MacKinnon Nabs League andNational Honors for Women’s Ice Hockey (4-12, 3-11) The Trinity College women’s ice hockey team lost, 3-2, against NESCAC rival Middlebury on Feb. 9, but rebounded with a 3-2 victory against league foe Williams on Feb. 10.

Against Middlebury, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation entering the game, junior forward Katelyn Bowman (Summit, N.J.) scored twice and sophomore goalie Mimi MacKinnon (Glen Cove, N.Y.) kept Trinity in the game with 40 saves on the day.
Freshman Kristy Hadeka (Castleton, Vt.) had two goals and an assist in the win over Williams, which was ranked No. 9 in the nation entering the game. Bowman also scored for Trinity, and MacKinnon turned aside 44 shots. Trinity overcame a 2-1 deficit in the third period en route to the triumph.
MacKinnon was named as the NESCAC Player of the Week and the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) Division III Defensive Player of the Week for her outstanding performance over the weekend. MacKinnon totaled 83 saves with a .933 save percentage against nationally-ranked Middlebury and Williams.
Trinity, coached by Katie Busniuk, is currently in seventh place in the NESCAC with a 4-12 league record.
The Bantams will host Salve Regina on Fri., Feb. 15 and Division I Holy Cross on Sat., Feb. 16 in the final game of the 2001-02 regular season. With its NESCAC season completed one week earlier than the rest of the conference, the Bantams will need some assistance from other schools to qualify for the inaugural NESCAC Championship Tournament and its first-ever post-season. Trinity could finish in a tie with Hamilton and/or Connecticut College for the sixth and/or seventh spots, but, due to its win over Williams last week, has the edge over both in the league’s tie-breaking formula. The top seven finishers of the NESCAC regular season qualify for the league’s post-season championship tournament. The winner of the NESCAC Championship Tournament qualifies automatically for the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The top seed in the tourney field receives a bye to the semi-final round and will host the semi-final and final rounds on Mar. 2 and 3. The second, third, and fourth seeds will host quarter-final games on Feb. 23 against the seventh, sixth, and fifth seeds, respectively.
Men’s Basketball (15-4, 6-1) Moves Up to First in NESCAC
The Trinity College men’s basketball team defeated NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 71-68, on Feb. 8 and league foe Wesleyan, 72-65, on the road on Feb. 9 to increase its winning streak to three games.
Senior tri-captain swingman Colin Tabb (Somers, Conn.) notched a game-high 27 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and four steals in the win against Connecticut College. Tabb made seven out of 10 shots from the field and 11 out of 12 from the foul line to account for his 27 points, while senior tri-captain forward Bryan Dion (East Haven, Conn.) finished with 15 points and 10 boards for the Bantams.
Tabb scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down 11 boards, sinking all 10 of his foul shots, the next day at Wesleyan. Junior forward Ryan Uszenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) added 22 points, making seven out of nine shots from the field, four assists, and four steals, while Dion chipped in with 12 points for the Bantams.
Tabb was named to the NESCAC honor roll for his performance last week, after averaging 25.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 steals. He made 21 out of 22 free throws in the two games.
Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, is currently in first place in the NESCAC with a 6-1 league record. Tabb leads the league in scoring with 24.7 ppg and free throw shooting with an 86.9 percentage (133-153). He is also fifth in assists with 4.1 per game, sixth in rebounding with 7.5 per game, and ninth in three-point shooting with a 38.0 percentage (49-129). Tabb’s point total also put him fifth in the nation in scoring. Dion is second in the NESCAC rankings in rebounding with 9.3 per game, fourth in field goal shooting with a 52.5 percentage (124-236), and 10th in scoring at 16.4 ppg, while senior tri-captain Matt Jones (Meriden, Conn.) is fourth in the league in assists at 4.4 per contest. As a team, Trinity is third in the league in field goal shooting at 47.0 percent (535-1,139).
Trinity is currently ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division III Northeast regional poll and No. 35 in the d3hoops.com National Poll. Women’s Basketball (12-9, 5-2) Travels to Maine for Crucial Weekend
The Trinity College women’s basketball team lost to Salve Regina, 59-57, on Feb. 5, but routed NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 98-43, on Feb. 8 on the road, before dropping a 47-41 decision against league foe Wesleyan on Feb. 9.
Against Salve Regina, junior center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) totaled nine points and 10 rebounds in the first half and led all scorers with 18 points, while grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior guard Alison Hadden (Drexel Hill, Pa.) added 15 points for the Bantams.
McCloskey scored a game-high 20 points at Connecticut College, while Hadden totaled 16 points, sinking all four of her three-point tries, and freshman forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Freshman forward Rebecca Bell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 11 points and five boards off the bench. In the Wesleyan game, McCloskey paced Trinity with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while McCaffrey added 10 points and nine boards
McCloskey was named to the NESCAC honor roll for her play in the three games last week. She averaged 16.7 points and 9.3 rebounds, while shooting 60.0 percent from the field (21-35) and 73.0 percent from the foul line (8-11).
Trinity, coached by Maureen Pine, is currently tied with Bates for fourth place in the NESCAC at 5-2. McCloskey leads the league in scoring at 19.1 ppg, rebounding at 10.8 per game, and field goal shooting at 59.2 percent (168-284). McCloskey’s totals also put her 21st in the nation in scoring, 30th in rebounding, and 14th in field goal shooting. Senior co-captain guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass.) is second in the league and 18th in the nation in assists with 5.3 per game, McCaffrey is third in the NESCAC steals with 2.3 per game, seventh in rebounding at 7.0 per game, and eighth in assists with 3.1 per contest.

Men’s Ice Hockey (12-7-1, 10-5-1) Vies for Home Playoff Game
The Trinity College men’s ice hockey team lost to NESCAC rival Middlebury, 3-2, on Feb. 8, but rebounded to defeat league foe Williams, 4-1, on Feb. 9.
Against Middlebury, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation and undefeated in the league entering the game, sophomore forward Daniel Gyllstrom (Hudson, Mass.) and freshman forward Joseph Ori (Niles, Ill.) provided the Trinity goals Ori assisted Gyllstrom on his goal, while senior goalie Geoffrey Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) turned aside 30 shots in the loss for the Bantams.
Ori recorded his first career hat trick the next day against Williams, which was ranked No. 12 in the nation entering the game. Senior defenseman Martins Lans (Carnikava, Latvia) netted the other Trinity goal, while Gyllstrom assisted on three scores and freshman forward Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) notched two assists. Faulkner made 26 saves in net.
Trinity, coached by John Dunham, is currently in sixth place in the NESCAC with an 10-5-1 league record. Senior goalie Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) is third in the league with a 1.92 GAA in net. Ori was named to the NESCAC honor roll for his play against Middlebury and Williams, totaling four goals and an assist in the two games.
The Bantams will visit Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East rival Massachusetts College on Tue., Feb. 12 to finish the suspended game from earlier this month. Trinity holds a 4-1 lead with a little over a period left to play. Trinity will finish the regular season on the road with trips to NESCAC rivals Connecticut College on Fri., Feb. 15 and Tufts on Sat., Feb. 16. With three games remaining, the Bantams could finish as high as third or as low as sixth. The top seven finishers of the NESCAC regular season qualify for the league’s post-season championship tournament. Men’s Squash (13-0) Has 4-0 Week
The Trinity College men’s squash team defeated Brown, 9-0, on Feb. 5, won at Hobart, 9-0, on Feb. 8, and blanked Rochester and Hamilton, both 9-0, in Rochester, N.Y. on Feb. 9.
Freshman phenoms Bernardo Samper (Bogota, Colombia), Regardt Schonborn (Bloemfontein, South Africa), and Vishual Kapoor (Mumrai, India) posted 3-0 victories at the No. 1,. No. 6, and No. 8 positions, respectively, each without allowing a single point in the entire match, against Brown, which was ranked No. 8 in the nation entering the match.
Schonborn dominated in his three matches, allowing just one points scored against him in all, against Hobart, Rochester, and Hamilton. Trinity played the same nine players in each match. Juniors Nickolas Kyme (Pembroke, Bermuda), Jonathan Smith (Leeds, England), Carl Baglio (Toronto, Ontario), and Thaddeus Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Kapoor and fellow freshman Taylor Robinson (Brookville, N.Y.) all won three matches by scores of 3-0.
Trinity boasts seven of the top 20 players in the nation, led by Samper at No. 1 and sophomore Michael Ferreira (Stamford, England) at No. 2. Smith is ranked No. 4, senior co-captain Lefika Ragontse (Gaborone, Botswana) is No. 7, Kyme is No. 8, senior Rohan Bhappu (Singapore) is No. 17, and sophomore Nadeem Osman (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) is No. 20.
Trinity, coached by Paul Assaiante, is ranked No. 1 in the National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association (NISRA) national poll. The Bantams will host Wesleyan on Wed., Feb. 13, Williams, ranked No. 5 in the nation, on Thu., Feb. 14, before finishing the regular season at No. 2-ranked Princeton on Sat., Feb. 16.

Women’s Squash (8-0) Has Second Straight Perfect Dual Match Season
The Trinity College women’s squash team defeated Brown, 9-0, on Feb. 5 and won at Cornell on Feb. 9, 9-0.
Senior co-captains Mollie Anderson (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Samantha Lewins (Bromley, Zimbabwe) and freshman Bronwyn Cooper (Harare, Zimbabwe) posted 3-0 victories at the No. 1,. No. 2, and No. 3 positions, respectively, against Brown, which was ranked No. 5 in the nation entering the match.
Freshman Lynn Leong (Kota Bharu, Malaysia) dominated in her 3-0 victory at No. 2, allowing just three points scored against her in the entire match, Cornell, which ranked No. 8 in the nation entering the contest. The Bantams finished the 2001-02 dual match season with a perfect record (8-0) for the second straight year.
Trinity boasts seven of the top 40 players in the nation, led by Helal at No. 1 and Leong at No. 2. Bantam sophomore Pam Saunders (Harare, Zimbabwe) is ranked No. 5, Anderson is No. 21, Austin is No. 27, Lewins is No. 33, and Cooper is No. 34.
Helal leads Trinity with a 9-0 record this season, while Leong is 10-1, freshman Meridy Vollmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) is 10-2, sophomore Carolynne Minkowksi (Baltimore, Md.) is 9-2, and Cooper is 8-2. All five were undefeated in dual matches, combining for 33 victories among them. As a team, Trinity players have won 97 out of 124 matches this season, including 64 out of 71 dual matches.
Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett will compete in the WISA Team Championships (Howe Cup) from Fri., Feb. 15 thru Sun., Feb. 17 at Yale. Trinity is seeded No. 1 in the eight-team field.
Wrestling (12-13) Finishes Dual Season With Two Wins
The Trinity College wrestling team defeated Division II American International on the road on Feb. 6, 24-22, but lost to Wesleyan, 29-6, in the tri-match in Springfield, Mass. Trinity also defeated Bridgewater State, 25-15, and Rhode Island College, 20-18, on Feb. 9.
Junior Mark Foresi (West Springfield, Mass.) won matches at 141 and 157 pounds against American International and Wesleyan, which was ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 28 in the nation, entering the match. Junior Eric Egolf (Glastonbury, Conn.) won at 149 pounds against in the Wesleyan match, and sophomore Wesley Connell (Simsbury, Conn.) won his 174-pound bout against American International. Five of Wesleyan’s wins over Trinity were by four points or less.
Freshman David Bucco (Paramus, N.J.) won matches at 157 and 165 pounds, with a pin in his 157-pound bout against Bridgewater State and Rhode Island College, which was ranked No. 10 in New England entering the match. Foresi and Connell each won two matches on the day for the Bantams as well, as Trinity finished its 2001-02 dual season.
Trinity boasts four of the top six wrestlers in their respective weight classes. Foresi is ranked No. 2 at 141 pounds, and sophomore Michael Doros (East Hartford, Conn.) is No. 3 at 184 pounds, while Connell and Bucco are No. 5 at 165 pounds and 157 pounds, respectively.
Trinity, coached by Sebastian Amato, is ranked No. 8 in the New England Division III Coaches’ Poll. The Bantams will compete in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Championships this weekend at Springfield. The individual winners of each weight class, plus a handful of wild cards, will advance to the NCAA Division III Championships in March. Foresi has qualified for Nationals in each of the past two seasons, earning All-American honors last winter.

Swimming and Diving (M0-9, W3-7) Splits Against Clark
The Trinity College women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams each competed against Clark on Feb. 9. The Bantam women won, 123-119, but the Trinity men lost, 118-91.
Sophomores Julia Kaye (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) won two individual events and swam a leg of the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay squad in the win over Clark. Kaye teamed with sophomore Caroline Molitor (Berwyn, Pa.) and freshmen Elizabeth Ramaley (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and Brianne Barrett (Haverhill, Mass.) to win the race with a time of 3:56.15. Kaye also finished first in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 18:39.74 (team-best time this season) and the 500-yard free in 5:32. 05, while Molitor won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.03. The Clark meet was the last of the regular season for the Bantam women.
For the Bantam men, junior Jesse Hammond (New London, Conn.) took first in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, while the 400-yard freestyle relay quartet of senior Michael Tobin (Upper Montclair, N.J.), juniors Maurice Lee (Wayne, Pa.) and Ryan Bares (New Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Mark Silva (Scarsdale, N.Y.) also emerged victorious.
The Trinity 400-yard medley relay squads posted the best Trinity times of the season against Clark. The women’s foursome, consisting of freshman Katherine Mortensen (Bedford, Mass.), sophomores Jennifer Bartlett (Marblehead, Mass.), and Elizabeth Stoker (Westwood, Mass.), and senior co-captain Katie Lafleur (Belchertown, Mass) swam a time of 4:25.04 in the event. The men’s quartet, consisting of Hammond, senior captain Christian Sterling (Glastonbuty, Conn.), junior Chris Rorer (Villanova, Pa.), and freshman Matt DeRosa (Setauket, N.Y.) finished with a time of 3:47.62.
Kaye and Stoker have each posted the team’s top time in four events this season, while Bartlett and Mortensen have each posted the team’s top time in three events. Stoker finished the 50-yard freestyle in 26.35, the 100-yard freestyle in 57.49, the 50-yard butterfly in 29.80, and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.63. Kaye posted times of 2:03.56 in the 200-yard freestyle, 5:24.97 in the 500-yard freestyle, 11:06.19 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, and 18:39.74 in the 1,650-yard frestyle. Bartlett swam a times of 35.16 in the 50-yard breaststroke, 1:15.31 in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 2:39.30 in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Mortensen had times of 30.08 in the 50-yard backstroke, 1:05.18 in the 100-yard backstroke, and 2:25.65 in the 200-yard backstroke.
For the men’s team, Rorer and Sterling have both posted the team-best time in five events, while Hammond has posted team-best times in four events, and DeRosa in three. Rorer finished the 50-yard breaststroke in 29.88, the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.23, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.54, the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.57, and the 400-yard individual medley in 4:32.96. Sterling swam a 1:53.10 in the 200-yard freestyle, a 5:09.99 in the 500-yard freestyle, a 10:24.76 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, a 17:31.69 in the 1.650-yard freestyle, and a 2:06.50 in the 200-yard butterfly. Hammond finished the 50-yard freestyle in 22.31, the 100-yard freestyle in 50.03, the 50-yard butterfly in 25.79, and the 100-yard butterfly in 58.03, while DeRosa posted a 26.89 in the 50-yard backstroke, a 57.78 in the 100-yard backstroke, and a 2:06.70 in the 200-yard backstroke.
The Trinity men will host Worcester Tech on Sat., Feb. 16.
Bak Breaks Mile Record at Valentine’s Meet for Indoor Track
The Trinity College women’s and men’s indoor track and field teams competed in the Smith College Coed Invitational on Feb. 9, although a handful of competitors traveled to Boston for the Valentine’s Classic at Boston University.
Junior men’s tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) finished second in the mile run at Boston, qualifying automatically for the NCAA Division III National Championships and setting a new Trinity record with a time of 4:08.49.
Trinity is ranked nationally in both the 2002 M-F Company Women’s and Men’s Indoor Track and Field national polls. The Bantam women are ranked No. 16 and the men are No. 22. The Trinity women will compete in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships on Sat., Feb. 16 at Southern Maine, and the men will compete in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships at Bates on the same day.
