McCloskey Earns NEWBA Co-Player of the Week for Women's Basketball (4-2) The Trinity College women’s basketball dropped a 68-65 game at Clark on Dec. 4 but rebounded to defeat Smith, 64-48, on Dec. 6 to finish the fall semester. Junior center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) led all scorers at Clark with 25 points, sinking 11 out of 14 shots from the field, and added a game-high 14 rebounds. Senior swing player McKenzie Corby (Bethel, Conn.) added 12 points for the Bantams. |

McCloskey again had game-highs in points and rebounds against Smith, scoring 22 points and grabbing 13 boards. Senior co-captain guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass.) netted 15 points and Corby notched eight rebounds, four assists, and five steals.
Trinity, coached by Maureen Pine, is currently tied with Amherst and Wesleyan for the fifth-best overall record in the NESCAC at 4-2. McCloskey leads the league in scoring at 23.8 ppg, rebounding at 12.2 per game, and field goal shooting at 60.0 percent (57-95). She is also third in the conference in blocked shots with 1.2 per contest. Dullea is fourth in the league in assists with 4.7 per game, while McCaffrey is sixth in the NESCAC in rebounding at 8.5 per game and senior guard Alison Hadden (Drexel Hill, Pa.) is tied for sixth in assists with 4.3 per game.
McCloskey was named to the NESCAC honor roll and as the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Co-Player of the Week for her outstanding efforts against Clark and Smith.
Men’s Basketball (6-1) Has Fast Start
The Trinity College men’s basketball team won at Elms, 72-44, on Dec. 4 and defeated Ursinus, 79-60, on Dec. 8 to close out the fall semester on a six-game winning streak.
Senior tri-captain swingman Colin Tabb (Somers, Conn.) had 21 points and nine rebounds at Elms, while freshman center Jim Bebry (Farmingdale, N.Y.) added a career-high 12 points off the bench making all six of his field goal attempts.
Against Ursinus, Tabb tallied game-highs of 24 points and nine boards, sinking five three-pointers in eight attempts. Junior forward Ryan Uszenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) had 15 points and freshman guard John Halas (White Plains, N.Y.) nailed four three out of eight three-point attempts for 14 points off the bench.
Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, currently has the third-best overall record in the NESCAC at 6-1. Tabb is second in the league in scoring with 23.9 ppg, third in free throw shooting with a 81.1 percentage (30-37), fourth in rebounding with 8.4 per contest, and sixth in steals with 2.1 per game. Dion is second in the NESCAC in rebounding with 9.9 per game, fourth in blocked shots with 1.1 per game, and 10th in scoring at 16.7 ppg, while Days is second in the NESCAC with 2.3 blocked shots per contest. As a team, the Bantams are third in the conference with a 47.6 field goal shooting percentage (208-431).
Women’s Ice Hockey (2-6, 2-6) Downs Amherst
The Trinity College women’s ice hockey team defeated NESCAC rival Amherst, 3-2, in overtime on Dec. 7 but lost, 6-0, against league foe Hamilton on Dec. 8 to close the fall semester.
Freshman forward Libby Jakes (Roseville, Minn.) netted the game-winning score in overtime to lift the Bantams against Amherst, receiving assists from classmates Victoria Fox (Locust Valley, N.Y.) and Michelle O’Neil (Westwood, Mass.). Bantam freshman Kristy Hadeka (Castleton, Vt.) forced the extra frame with her game-tying goal in the third period and assisted sophomore forward Samantha Lee (Hartsdale, N.Y.) on Trinity’s first score. Bantam sophomore goalie Mimi MacKinnon (Glen Cove, N.Y.) made 29 saves in the victory and added 35 stops the next night against Hamilton.
Trinity, coached by Katie Busniuk, is currently in seventh place in the nine-team NESCAC with a 2-6 league record.
Men’s Ice Hockey (5-4, 3-2) Slides Before Downing Hamilton
The Trinity College men’s ice hockey team lost its final game before Christmas, 2-1, at NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Dec. 6. The Bantams returned from a 22-day layoff for final exams and Christmas break with a 4-1 loss against Oswego State in the first round of the Pepsi Cardinal Classic at Plattsburgh State. Trinity rebounded the next day, outscoring NESCAC rival Hamilton, 8-4, in the consolation game.
After senior co-captain forward Matt Greason (North Bridgton, Maine) scored the Bantam goal and senior goalie Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) made 22 saves against Wesleyan, sophomore forward Steven LaBrie (Springfield, Mass.) netted the only Bantam goal and Faulkner again tallied 22 saves against Oswego State which was ranked No. 10 in the nation entering the game.
Against Hamilton, freshman forward Ryan Stevens (Concord, N.H.) helped the Bantams end its scoring slump with a hat trick, while LaBrie did his part with a goal and three assists. Trinity senior defenseman Martins Lans (Carnikava, Latvia) also notched three assists, while freshman forward Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) had two goals and an assist, sophomore forward Dan Gyllstrom (Hudson, Mass.) added a goal and two assists, senior forward Mark Colwell (Canton, Mass.) scored a goal and an assist, and freshman forward Joseph Ori (Niles, Ill) dished out two assists. Bantam freshman goaltender Doug Kisielius (Park Ridge, Ill.) stopped a career-high 35 shots to earn his first collegiate win.
Trinity, coached by John Dunham, is currently tied with Wesleyan for seventh place in the NESCAC with a 3-2 league record. Greason is fourth in the league in scoring with five goals and 11 assists for 16 points, while junior forward Greg O’Leary (Reading, Mass.) is tied for seventh in the NESCAC in scoring with three goals and 10 assists for 13 points. Faulkner is second in the league with a 1.83 GAA in net.
Women’s Swimming and Diving (M0-3, W1-3) Masters Mount Holyoke
The Trinity College women’s swimming and diving team picked up its first victory of the season, 126-115, at Mount Holyoke on Dec. 4. The Bantam men’s squad dropped a 158-103 decision at Connecticut College, and the Trinity women fell, 169-114, at Connecticut College, to close out the fall semester on Dec. 8.
Against Mount Holyoke, the Bantam 200-meter freestyle relay squad won the day’s final event to give Trinity its first triumph of the season. Senior co-captain Katie Lafleur (Belchertown, Mass.) and the sophomore trio of Julia Kaye (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), Caroline Molitor (Berwyn, Pa.), and Elizabeth Stoker (Westwood, Mass.) finished in 1:58.98. Kaye also finished first in the 200-meter freestyle at 2:11.60 and the 400-meter freestyle at 5:01.93.The 200-meter freestyle relay team won again at Connecticut College, and Kaye took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:13.57) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:37.50). In the men’s meet at Connecticut College, senior captain Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, Conn.) won the 100- and the 200-yard butterfly events at 58.69 and 2:09.89, respectively, while junior Chris Rorer (Villanova, Pa.) took first in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes with times of 1:04.53 and 2:24.96, respectively. Bantam freshman Matt DeRosa (Setauket, N.Y.) enjoyed his best performance as a collegian with first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.43) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.45).
Stoker has posted the Bantam women’s top time in four different events this season, while sophomore Jennifer Bartlett (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Katherine Mortenson (Bedford, Mass.) have each posted the team’s top time in three events.
Stoker finished the 50-yard freestyle in 26.83, the 100-yard freestyle in 58.33, the 50-yard butterfly in 30.11, and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:06.03. Bartlett posted a time of 35.78 in the 50-yard breaststroke, a 1:17.20 in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 2:46.53 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Mortensen had times of 30.08 in the 50-yard backstroke, 1:05.18 in the 100-yard backstroke, and 2:27.13 in the 200-yard backstroke. In diving, sophomore Meghan Emilio (Haverhill, Mass.) achieved team-best scores of 153.50 in the one-meter event and 139.05 in the three-meter event.
For the men’s team, Sterling and Rorer have each posted the team-best time in four events. Sterling swam a 10:42.27 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, a 58.69 in the 100-yard butterfly, a 2:07.97 in the 200-yard butterfly, and a 4:46.02 in the 400-yard individual medley. Rorer finished the 50-yard breaststroke in 30.03, the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:04.53, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:23.59, and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:12.66.
