Baseball (22-5, 9-3) All But Clinches Post-Season Bid in Maine
The Trinity College baseball team recovered from a 12-5 loss against Eastern Connecticut on April 18, with a 13-6 win at NESCAC East rival Bowdoin on April 20, and a 6/13-4/6 sweep at Bowdoin on April 21. The Bantams also defeated division foe Bates, 14-6, on the road on April 22.
Against Eastern Connecticut, junior second baseman Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.) had three hits and two RBI, and classmate Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) had a double and a single.
Senior co-captain right-hander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) ended a four-game Bantam losing streak with a seven-hitter in the first game at Bowdoin. Sophomore Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) led the Trinity offense with four hits, while Spanos smacked a single, a double, and a triple and junior Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) had three hits, a double, and four RBI. Sophomore catcher Robert Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.) added three hits and a double and Freimuth had three hits.
Spanos totaled five hits, three doubles and four runs, including his 15th double of the season to set a new College-record, during the Bowdoin twinbill. Sophomore right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) improved to 4-1, allowing three hits over six innings, and freshman righty Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) pitched a hitless ninth to earn his fourth save of the season in the first game. Freimuth added three hits and three RBI, including his 108th career run-batted-in to become the College's all-time leader, and junior Alan Andreini (Greenwich, Conn.) had a single, a double and two RBI.
In the nightcap, Piantek belted his sixth homer of the season and also had a single, two runs, and two RBI, while sophomore Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) had two hits, two RBI, and a double. Senior co-captain right-hander Jack Richardson (Arlington, Va.) pitched a complete game to improve to 5-1 on the mound for the season.
Junior righty Justin Olewnik (Cheshire, Conn.) struck out six over five innings to improve to 2-0 in his second career start against Bates. Freshman catcher Tony O'Shaughnessy (Manchester, N.H.) had a career-high four hits with two RBI, while junior first baseman Nick Callini (Westfield, Mass.) notched two hits, three runs, and three RBI and Freimuth had a pair of hits and three runs.
Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, is in second place in the NESCAC East Division with a 9-3 record in the league. The Bantams have completed their league schedule and will clinch a bid to the inaugural NESCAC Championship Tournament with a Bowdoin loss in one of its final six league games.
Jarrett Bayliss is second in the NESCAC in earned run average at 1.38, to go along with his 6-1 record. Freimuth is eighth in the league in hitting with a .400 batting average (42-105) and Spanos is 10th at .389 (44-113).
Trinity is currently ranked No. 5 in the New England Baseball Coaches Division III poll. This week's New England Poll:

Softball (5-20, 0-6) Rebounds Out of League
The Trinity College softball team was swept in a NESCAC East doubleheader, 5/12-2/0, against Tufts on April 17, but won at Wesleyan, 3-1, on April 18. The Bantams lost, 7-2, at Western Connecticut on April 19, before rebounding to sweep the Merchant Marine Academy, 12/9-0/1, on April 21.
Against Tufts, sophomore Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) and freshman Lauren McDowell (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) combined to allow six hits in the first game on the mound.
McDermott came back the next day at Wesleyan and tossed a six-hit, complete game, while junior catcher Clare Bullock (Columbia, S.C.) had two hits and two RBI including the game-winning, two-run single. Sophomore first baseman Maureen Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) also smacked two hits for the Trinity offense.
Senior co-captain third baseman Brianna Stanton (West Des Moines, Iowa) had two hits at Western Connecticut, which was ranked No. 9 in the nation at the time of the game.
In the sweep of King's Point, McDermott pitched a five-inning, one-hit shutout with five strikeouts in the first game, and McDowell hurled a six-inning two-hitter in the nightcap. Sophomore outfielder Kelly Kempner (East Amherst, N.Y.) paced the Bantam offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs, while Heneghan was 3-for-5 with four runs and Stanton had three hits and three RBI.
Sophomore outfielder Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) had a double, a triple, and a home run with five RBI for the day, and senior tri-captain shortstop Tricia Mase (North Branford, Conn.) had two hits and three stolen bases in the second game for the Bantams.
Trinity, coached by Tammi Hyde, is currently in fifth place in the NESCAC East Division at 0-6.
Taylor Sets Assist Record for Women's Lacrosse (7-7, 1-5)
The Trinity College women's lacrosse defeated Wesleyan on the road, 10-6, on April 17, but lost, 15-5, at Middlebury on April 21.
Against Wesleyan, junior goalkeeper Kelly Jo Burnett (Pennington, N.J.) made 18 saves, including 11 stops and one goal allowed in the second half. Junior midfielder Anna Sullivan (Boston, Mass.) had three goals and an assist, while sophomore middie Elizabeth Miller (Weston, Mass.) scored three times and junior tri-captain attack Ashley Taylor (Washington, D.C.) notched a goal and three assists.
Miller scored three goals at Middlebury, while Sullivan scored the Bantams' other two and Taylor dished out a pair of assists. Middlebury was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the time of the game.
Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, is in ninth place in the 10-team NESCAC with a 2-6 league mark. The Bantams can clinch a bid to the inaugural NESCAC Championship Tournament with a loss by Tufts against Connecticut College and a Trinity win against Bowdoin on April 28.
Sullivan and Taylor are tied for the NESCAC lead in scoring, while Taylor's assist total places her tied for 14th in the nation. Sullivan has 41 goals and 12 assists for 53 points and Taylor has 22 goals and 31 assists. Miller is fifth in the league in scoring with 36 goals and eight assists for a total of 44 points. Taylor set a new College season assist record last week, breaking the previous mark of 24 held by Robin Leary.
Trinity is currently ranked No. 19 in the Laxpower Division III Power Ratings. The Bantams will finish the 2001 regular season against Bowdoin, ranked No. 10 in the Laxpower ratings and No. 15 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III national poll, on April 28.
Men's Lacrosse (5-6, 3-4) Falls to Top teams
The Trinity College men's lacrosse team lost, 13-12, at NESCAC rival Wesleyan on April 18 and, 13-8, against league foe Middlebury, on April 21.
Against Wesleyan, which was ranked No. 3 in New England and No. 17 in the nation at the time, Trinity was outscored 5-3 in the fourth quarter for a heartbreaking loss. Freshman attackman David Huoppi (Pomfret, Conn.) came off the bench to pace the Bantams in scoring with three goals and an assist, while senior tri-captain Mark Tassie (Hopewell, N.J.) scored three times. Senior attackman Rob Morse (Winchester, Mass.) had a goal and three assists and classmate Brian Andre (Brooklyn, N.Y.) notched a goal and two assists. Junior goalie Eric Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) made 16 saves.
Tassie added two goals, along with junior Sean Rohan (South Hadley, Mass.), against Middlebury, which was ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 7 at the time of the game. Morse assisted on a pair of goals and Huoppi scored a goal and assisted on another score.
Trinity, coached by Mike Darr, is currently in fifth place in the 10-team NESCAC with a 3-4 league record. The Bantams are currently ranked No. 6 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III poll. Trinity will play Bates, ranked No. 10 in New England on the artificial turf at Harvard on April 25, and finish the regular season at Bowdoin, ranked No. 5 in New England and No. 19 in the Laxpower Division III Power Ratings, on April 28. Men's Tennis (12-4) Beats Brandeis and Coast Guard
The Trinity College men's tennis team defeated Brandeis, 6-1, on April 16, and blanked Coast Guard, 7-0, on the road on April 19, before dropping a 6-1 match at Williams on April 21.
Senior co-captain Rostyslav Orach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted a 3-0 record for the week, including a 6-0, 6-0 win against the top-ranked singles player in the East region (Josh Lefkowitz of Williams). Orach also won all three doubles matches, playing with freshman Richard Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario).
Orach leads the Bantams with a perfect 16-0 dual singles record and a 23-1 overall mark this season. Orach/Lawrence is 14-1 in dual doubles matches and 21-2 overall, while Lawrence is 14-1 in dual singles matches and 18-2 overall. Sophomore Muammar Khan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) has a 13-3 singles record and freshman Scott Levy (Waban, Mass.) is 12-6.
Trinity, coached by Paul Assaiante, is currently ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III East region and No. 11 in the nation. Orach is the No. 2 singles player in the East and No. 7 in the nation, while Lawrence is No. 4 in the East and No. 18 in the nation. Orach and Lawrence make up the No. 1 doubles tandem in the East and the No. 3 duo in the nation, while Levy/Khan is ranked No. 8 in doubles in the East.
Rowing Sweeps Race in Worcester
The Trinity College women's and men's varsity eight crews each finished first in a multiple team race hosted by Worcester Tech on Lake Quinsigamond, Mass. on April 21. The men won in a time of 6:12.70 and the women finished first in a time of 7:08.20. The men's varsity eight, coached by Steve Fluhr, has finished first in its last two races.
