Brian Silcott, is currently is sixth place in the NESCAC with a 1-2 league record.
The Bantams are ranked No. 12 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III poll. Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Amherst, ranked No. 8 in New England, on April 10 and league foe Williams, ranked No. 7 in New England and ranked No. 24 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III national poll, on April 13.
Women’s Lacrosse (6-2, 2-2) Falls to Even in NESCAC
The Trinity College women’s lacrosse lost to Amherst, 15-2, on April 3 and to Colby, 9-6, on April 6.
Against undefeated Amherst, which was ranked No. 2 in the nation entering the game, freshman attack Beatrice Gratry (Hunting Valley, Ohio) score both Trinity goals and senior tri-captain goaltender Kelly Jo Burnett (Pennington, N.J.) made 13 saves in a losing effort. Gratry netted four goals and senior tri-captain attack Anna Sullivan (Brookline, Mass.) had a goal and an assist against Colby, while Burnett made eight stops in net.
Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, is currently tied with Bates and Wesleyan for fifth place in the NESCAC with a 2-2 league record. Gratry and Sullivan are tied for second in the league in scoring with 33 points apiece. Gratry has a league-high 26 goals and seven assists and Sullivan has 25 goals and eight assists. Burnett is fourth in the NESCAC and No. 20 in the nation with a 6.75 GAA in goal. As a team, Trinity is ranked No. 25 in the nation in scoring (12.88 gpg), 14th nationally in scoring defense (6.13 gpg), and 12th in the nation in scoring margin (6.75 gpg).
The Bantams are ranked No. 19 in the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Division III national poll and No. 21 in the Brine/Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll. Trinity will visit Wheaton (Mass.) on April 11 and league foe Williams, ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division III New England regional poll and No. 8 in both national polls, on April 13.
Men’s Tennis (8-0) Remains Perfect Under Hallagan
The Trinity College men’s tennis team kept its perfect record intact, despite a 17-day layoff, with a 5-2 win over Drew on April 6 and a 4-3 triumph against Amherst on April 7.
Sophomore Csaba Godry (Budapest, Hungary) won two singles matches in straight sets at the No. 3 position and senior tri-captain Muammar Khan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) posted a pair of straight-set victories at No. 4 singles in the matches. Drew was ranked No. 15 in the Northeast region and Amherst was No. 5 in the Northeast and No. 19 in the nation entering the matches.
Godry leads Trinity with a perfect 8-0 singles record, while Khan is 8-1. Sophomore Richard Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario), the No. 6-ranked player in the Northeast and the No. 22 player in the nation, is 8-2, and classmate Scott Levy (Waban, Mass.) is 7-2. Khan and Lawrence, ranked No. 6 in the Northeast among doubles tandems, is 8-3 for the season.
Trinity, coached by Rob Hallagan in his first season, is ranked No. 4 in the Northeast region and No. 15 in the nation by the Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. Trinity will host Connecticut College on April 9 and Tufts, ranked No. 8 in the Northeast, on April 10, before visiting MIT, ranked No. 2 in the Northeast and No. 8 in the nation, on April 12. The Bantams will finish the week hosting Bates, ranked No. 6 in the Northeast and No. 24 in the nation, on April 14.
Women’s Tennis (9-3) Wins Home and Away
The Trinity College women’s tennis team defeated Middlebury, 5-2, on April 2 and won at MIT, 4-3, on April 6.
Freshman Diana Dreyfus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and sophomore Mimi Krueger (Burlington, Vt.) won two singles matches each, at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, and combined to post a pair of doubles triumphs against Middlebury and MIT. Middlebury was ranked No. 6 in the Northeast and No. 22 in the nation entering its match, while MIT was the No. 11 team in New England entering the weekend.
Bantam sophomore Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.), 12-6 in singles this season, is the No. 6-ranked player in the Northeast region and No. 22 in the nation, while senior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.), 9-4 in singles this season, is the No. 26-ranked player in the Northeast.
Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett, is ranked No. 4 in the East region and No. 13 in the nation by the Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings. Trinity will visit Smith on April 13 and host Bowdoin, ranked No. 5 in the Northeast and No. 15 in the nation, on April 14 at the Newington Tennis Club.
Track and Field Hosts Bantam Invitational
The Trinity College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams hosted and competed well in the annual Bantam Invitational at Jesse/Miller Field on April 6.
Men’s junior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) won the 800-meter run at 1:56.73 and the mile run in 4:11.03, while sophomore Kristina DePeau (Stafford, Conn.) shined for the women’s squad with a first-place performance in the 10,000 meters (37:43.61). Men’s junior Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) gave Trinity a sweep of the 10,000 with a first-place time of 32:16.77.
Women’s senior tri-captain Jennifer Villa (Hyannisport, Mass.) finished a strong third in the triple jump with a distance of 34’06.00", while men’s senior Nick Fox (Dublin, N.H.) and sophomore Chris Madison (Chatham, N.Y.) finished third in the hammer throw (146’03.00”) and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (57.82 s), respectively for the Bantams.
The men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will compete in the United States Merchant Marine Academy Invitational at King’s Point on April 14. King’s Point is coached by former Trinity assistant Gary Gardner.
Women’s Rowing Finishes Third in San Diego
The Trinity College women’s varsity rowing team finished third in the Women’s Collegiate Division II/III race of the San Diego Crew Classic on April 6 and 7.
The Bantams finished the Grand Final on Sunday with a time of 7:12.46, around eight seconds behind second place and ahead of fourth. Trinity also finished third in the preliminary race on Saturday. The Bantams, captained by seniors Katherine Fredlund (Wynnewood, Pa.), Sarah Melnitsky (Dedham, Mass.), and Molly Roach (Salt Lake City, Utah), finished ahead of Puget Sound, ranked No. 26 in the nation entering the Classic, on both days.
Trinity, coached by Erica Schwab, is ranked No. 13 in the U.S. Rowing Collegiate Coaches national poll. The Bantams will row against Division I Holy Cross, Mount Holyoke, ranked No. 11 in the nation, and Smith, ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division III New England regional poll and No. 6 in the nation, at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. on April 13.
Men’s Rowing Opens Season
The Trinity College men’s varsity rowing team opened its 2002 season with a loss at Coast Guard on April 6. The Bantam varsity eight crew finished the race at 6:17.44, which was eight seconds behind that of the Coast Guard Academy. The Trinity co-captains are seniors Stephen Baxter (Englewood, Colo.) and James Cabot (South Harpswell, Maine).
Trinity, coached by Steven Fluhr, is ranked No. 25 in the Collegiate Coaches Men’s Open national poll. The Bantams will row against Holy Cross and Massachusetts at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. on April 13.
