Baseball (25-8, 9-3) Ties Win Record

The Trinity College baseball team lost, 11-4, at Springfield on April 23 and, 5-4, at Amherst on April 25, but rallied to sweep Brandeis, 8/5-6/2, on April 28. The Bantams finished the 2001 regular season with a doubleheader split against Hamilton, 1/13-5/9, on April 29.

Against Springfield, junior shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) had four hits in four at-bats and two RBI, while classmates Alan Andreini (Greenwich, Conn.) had a single and a double and Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) had a pair of hits.

Spanos and sophomore Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) had two hits apiece at Amherst, and senior co-captain Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) pitched well in a losing cause, allowing eight hits and two earned runs over seven innings

In the sweep of Brandeis, junior first baseman Nick Callini (Westfield, Mass.) smacked his first home run of the year,a three-run shot, and added a solo homer in the second game. Callini had two hits and two runs in the nightcap. Sophomore right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) and senior co-captain righty Jack Richardson (Arlington, Va.) each tossed seven-inning, six-hit complete games. Bayliss yielded six unearned runs with eight strikeouts in the first game.

Jarrett Bayliss took a tough loss for the second time in a week in the first game againbst Hamilton, allowing six hits and striking out nine in a complete-game loss. Spanos led the Trinity offense in the second game with four hits, two doubles, and three runs, while sophomore Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) added two hits, three RBI, and his fifth homer of the season. Freshman right-hander Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) pitched seven innings in relief, after Hamilton scored six runs in the top of the first frame, allowing one unearned run and six hits and striking out six to earn the win. Freimuth added a single, a double, two runs, and two RBI, and freshman catcher Tony O'Shaughnessy (Manchester, N.H.) had three hits for the Bantams.

Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, is in second place in the NESCAC East Division with a 9-3 record in the league. The Bantams have completed their league schedule and have clinched a bid to the inaugural NESCAC Championship Tournament next weekend at Williams.

Jarrett Bayliss is third in the NESCAC in earned run average at 1.90, to go along with his 6-3 record. Freimuth is seventh in the league in hitting with a .403 batting average (52-129) and Spanos is 10th at .391 (52-133).

Trinity is currently ranked No. 7 in the New England Baseball Coaches Division III poll. This week's New England Poll:

McDermott Earns NESCAC Player of the Week for Softball (7-22, 1-11)

The Trinity College softball team defeated St. Joseph (Conn.), 5-0, on April 24 and lost, 1-0, to Williams on April 25, before splitting a doubleheader at NESCAC rival Bates, 4/3-0/4, on April 28 in the final games of the 2001 regular season.

Against St. Joseph, sophomore Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) pitched a three-hit shutout, while senior co-captain shortstop Tricia Mase (North Branford, Conn.) and junior second baseman Liz Bontempo (Granby, Mass.) each had two hits. McDermott took the loss, despite allowing three hits and one unearned run in seven innings against Williams two days later.

McDermott totaled 10 innings of shutout ball at Bates, hurling a four-hit-shutout in the first game and three innings of scoreless relief in the second. Sophomore outfielder Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) hit her second home run of the season in the first game and Bontempo smacked two hits in the nightcap.

Trinity, coached by Tammi Hyde, finished the season in fifth place in the NESCAC East Division at 1-7. McDermott was named the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week for her outstnading performances. She pitched and allowed 11 hits and one unearned run with 23 strikeouts over a 24-inning span in five days.

Women's Lacrosse (8-7, 3-6) Narrowly Misses NESCAC Tourney

The Trinity College women's lacrosse team defeated Bowdoin, 10-6, on April 28 in the final game of the 2001 regular season.

Against Wesleyan, junior goalkeeper Kelly Jo Burnett (Pennington, N.J.) made 18 saves, including 11 stops and one goal allowed in the second half. Junior midfielder Anna Sullivan (Boston, Mass.) had three goals and an assist, while sophomore middie Elizabeth Miller (Weston, Mass.) scored three times and junior tri-captain attack Ashley Taylor (Washington, D.C.) notched a goal and three assists.

Miller scored three goals at Middlebury, while Sullivan scored the Bantams' other two and Taylor dished out a pair of assists. Middlebury was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time of the game.

Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, finished the regular season in a four-way tie for fifth place in the 10-team NESCAC with a 3-6 league mark. The Bantams fell short in the tiebreaker with a 1-2 record against the three other 3-6 team, and missed the NESCAC Championship Tournament. Trinity could still qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship Tournament next week.

Sullivan and Taylor are tied for the NESCAC lead in scoring, while Taylor's assist total places her tied for 13th in the nation. Sullivan has 43 goals and 14 assists for 57 points and Taylor has 24 goals and 33 assists. Miller is sixth in the league in scoring with 39 goals and eight assists for a total of 47 points.

Men's Lacrosse (6-7, 4-5) Splits Last Two

The Trinity College men's lacrosse team edged NESCAC rival Bates, 14-13, in overtime on April 25 at Harvard, but dropped a 15-4 decision at league foe Bowdoin on April 28 in the final game of the 2001 regular season.

Against Bates, which was ranked No. 10 at the time, freshman attackman David Huoppi (Pomfret, Conn.) scored the go-ahead goal in the fourth quarter and the game-winning goal as time expired in overtime. Senior tri-captain midfielder Mark Tassie (Hopewell, N.J.) recorded a season-high six goals with two assists, and senior attackman Rob Morse (Winchester, Mass.) notched a goal and three assists for the Bantams. Freshman goalie Geoff Shaw (Charlotte, N.C.) came off the bench to make 13 saves in 50 minutes and earn his first career win. Huoppi added two goals against Bowdoin and senior midfielder Peter Gottlieb (Sharon, Conn.) notched a goal and an assist.

Trinity, coached by Mike Darr, finished the 2001 league campaign in fifth place with a 4-5 league mark. The Bantams, currently ranked No. 7 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III poll, will visit Connecticut College, ranked No. 6 in New England and No. 22 in the nation on May 1 in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC Championship Tournament. Men's Tennis (13-4) Finishes Second at NESCAC Championships

The Trinity College men's tennis team defeated Bates, 4-3, on April 23, to close out the 2001 dual season, and came in second place at the NESCAC Championships at Williams on April 27-29.

The top four Trinity singles players posted victories against Bates, led by a 6-1, 6-3, win by senior co-captain Rostyslav Orach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at the No. 1 position. Freshmen No. 3 Csaba Godry (Budapest, Hungary) and No. 4 Scott Levy (Waban, Mass.) also won their matches in straight sets.

Orach and Lawrence paced Trinity to its second-place performance at the NESCAC Championships, as Orach won three matches to capture the No. 1 singles title and teamed wioth Lawrence to win the No. 1 doubles title with three victories.

Levy and sophomore Muammar Khan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) also won three doubles matches, before dropping a three-set match in the No. 2 doubles finals, while Godry won two matches in straight sets to advance to the finals of the No. 3 singles flight. Godry also lost a three-set match in the finals. Khan and senior co-captain George Kaneb (Cornwall, Ontario) made the semifinals in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles flights, respectively, while Levy recovered from a second round loss to win the No. 4 consolation tourney with two triumphs.

Orach leads the Bantams with a perfect 16-0 dual singles record and a 26-1 overall mark this season. Orach/Lawrence is 14-1 in dual doubles matches and 24-2 overall, while Lawrence is 14-1 in dual singles matches and 20-3 overall. Khan has a 14-4 singles record and Levy and Godry are 12-6. Khan/Levy is 9-5 in duals and 14-7 overall as a doubles tandem.

Trinity, coached by Paul Assaiante, is currently ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III East region and No. 11 in the nation. Orach is the No. 2 singles player in the East and No. 7 in the nation, while Lawrence is No. 4 in the East and No. 18 in the nation. Orach and Lawrence make up the No. 1 doubles tandem in the East and the No. 3 duo in the nation, while Levy/Khan is ranked No. 8 in doubles in the East.

Rival Finishes Second in Penn Relays Heptathlon for Outdoor Track

The Trinity College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams enjoyed an outstanding second-place performance by women's senior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, Conn.) in the heptathlon at the Penn Relays on April 24-25 at Pennsylvania. The Bantams also competed at the NESCAC Championships at Wesleyan on April 28-29, finishing sixth out of 11 teams in the men's meet and 10th out of 11 in the women's meet.

Rival totaled a College-record 4,658 points in Philadelphia, including season-high results in the 100-meter hurdles (15.09 s, ninth), high jump (1.65 m, 1st), 200-meter dash (26.5 s, fifth), javelin (30.06 m, sixth, and 800-meter run (2:34.29, seventh), as well as a career-high heave of 10.72 m innthe shot put.

Rival's score also qualifies her for the NCAA Division III National Championships for the third consecutive season. She finished fifth in 1998, earning All-American honors, and was leading after three events last spring before suffering a disqualification in the 200 meters.

Sophomore Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) won 1,500-meter run at the NESCAC Championships with a time of 3:57.89. Rival placed second in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.04, and freshman Matt Dahlmeier (Rumson, N.J.) was second in the discus with a throw of 40.88 m. Sophomore James Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshmen Chris Madison (Chatham, N.Y.) and Francis Vincent (East Lyme, Conn.) finished third in the 5,000-meter run (15:18.26), the 400-meter hurdles (56.34), and the long jump (6.35 m), respectively.

Men's Rowing Takes Graff Cup

The Trinity College men's varsity eight crew took home the Graff Cup in a race against state and NESCAC rivals Wesleyan and Connecticut College on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. on April 28. The women's varsity eight finished second to Wesleyan but ahead of Connecticut College.

The men won in a season-best time of 5:55.70 and the women finished first in a season-best time of 6:52.1. The men's varsity eight, coached by Steve Fluhr, has finished first in its last three races and is ranked No. 25 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches (CRC) national poll. The women's varsity eight, coached by Erica Schwab, is ranked No. 11 in the CRC Division II/III national poll.
