Bak Earns All-American in Two Events for Indoor Track and Field

 

The Trinity College men’s indoor track and field finished 13th at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Ohio Northern on March 8 and 9.

Junior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) won the 1,500-meter run and finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run to account for all the Trinity points in the meet. He finished the 1,500-meter trials on Friday with the best time of the field at 3:53.66, which was over five seconds better than the second-best runner.

On Saturday, Bak won the race with a time of 3:52.31, edging the second-place runner by .42 seconds. In the 5,000 meters, which took place less than two hours after the 1,500 meters was completed, Bak finished seventh with a time of 14:51.51. He was named an All-American in both events. By himself, Bak collected 12 points for Trinity, tying the Bantams with three other teams for 13th place in the Championships and finishing second of all the New England schools.

The men’s and women’s outdoor track and field season will begin on Mar. 23, when the teams will compete in the Disney Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Softball (1-1) Splits Opening Games in Florida

The Trinity College softball team lost its season opener against Brockport State, 9-2, but defeated Framingham State, 9-7, in its second game. Both games were played on Mar. 17 as part of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Junior first baseman Maureen Heneghan (Windsor, Conn.) went 4-for-7 in the two games, and freshman Alexandra Blumer (Washington, D.C.) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in her collegiate debut. McDermott allowed just eight hits and one earned run over seven innings to earn the win on the mound against Framingham State.

Trinity, coached by Tami Hyde, currently has the second-best overall record in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division at 1-1. The Bantams will continue play in the Cusic Classic with games against Lasell and Oneonta State on Mar. 18, Keene State and Wesleyan on Mar. 19, St. Lawrence and Mass.-Dartmouth on Mar. 21 and Slippery Rock and Grinnell on Mar. 21.

Baseball (4-0) Starts Out Perfect

The Trinity College baseball team swept Roger Williams, 18-7, and 14-5, in its season opening doubleheader on Mar. 16, and blanked Babson, 5-0, and 9-0, in a twinbill on Mar. 17. The games were all part of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.

Bantam junior right-hander Craig Tredenick (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island) allowed three hits and three runs over five innings with seven strikeouts to record the victory in the first game. Senior co-captain Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.) totaled five hits and four runs, while pitching six innings to post the victory on the mound in the second game against Roger Williams. Junior third baseman Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) went 3-for-4 with two runs, junior catcher Rob Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.) and senior outfielder Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) each were 2-for-3 with two RBI, and freshman catcher Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio) went 2-for-2 in his collegiate debut.

In the two games, Fries had five hits in seven at-bats with three RBI and three runs, while Dorr went 5-for-7 with four runs and two RBI. Trinity freshmen Aaron Goldstein (Edina, Minn.), Matt Engster (Glastonbury, Conn.), and Robert O’Leary (Milton, Mass.) each had hits in their collegiate debuts.

Junior right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) and sophomore righty Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) each pitched a shutout against Babson. Bayliss allowed four hits and struck out 11 in the first game, and Tidmarsh struck out eight in a three-hitter in the nightcap.

Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, currently has the best overall record in the NESCAC at 4-0. The Bantams will continue play in the Cusic Classic with doubleheaders against St. Lawrence on Mar. 19, Plymouth State on Mar. 21 and Southern Maine, which is ranked No. 7 in the nation, on Mar. 22.

Men’s Lacrosse (0-1) Loses Opener at Gettysburg

The Trinity College men’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener at Gettsyburg, 19-4, on Mar. 16.

Against Gettysburg, which was ranked No. 2 in the nation entering the game, senior midfielder Peter Rogers (Southington, Conn.) scored two goals, and classmate Eric Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) made eight saves in net.

Trinity, coached by Brian Silcott, are currently tied with Williams for the ninth-best overall record in the NESCAC at 0-1. The Bantams are ranked No. 9 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III poll. Trinity will play at Lynchburg, ranked No. 18 in the nation, on Mar. 19 and Salisbury, ranked No. 10 in the nation, on Mar. 21.
