Men's Soccer (5-3) Erupts at Vassar

The Trinity College men's soccer team, coached by Ed Mighten (10th season) split a pair of road games last week, dropping a 2-0 decision at Amherst College and trouncing Vassar College, 5-0. The Bantams broke a three-game losing streak at Vassar with their top scoring output of the fall.

Freshman forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, MA) registered a hat trick against the Vassar Brewers to raise his team-leading total to six goals. Two other players had multi-point efforts in the game, including senior forward Mike Wilson (Longmeadow, MA) with two goals, junior forward Brett MacQuarrie (Cohasset, MA) with one goal and one assist. Junior goalkeeper Tom Hambrick-Stowe (Lancaster, PA) played a spectacular game in a losing effort against Amherst, totaling 10 saves, and followed with a four-save shutout performance at Vassar. Hambrick-Stowe has four shutouts this season.

Trinity is currently tied for ninth place in the NSCAA Division III New England Regional Poll this Week:

Volleyball (10-10) Has Tough Stretch

The Trinity College volleyball team ran into some trouble last week, losing four of five matches. The Bantams, coached by Fran Vandermeer (fourth season), lost to Amherst College, 3-1, at home, and dropped decisions against Franklin & Marshall, Middlebury College, and Wheaton College at the Eastern Connecticut State University Invitational over the weekend. Trinity managed a 3-2 win against Coast Guard in the tourney's opening round and played tough against Division III powerhouses F & M and Middlebury.

Sophomore Molly Roach (Austin, TX) earned all-tournamnet honors, totaling 37 kills and 23 digs in four matches. Roach is among the top five on the team in kills (146), asisst (23), aces (20), digs (156), and blocks (27.

The Bantams will host the NESCAC Quad Tourtnament this weekend with Colby, Connecticut College, and Hamilton visiting Hartford.

Women's Soccer (3-4-1) Has Undefeated Week

The Trinity women's soccer team, coached by Michael Smith (third season), did not allow a goal in two games last week. Trinity tied Smith College, 0-0, and downed Colby College, 2-0. The Bantams have surrendered just one goal in the last five games, going back to Sept. 22.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Bradley (Mansfield, CT) recorded shutouts against both Smith and Colby to give her three for the year. She totaled 25 saves in the two games to bring her goals against average to 0.95 in 660 minutes.

Junior Kerry Hood (Londonderry, NH) and sophomore Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, MA) scored for Trinity against Colby. Both are upperclassmen who were not with the team in 1998. Hood transferred to Trinity from the University of Michigan this fall, while Dullea did not play soccer her freshman year, although she was a top player for the Bantam women's basketball squad. Hood leads the team in scoring with eight points on four goals.

Women's Tennis (5-2) Sends Players to Rolex

The Trinity College women's tennis team, coached by Wendy Bartlett (16th season), continued its winning ways with a pair of victories last week. The Bantams easily disposed of the Division I Connecticut Huskies (7-2) and the Vassar College Brewers (8-1). Trinity has won five straight matches after starting the season 0-2.

Tri-captains Caroline Hughes (Lowell, MA), Erica Johnson (Harvard, MA), and Heidi Polsen (Chester, NJ) are enjoying fine senior seasons in both singles and doubles. Each won two singles matches, while Johnson and Hughes teamed up for a pair of doubles wins and Polsen teamed with junior Olga Bogatyrenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) for two doubles triumphs. The trio is a combined 14-7 in singles this fall, and the three are 70-34 in their Bantam careers.

Field Hockey (1-6) Wins First

Trinity College field hockey team, coached by Kara Tierney (first season), lost, 2-1, last week at Connecticut College. The team posted its first win of the season, and the first for Tierney, 2-1, over Colby last week. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Bantams, going back to a Final Four loss to Middlebury last November.

Junior midfielder Whitney Brown (Northfield, IL) came alive with two goals and an assist in the two games. Brown had been held scoreless over the first five contests, after finishing second in scoring as a sophomore with 12 goals and three assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, FL) notched eight saves against Connecticut College and 19 saves agaisnt Colby. Martin has played all but eight minutes in goal this season.

Cross Country Hosts Bantamm Invitational

The Trinity College men's and women's cross country teams hosted the seventh annual Bantam Invitational at Wickham Park last weekend, and Trinity junior Todd Markelz (Homer, AK) won the men's race with a time of 26:21.

Freshman Leann Rheaume (Pittsfield, MA) finished second in the women's race with a time of 20:15 to help her team place second.

Markelz, who has come in first place in all but one race this fall, was followed by freshmen Jim Emord (Bridgewater, MA) and Ryan Bak (Suffield, CT), senior co-captain David Kyle (Topsfield, MA), freshman Ryan Lerner (Manchester, CT), senior Andrew Malick (Piedmont, CA), and freshman Steve Coakley (South Windsor, CT) in the top 11 runners. Emord was third at 27:07, Bak was fifth at 27:17, Kyle was seventh at 27:35, Lerner was eighth at 27:56, Malick was 10th at 28:07, and Coakley was 11th at 28:20.

In the women's race, sophomore Caroline Leary (Bedford, MA) finished seven seconds behind Rheaume in third place, junior captain Kara Barbalunga (Dalton, MA) was fifth at 21:01, and freshman Kate Klein (Huntington, VT) was eighth at 21:34
