Baseball (25-10, 9-3) Stumbles at Williams
The Trinity College baseball team lost, 9-3, at Williams on May 11 and, 4-1, against Amherst at Williams on May 12 in the first two rounds of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Tournament.
Against Williams, sophomores Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) and Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) provided RBI singles in the top of the fourth inning, but the Ephs outscored the Bantams, 9-1, the rest of the way to send Trinity to the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tourney.
The next day, Bantam sophomore right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) tossed a five-hitter with 13 strikeouts and two earned runs allowed in a losing effort. Trinity junior Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with the lone Bantam RBI.
Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, finished the regular season second place in the NESCAC East Division with a 9-3 record in the league. Senior co-captain Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) is fourth in the NESCAC in earned run average at 1.90, to go along with his 6-4 record. Junior shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) is seventh in the league in hitting with a .403 batting average.
Women's Lacrosse (8-8, 3-6) Falls at Wheaton in ECAC Quarters
The Trinity College women's lacrosse team lost, 11-8, at Wheaton (Mass.) in the quarterfinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship Tournament on May 9.
Against Wheaton, Trinity junior midfielder Anna Sullivan (Boston, Mass.) scored four goals and assisted on a fifth in a losing cause. Sophomore middie Katelyn Bowman (Summit, N.J.) added three goals, all in the final eight minutes, and junior tri-captain attack Ashley Taylor (Washington, D.C.) notched a goal and two assists for the Bantams. Trinity was seeded No. 5 and Wheaton was No. 4 in the eight-team tourney field.
Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, finished the regular season in a four-way tie for fifth place in the 10-team NESCAC with a 3-6 league mark. Sullivan and Taylor are tied for fifth in the NESCAC in scoring, while Taylor's assist total places her 12th in the nation. Sullivan has 43 goals and 14 assists for 57 points and Taylor has 24 goals and 33 assists. Miller is tied for eighth in the league in scoring with 39 goals and eight assists for a total of 47 points.
Men's Lacrosse (6-8, 4-5) Loses to Conn in League Tourney
The Trinity College men's lacrosse team lost, 11-8, at Connecticut College in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Championship Tournament on May 1.
Against Connecticut College, which was ranked No. 6 in New England and No. 25 in the nation at the time, Trinity junior Sean Rohan (South Hadley, Mass.) led six different Bantam goal-scorers with two, while Bantam attackman Ravi Pillay (Potomac, Md.) added two assists. Trinity was seeded No. 5 and Connecticut College was seeded No. 4 in the seven-team NESCAC field.
Trinity, coached by Mike Darr, finished the 2001 NESCAC campaign in fifth place with a 4-5 league mark.
Men's Tennis (14-5) Wins NCAA Match
The Trinity College men's tennis team defeated Bates, 5-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on May 12 at MIT, but dropped a 5-2 decision at MIT in the second round on May 13.
Against Bates, senior co-captain Rostyslav Orach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won in straight sets at No. 1 singles and teamed with freshman Richard Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario) for an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Lawrence also posted a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while freshmen Csaba Godry (Budapest, Hungary) and Scott Levy (Waban, Mass.) won straight-set matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Trinity senior co-captain George Kaneb (Cornwall, Ontario) and junior Peter Green (New York, N.Y.) added an 8-0 drubbing at No. 3 doubles for the Bantams.
Orach and Lawrence each won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, against MIT but were upset at No. 1 doubles for just the second time this season. Godry battled hard but came up short at No. 3 singles by a score of 1-6, 7-6, 6-0. MIT was seeded No. 1 in the NCAA sub-regional, while Trinity was seeded No. 2 and Bates was No. 3.
Orach leads the Bantams with a perfect 18-0 dual singles record and a 28-1 overall mark this season. Orach/Lawrence is 15-2 in dual doubles matches and 24-3 overall, while Lawrence is 16-1 in dual singles matches and 22-3 overall. Levy and sophomore Muammar Khan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) finished the season 10-5 in duals and 15-7 overall as a doubles tandem.
Women's Tennis (14-5) Wins NCAA Match
The Trinity College women's tennis team lost at Williams, 8-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on May 12.
Against Williams, junior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.) posted the only Trinity victory, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 singles. The Bantams, seeded No. 4 in the four-team sub-regional at Williams, were making their second straight NCAA appearance.
Track Teams Compete in Championship Meets
The Trinity College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams each competed in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships on May 5 and the New England Open Championships on May 12.
The Bantam women finished 12th at the Division III New England Championships at Middlebury. Senior co-captain Marisa Eddy (Los Angeles, Calif.) placed second in the 800-meter dash with a College-record time of 2:14.27. The time qualifies her provisionally for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Fellow senior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, Conn.), who has already qualified for Nationals in the heptathlon, came in second place in the 200-meter dash at 26.11 and the 100-meter hurdles at 15.12. Junior Beth Landry (Troy, Mich.) finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.66 meters. All three earned All-New England honors for their performances.
The Bantam men finished 16th at the Division III New England Championships at Connecticut College. Sophomore Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) placed second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:55.86. Freshmen Francis Vincent (East Lyme, Conn) and Chris Madison (Chatham, N.Y.) finished fifth and sixth in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, respectively. Vincent posted a time of 22.33 after running the preliminary heat in a career-high time of 22.32, while Madison finished with a time of 56.95. All three earned All-New England honors for their performances.
The Bantam 4x400-meter relay team finished eighth with a time of 3:31.86. The all-freshman foursome, consisting of Vincent, Madison, Jon Drappi (West Boylston, Mass.), and James Porter (New Haven, Conn.), were named as All-New England athletes as well.
The Bantam women finished 32nd at the New England Open Championships at Williams College. Eddy placed eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.51, earning All-New England honors among Division I, II, and III, schools. Sophomore Ryan Lerner (Manchester, Conn.) had the top men's performance at the New England Open Championships at the University of Connecticut, finishing 12th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:32.22.
Rowing Finishes as Third Best Overall Small College Program
The Trinity College men's and women's rowing teams enjoyed outstanding performances at both the New England Championship on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. on May 5 and the Avaya Communications Collegiate Championships on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga. on May 13.
The men won its second consecutive New England Championship title with a season-best time of 5:53.51 in the grand final, and finished third at the Collegiate Championships in 6:12.4. The women finished first in the petite final (seventh overall) at the New England Championships with a season-best time of 6:35 and sixth at the Collegiate Championships in 7:17.2.
The men's varsity eight, coached by Steve Fluhr, consisted of senior co-captains Barrett Bijur (New Canaan, Conn.) and George Hutton (Annandale, Va.), seniors Fernando Borghese (Haverford, Pa.), Doug Carlson (Glenview, Ill.), John Mansfield (New York, N.Y.), and Rafe Quinn (Winter Park, Fla.), sophomore Joe Getzendanner (Summit, N.J.), and sophomore coxswain Joe Giallanella (North Andover, Mass.).
The women's varsity eight, coached by Erica Schwab, consisted of senior co-captain Mara Keith (Barrington, N.H.), senior Susanna Kise (Philadelphia, Pa.), juniors Sarah Melnitsky (Dedham, Mass.) and Molly Roach (Salt Lake City, Utah), sophomores Amanda Gifford (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.), Katie Fredlund (Seattle, Wash.), Kate Miller (Devon, Pa.), and Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.), and senior co-captain coxswain Emily Queen (Baltimore, Md.).
The women's varsity eight finished as the No. 10-ranked team in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches (CRC) Division II/III national poll. The men ended up ranked No. 22 in the CRC national poll. In the Overall Points Trophy standings, the men's and women's varsity eight crews finished third, resulting in a third-place finish in the combined Overall Points Trophy as well.
