Women’s Soccer (6-6, 2-5) Still Alive For Post-SeasonThe Trinity College women’s soccer team blanked Manhattanville, 4-0, on the road on Oct. 10 but lost at New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Tufts, 2-1, on Oct. 13. Against Manhattanville, sophomore forward Lindsay Aquilina (Buffalo, N.Y.) and senior midfielder Kerry Hood (Londonderry, N.H.) each scored two goals, while freshman goalie Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.) made seven saves to earn a shutout.

Freshman goalkeeper Katherine Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.), pressed into service despite a shoulder injury due to injuries and class commitments by the other goalies, made four saves in her first career start. |
Trinity, coached by Michael Smith, is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC with an 2-5 league record. Doyle is tied for fourth in the league in scoring with 17 points on eight goals and one assist, while Shields is tied for fifth in the league with a 1.00 GAA.
The Bantams can earn a bid to the NESCAC Championship Tournament with wins against Wesleyan on Oct. 16 and Middlebury on Oct. 20 in the regular season finale, or with a win in one of the games and losses by some other teams. Middlebury is ranked No. 7 in New England. The three NESCAC Championship Tournament first round games will take place at Bates on Oct. 21. Should they make the tournament, the Bantams will be the No. 7 seed in the field and will play the No. 2 seed on Bates’ Russell Street Field at 11 a.m.
Men’s Soccer (6-4, 3-3) Enters Regional Rankings
The Trinity College men’s soccer team posted a 3-1 victory against Eastern Connecticut on Oct. 10, but succumbed to Tufts on the road, 1-0, on Oct. 13. The Bantams have won four out of their last six games.
Junior co-captain forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset,
Mass.) paced the Bantams with two goals and an assist against Eastern
Connecticut, while freshman Jamie Burns (Minnetonka, Minn.) was forced to
make just two saves. Trinity has used a number of different combinations in the
backfield, but the two mainstays have been junior Jonathan Gamble (Rotterham,
England) and sophomore Tim Cross (Marblehead, Mass.). Both have
started every game on defense.
Against Tufts, sophomore goalkeeper Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass)
finished with 12 saves. Tufts was ranked No. 5 in New England entering the game.
Trinity, coached by Eddie Mighten, is currently in sixth place in the NESCAC with a 3-3 league record. Sandell, who is fifth in the NESCAC in scoring with 19 points on seven goals and five assists, was named to the NESCAC honor roll for his two goals and assist against Eastern Connecticut.
The Bantams are ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III New England poll. Trinity visits No. 8 Wesleyan on Oct. 10. This week’s poll:

Volleyball (11-12, 5-5) Finishes League Season Even
The Trinity College volleyball team rounded out the NESCAC regular season with a 3-1 loss to Amherst and a 3-0 win over Connecticut College on Oct. 12 and 3-0 losses against Wesleyan and Tufts on Oct. 13. All four matches were part of the final NESCAC quad match of the season and took place at Tufts.
Freshman outside hitter Katherine Hunter (Ross, Calif.) totaled 58 kills and 37 digs in four matches. Seniors Beth Landry (Troy, Mich.) and Kristin Hagan (Kentfield, Calif.) also finished with strong numbers. Landry had 35 kills, 18 digs, and 8 blocks, while Hagan finished with 38 kills, 23 digs, and 6 blocks. The three Trinity defeats were hard-fought efforts against some of the regions’s top teams. Wesleyan is ranked No. 3, Amherst is ranked No. 5 and Tufts is No. 6 in New England.
Trinity, coached by Angela Mills, finishes the regular campaign in seventh place in the NESCAC with a 5-5 league record. They have qualified for the eight-team NESCAC Championship Tournament in November. Junior setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) leads the NESCAC in assists with 868 (12.96 per game), while sophomore middle blocker Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Landry are tied for seventh in blocks with 66 (0.81 per game) and 62 (0.81 per game), respectively. Hagan is fifth in the league in digs with 303 (3.74 per game) and eighth in kills with 310 (3.83 per game), and Hunter is ninth in kills with 294 (3.63 per game).
Trinity will have another shot at No. 3 Wesleyan on Oct. 20 in the first match of the Coast Guard Classic Tournament.
Field Hockey (6-6, 3-4) Wins at Tufts
The Trinity College field hockey team won at NESCAC rival Tufts, 1-0, on Oct. 13. The Bantam goal was scored by freshman forward Beatrice Gratry (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) from senior co-captain midfielder Mary Jacobs (Malvern, Pa.) late in the second half. Gratry has scored or assisted on 11 of Trinity’s last 12 goals and scored the game winning in Trinity’s last four victories.
Bantam senior goalkeeper Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, Fla.) made 11 saves to earn the shutout victory. On defense, juniors Susan Hoppock (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Jennifer Rieg (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and sophomore Meriden Daly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) have provided Martin with a stable unit in front of her. The trio has started all 13 games this season.
Trinity, coached by Anne Parmenter, is currently tied with Connecticut College and Wesleyan for sixth place in the NESCAC with a 3-4 record in the league. Gratry is tied for fourth in the NESCAC in scoring with nine goals and three assists for 21 points.

Women’s Tennis (4-3) Splits Final Two Fall Duals
The Trinity College women’s tennis team blanked Connecticut College, 9-0, on the road on Oct. 8 before falling at Tufts, 8-1, to close out the fall dual season.
Trinity dominated against Connecticut College, allowing just 18 games to be scored against the in six singles matches and three doubles matches. Junior co-captain Courtney Sargeant won her No. 4 singles match, 6-0, 6-0, and teamed with senior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.) to take the No. 1 doubles match, 8-3. Junior Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass) and sophomore Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) won the No. 3 doubles match, 8-0, and both were triumphant in their singles matches in straight sets. Huebner and Goldman also won the only Trinity points against Tufts with another 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
Freshman Brittany Olwine (Atlanta, Ga.) leads Trinity in dual singles winning percentage with three wins in four matches. Mate and Huebner are both 5-2, while Goldman and Sargeant are each 4-3. Olwine played No. 6, Mate played mostly at No. 2, Huebner played mostly at No. 5, Goldman played at No. 1, and Sargeant played predominantly at No. 4. In doubles, Goldman and Huebner combined for a 5-2 dual record this fall, playing at No. 3.
Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett will compete in the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tournament on Oct. 19-20 to finish the 2001 fall campaign.
Cross Country Finishes First and Third at Early Invitational
The Trinity College women’s cross-country team captured its first James Early Invitational title and the men’s team finished third at Westfield State College on Oct. 13. A day earlier, two members of the men’s team was also represented at the New England Open Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Junior co-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) and James Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) finished 11th overall with a time of 25:03 and Emord placed 53rd at 25:59.
Trinity freshman Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass) and James Sullivan (Sterling, Mass.) each finished third in the women’s race and fourth in the men’s race respectively in the James Early Invitational. Junior Leann Rheaume finished fifth at 18:59 and sophomore Kristina DePeau (Stafford, Conn.) was sixth three seconds later for the Bantam women.
In the men’s race, Trinity junior harrier Steven Coakley (South Windsor, Conn.) placed sixth with a time of 27:02, and classmate Ryan Lerner (Manchester, Conn.) was 10th at 27:30. The string performance at the Early Invitational bodes well for the future, as the course will also be the site of the NCAA Division III Regional Championships in November.
The Bantams are currently ranked as the No. 6 men’s team in New England and the No. 20 men’s team in the nation, and the No. 4 women’s team in New England and the No. 24 women’s team (tied with St. Olaf) in the nation. Trinity will compete against teams from all division in the New England Open Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Fri., Oct. 12. This week’s New England polls
