Wrestling (3-4) Finishes 2-2 The Trinity College wrestling team posted a 2-2 record in its four matches at the 2002 North/South Duals Wrestling Classic, which they hosted on Jan. 5. The Bantams defeated Southern Maine, 22-19, and Ursinus, 18-17, but fell to Muhlenberg, 25-21, and York (Pa.), 27-9, in the second and fourth rounds, respectively. |

Freshman 157-pounder David Bucco (Paramus, N.J.) led the Bantams, winning three of his four matches on the day. Sophomore Wesley Connell (Simsbury, Conn.) also went 3-1 in the 165-pound weight class, as did freshman 174-pounder Oded Carmi (Framingham, Mass.), while sophomore Michael Doros (East Hartford, Conn.) finished 3-0 at 184 pounds.
Bucco, Carmi, and freshman 197-pounder Matt Webster (Foxboro, Mass.) lead Trinity in wins with eight apiece. Bucco and Carmi are 8-3 and Webster is 8-4 with a team-high three pins. Doros is 7-2 and Connell is 6-1, while junior All-American Mark Foresi (West Springfield, Mass.), who missed the North/South Duals with an infecton, is 5-3.
Men’s Basketball (7-2) Beats Occidental in CaliforniaThe Trinity College men’s basketball team lost to Pomona-Pitzer, 64-56, in the first round of the Occidental Holiday Classic on Jan. 4, but rebounded to defeat tournament host Occidental, 72-65, the next evening.
Senior tri-captain swingman Colin Tabb (Somers, Conn.) had 17 points and senior tri-captain forward Bryan Dion (East Haven, Conn.) added 15 points and 10 rebounds against Pomona-Pitzer. The Bantams were playing their first game in 27 days.
Against Occidental, who had not lost to a Division III opponent in nine tries entering the game, Tabb notched game-high totals of 28 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists while sinking nine out of 10 free throws. Junior forward Ryan Uzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) had a season-high 18 points for the Bantams.
Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, is currently tied with Amherst for the third-best overall record in the NESCAC at 7-2. Tabb is second in the league in scoring with 23.6 ppg and in free throw shooting with a 80.7 percentage (46-57), tied for fifth in steals with 2.1 per contest, and sixth in rebounding with 8.1 per game. Dion is atop the NESCAC rankings in rebounding with 9.9 per game, fourth in blocked shots with 1.4 per game, and 10th in scoring at 16.5 ppg, while Days is second in the NESCAC with 2.0 blocked shots per contest.
Women’s Basketball (5-2) Defeats Hunter
The Trinity College women’s basketball defeated Hunter, 62-43, on Jan. 6. Freshman forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) had 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds against Hunter, while senior guard Alison Hadden (Drexel Hill, Pa.) scored all 15 of her points in the first half and added seven assists and three steals.
Trinity, coached by Maureen Pine, is currently tied with Tufts for the fourth-best overall record in the NESCAC at 5-2. Junior center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) leads the league in scoring at 21.0 ppg, rebounding at 11.7 per game, and field goal shooting at 58.0 percent (58-100). Senior co-captain guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass.) is third in the league in assists with 5.4 per game, McCaffrey is third in the NESCAC in rebounding at 9.4 per game, Hadden is fifth in assists with 4.7 per game, and senior swing player McKenzie Corby (Bethel, Conn.) is tied for fifth in steals with 2.4 per contest.
Men’s Ice Hockey (5-5, 3-3) Falls at Hamilton in Overtime
The Trinity College men’s ice hockey team lost at NESCAC rival Hamilton, 3-2, in overtime on Jan. 4. Senior defenseman Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, Mich.) and freshman forward Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) scored the Bantam goals, while senior goaltender Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) had 28 saves.
Trinity, coached by John Dunham, is currently in seventh place in the NESCAC with a 3-3 league record. Faulkner is third in the league with a 2.23 GAA in net, and senior co-captain forward Matt Greason (North Bridgton, Maine) is tied for eighth in the league in scoring with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points.
