Women’s Soccer (5-5, 2-4) Beats Colby and Smith

The Trinity College women’s soccer team enjoyed a successful week at home with a 2-1 win over Smith on Oct. 4 and a 3-1 win over New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Colby on Oct. 6. The Bantams suffered their only loss, 2-0, to visiting league foe Bowdoin on Oct. 7.

Against Smith, sophomore forward Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with 23:12 remaining in the game, after freshman midfielder Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) tied the score on her first career goal. Senior tri-captain goalkeeper Sarah Bradley (Mansfield, Conn.) was forced to only make two saves in the first 70 minutes before yielding to freshman Brenna Sheilds (Cutchogue, N.Y.).

Doyle continued to shine for the Bantams versus Colby, scoring two goals including the game-winner with 18:20 remaining. Senior midfielder Kerry Hood (Londonderry, N.H.) scored the other Trinity goal and sophomore forward Lindsay Aquilina (Buffalo, N.Y.) collected an assist. Shields finished with seven saves in goal, and added ten saves the next day in a losing effort against Bowdoin.

Trinity, coached by Michael Smith, is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC with an 2-4 league record. Doyle, who is third in the league in scoring with 17 points on eight goals and one assist, was named to the NESCAC honor roll for scoring game-winning goals against Smith and Colby and totaling three goals for the week.

Men’s Soccer (5-3, 3-2) Continues Winning Ways

The Trinity College men’s soccer team posted a 4-1 victory at Johnson & Wales on Oct. 3, and a crucial 2-1 win against visiting Colby on Oct. 6 in NESCAC action. The Bantams have won five of their last six games.

Sophomore midfielder Aaron Birnbaum (Newton, Mass.) scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Bantams over Johnson & Wales. Junior co-captain forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) contributed one goal and one assist, while freshman goalkeeper Jamie Burns (Minnetonka, Minn.) had five saves.

Against Colby, sophomore midfielder John Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal with 3:55 left in the game on a well-placed pass from Sandell. Sophomore back Jonathan Gamble (Rodderham, England) opened the scoring in the 66th minute, converting a corner kick from Klaus. Sophomore Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) finished with six saves in goal.

Trinity, coached by Eddie Mighten, is currently tied with Tufts for fourth place in the NESCAC with a 3-2 league record. Sandell is sixth in the NESCAC in scoring with 12 points on five goals and two assists, and Birnbaum is seventh with nine points on four goals and one assist.

The Bantam will visit Tufts, ranked No. 5 in New England, on Sat., Oct. 13.

Volleyball (10-9, 4-2) Wins Two League Matches

The Trinity College volleyball team lost, 3-0, to Amherst in a non-conference match, but rebounded to defeat NESCAC rivals Middlebury, 3-2 on Oct. 5 and Hamilton, 3-1 on Oct. 6, in the fall’s second NESCAC quad match held at Wesleyan. The Bantams dropped their second match on Oct.6, 3-1, against Williams.

Senior outside hitter Kristin Hagan (Kentfield, Calif.) totaled eight kills and 10 digs against Amherst, while sophomore middle blocker Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had eight kills.

At three matches at the NESCAC quad, Trinity junior setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) totaled 139 assists and 23 digs, and freshman outside hitter Katherine Hunter (Ross, Calif.) notched 53 kills and 49 digs. Hagan added 44 kills and 36 digs, while senior co-captain middle blocker Beth Landry (Troy, Mich.) had 24 kills, 31 digs, and nine blocks.

Trinity is currently tied with Williams for fourth place in the NESCAC with a 4-2 league record. Horton is second in the NESCAC in assists with 739 (10.87 per game), while Hagan is third in the league in digs with 280 (4.12 per game) and sixth in kills with 272 (4.00 per game). Walker and Landry are sixh and ninth in blocks with 58 (0.91 per game) and 58 (0.86 per game), respectively. Trinity will play Wesleyan, ranked No. 3 in New England, No. 5 Amherst, and No. 6 Tufts this weekend at the third and final NESCAC quad match at Tufts.

Field Hockey (5-6, 2-4) Goes 1-2 in Three NESCAC Home Games

The Trinity College field hockey team fell to visiting NESCAC rival Amherst, 3-1, on Oct. 3, but came back on Oct. 6 defeat visiting league foe Colby, 3-2. The Bantams lost a 2-1, overtime decision the next day against Bowdoin.

Freshman forward Beatrice Gratry (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) scored the lone goal for the Bantams in their loss to Amherst. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, Fl.) tallied five saves in the losing effort.

Against Colby, Gratry stepped up once again, notching two goals and an assist, giving the rookie a goal or an assist in Trinity’s last 10 scores. Senior co-captain midfielder Mary Jacobs (Malvern, Pa.) contributed a goal and an assist in the victory, while Martin finished with seven stops in goal. Martin made 26 saves and sophomore forward Jennifer Latiff (Rosemont, Pa.) scored her first goal of the season against Bowdoin.

Trinity is currently in seventh place in the NESCAC with a 2-4 record in the league. Gratry is fourth in the NESCAC in scoring with eight goals and three assists for 19 points.

Women’s Tennis (3-2) Beats Hartford

The Trinity College women’s tennis team downed Hartford, 8-1, on Oct. 4. Junior Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.) was perfect in a 6-0, 6-0, win at No. 4 singles and teamed with sophomore Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) to win, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles.

Senior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.), the team’s only senior, has the best singles record after one month at 5-1, while Goldman is 7-3 and Huebner is 5-2. Goldman and Huebner have combined for a 6-3 record in doubles.

Cross Country Captures Bantam Invitational Crowns

The Trinity College men’s and women’s cross-country teams competed in and won the ninth annual Bantam Invitational Cross-Country Meet on Oct. 6. at beautiful Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn.

Junior co-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) finished in first place in the men’s race, while freshman Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) finished in third place in the women’s meet. Bak finished with a time of 25:50, followed by classmate Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) for second place at 26:32. For the women, Kane finished in 19:37, followed closely behind by juniors Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, Mass.), and Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.), and sophomore Kristina DePeau (Stafford, Conn.), finishing fourth through sixth, respectively, at 19:45, 19:47, and 19:50.

The Bantams are currently ranked as the No. 6 men’s team in New England and the No. 20 men’s team in the nation as well as the No. 5 women’s team in New England and the No. 26 women’s team in the nation. Trinity will compete against teams from all division in the New England Open Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Fri., Oct. 12. This week’s New England polls
