Bak Named League’s Most Outstanding Male Performer for Cross Country

The Trinity College men’s and women’s cross country teams finished third and fifth, respectively, at the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Meet on Oct. 27.

Junior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) won the men’s race with a career-best time of 24:54. Not far behind Bak was classmate and fellow tri-captain Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.), who finished third also with a career-best time of 25:11. Sophomore Jon Drappi (West Boylston Mass.) and freshman James Sullivan (Sterling, Mass.) finished 21st and 23rd, respectively, for Trinity at 26:06 and 26:10. Rounding out the Bantam top five was junior Steve Coakley (South Windsor, Conn.) who finished seventh in 26:32.

In the women’s race, junior Leanne Rheaume (Pittsfield, Mass.) and freshman Kristina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) paced the Bantams, finishing 15th and 16th, respectively, with times of 18:43 and 18:44. Sophomore Kristina DePeau (Stafford, Conn.) also ran a solid race, finishing 23rd at 19:02.

Bak was named as the 2001 NESCAC Men’s Cross Country Most Outstanding Performer, to the All-NESCAC First Team, and as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Men’s Cross Country Co-Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance in the NESCAC Championships. Emord joined Bak as a First Team All-NESCAC selection.

The Trinity men are currently ranked No. 5 in New England and No. 16 in the nation, and the Bantam women are ranked No. 5 in New England and No. 24 in the nation. This week’s New England polls:

Volleyball (13-15, 5-5) Beats Western Connecticut

The Trinity College volleyball team defeated Western Connecticut, 3-2, on Oct. 23 in the final home game of the 2001 season.

Against Western Connecticut, freshman outside hitter Katherine Hunter (Ross, Calif.) totaled 23 kills, 15 digs and six aces as the Bantams rallied back from a 2-0 deficit with Western Connecticut actually serving for the match in the third game. Senior outside hitter Kristin Hagan (Kentfield, Calif.) added 15 digs and 12 kills, and had 36 kill attempts to set a new College record of 2,416. Junior setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) finished with 63 assists and freshman opposite hitter Charlotte Grassi (Chevy Chase, Md.) added 14 kills off the bench for the Bantams.

Trinity, coached by Angela Mills, finished the NESCAC regular season in seventh place in the NESCAC with a 5-5 league record. They have qualified for the eight-team NESCAC Championship Tournament on Nov. 2 and 3 at Middlebury. As the No. 7 seed, Trinity will play No. 2-seeded Williams, ranked No. 2 in New England, on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. Should the Bantams win against Williams, they will play the winner of No. 3-seeded Amherst, ranked No. 4 in New England, and No. 6-seeded Colby, whom they defeated twice during the regular season, on Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. Top-seeded Wesleyan, ranked No. 3 in New England plays No. 8-seeded Middlebury and No. 4-seeded Tufts, ranked No. 6 in New England, plays No. 5-seeded Bates in the other quarterfinal matches.

Horton leads the NESCAC in assists with 1,093 (12.42 per game), while senior outside hitter Hagan is seventh in digs with 334 (3.41 per game). Hunter is seventh and Hagan is ninth in the NESCAC in kills with 396 (3.84 per game) and 358 (3.65 per game), respectively, while senior co-captain middle blocker Beth Landry (Troy, Mich.) is ninth in blocks with 85 (0.84 per game) and sophomore middle blocker Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) is 10th in blocks with 80 (0.82 per game).

Men’s Soccer (6-8, 3-6) Limps Home

The Trinity College men’s soccer team finished the 2001 campaign with a 2-1 loss at Clark on Oct. 24 and a 1-0 loss to NESCAC rival Amherst on Oct. 27. The loss to Amherst prevented the Bantams, which finished the season with five consecutive losses in which they scored one goal, from qualifying for the NESCAC Championship Tournament.

Sophomore Bret Boudreau (Orinda, Calif.) scored his first career goal against Clark on assists from sophomores Tim Cross (Marblehead, Mass.) and Jon Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.). Against Amherst, sophomore Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) made five saves in a spirited effort for the injury-plagued Bantams. Trinity played without junior co-captains Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) and Peter Zoppi (Cheshire, Conn.) for the final four games and without starting sophomore midfielder Aaron Birnbaum (Newton, Mass.) against Amherst.

Trinity, coached by Ed Mighten, finished the regular season in eighth place in the NESCAC with a 3-6 league record. Sandell is sixth in the league in scoring with 19 points on seven goals and five assists despite missing the final four games with a knee injury.

Behind Sandell among the Trinity scoring leaders, Birnbaum finished with four goals and two assists for 10 points and Klaus had two goals and three assists for seven points. Freshman forward John Ziadie (Kingston, Jamiaca) added three scores and Zoppi notched a goal and four assists in 10 games. Klaus started all 14 games this fall, while Birnbaum started all 13 prior to the Amherst game. Ziadie started 10 of the 11 games in which he played.

On defense, sophomore Jonathan Gamble (Rotterham, England) started all 14 games, recording two goals, including the first of his career, and an assist. Cross started all 12 games in the backfield and the midfield with one assist, while junior Kevin Alexander (Wellesley, Mass.) started 11 games, junior Aaron Brill (Merion, Pa.) started 10, and freshman Craig Schneider (Manchester, Conn.) started nine, respectively, on defense. Freshman midfielder Ramon Bell (Kingston, Jamaica) also started 10 games, assisting on two goals, and classmate Rob Bialobrzeski (Hampton, N.H.) made seven starts at forward with a goal and two assists.

In goal, Doherty and freshman Jamie Burns (Minnetonka, Minn.) each enjoyed solid seasons. Doherty finished with 756 minutes, 58 saves, 14 goals allowed, 1.67 GAA and one shutout. Burns had 532 minutes, 27 saves, 12 goals allowed, and a 2.03 GAA.

Other Bantams who made significant contributions to the team this fall include junior back Jon Cohen (Portland, Maine), junior midfielder Nick Lombardi (New Boston, N.H.), versatile sophomore Jared Rubin (Wellesley, Mass.), and Boudreau. Rubin and Boudreau each their first career goals.

Golf Finishes Fall at NEIGA Championships in Cape Cod

The Trinity College olf team finished 22nd of 42 teams in the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships on Oct. 21-23 at Port/Starboard Captains Course on Cape Cod. The Bantam were eighth among Division III teams.

Sophomore Peter Munsill (Peace Dale, R.I.) tied his career-best performance with a two-round score of 160 (82 +78) to finish 63rd. Bantam sophomore BrianDiMenna (Darien, Conn.) shot a 162 and junior Jon Martis (Pepper Pike, Ohio) shot a 166 to finish 81st and 100th, respectively.
