Women's Basketball (3-4) Beats Coast Guard and Smith

The Trinity College women's basketball team went 2-2 over the last two weeks, defeating Coast Guard on Nov. 29, 58-52, and Smith College on Dec. 7, 55-26, but falling to Springfield on Dec. 5, 71-50, and undefeated Babson on Dec. 9, 73-67.

In the win at Coast Guard, sophomore center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) and junior forward Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, Mass.) paced the Bantams, each totaling 20 points. Senior guard Jackie Siscone (Hammonton, N.J.) dished out a career-high 12 assists. Dullea totaled 16 points, five rebounds, and six assists and McCloskey notched 11 points and six boards in a losing effort against Springfield.

Against Smith, McCloskey again paced the Bantams with 24 points and pulled down 14 boards. Playing its third game in five days at Babson, the Bantams gave one of their best efforts of the season but fell short in the closing minutes. Sophomore guard Shannon Herold (Downer's Grove, Ill.) scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Dullea had 18 points and eight rebounds, while McCloskey tallied 17 points and 12 boards.

The Bantams currently hold the ninth-best overall record in the NESCAC at 3-4. Trinity currently leads the NESCAC in field goal percentage at 43.8 and is third in three-point field goal percentage at 34.0.

McCloskey leads the league in rebounding at 11.7 per game and field goal percentage at 63.2. She is also second in the NESCAC in scoring at 18.3 ppg. Siscone is third in the league in assists with 5.1 per game and fifth in three-point field goal percentage at 31.7. Dullea is fifth in the NESCAC in scoring at 15.9 ppg and 10th in field goal percentage at 44.9.

McCloskey, who was the Columbus Multimedia Division III Northeast Region Player of the Week and the NESCAC Player of the Week for her play in the season's first two games, was named to the NESCAC honor roll for her performance in three games last week. She averaged 17.3 ppg and 10.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 64.7 percent from the field.

Men's Ice Hockey (6-1-1, 4-0) Wins Three Straight

The Trinity College men's ice hockey team won its last three games, including a 5-0 shutout at St. Anselm on Dec. 1, and 5-3 wins against both New England College and Johnson and Wales on Dec. 2 and Dec. 7, respectively.

Junior goaltender Geoffrey Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) stopped all 35 shots he faced in the win over the Division II St. Anselm Hawks. Junior forward Jeff Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore forward Greg O'Leary (Reading, Mass.) each notched a goal and a pair of assists. Junior defenseman Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, Mich.) notched a goal and an assist and junior forward Matt Greason (North Bridgton, Maine) had two assists for the Bantams.

The next day at New England College, five different players found the net for Trinity. Griffin, freshman defenseman Sean Doherty (Kennebunk, Maine), Greason, Fenwick, and senior forward Denis Petrov (Novokuznetsk, Russia) each tallied a goal. Faulkner stopped 37 shots in the 5-3 victory.

Against visiting Johnson and Wales, the Bantams again received goals from five different sources. Greason, freshmen Tom Pierandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Dan Gyllstrom (Hudson, Mass.), Fenwick, and O'Leary all found the net in the 5-3 win. Sophomore goaltender Evan Munno (Lake Grove, N.Y.) held the Wildcats scoreless in the third period, collecting 18 saves total.

Trinity is currently alone atop the NESCAC standings with a 4-0 record in the league. Greason is second in the league in scoring with eight goals and eight assists for 16 points, while Petrov is tied for sixth with two goals and nine assists for 11 points. Faulkner, whose combined 72 saves in the weekend road sweep of St. Anselm and New England College earned him NESCAC Co-Player of the Week honors, is fourth in the NESCAC with a 2.14 GAA.

Men's Basketball (6-1) Won't Lose

The Trinity College men's basketball team continued to roll, winning four games over the past two weeks against Western Connecticut, Coast Guard, Salve Regina, and Southern Vermont. Heading into the break, the Bantams are riding a six-game winning streak.

In the squad's 77-64 win over Western Connecticut on November 28, junior swingman Colin Tabb (Somers, Conn.) scored a game-high 18 points, along with seven rebounds and five assists. Three other Bantams scored in double figures, including senior center Julian Bah (Concord, Mass.) with 15 points and senior guard Mike Keohane (Belmont, Mass.) and junior forward Brian Dion (East Haven, Conn.) with 11 points apiece. In the 73-56 victory at Coast Guard onDecember 2, Tabb stepped up again to lead Trinity with 21 points, and Dion added 15 points and eight rebounds. In the 57-54 win over Salve Regina, Bah blocked a college-record 11 shots and added 10 points and nine rebounds to lead the Bantams. Two days later, junior forward Jarod Greene ( New Haven, Conn.) paced Trinity with 11 points and 10 rebounds in their 95-47 rout of Southern Vermont. Tabb added 14 points, four assists, and three steals in the victory.

The Bantams currently hold the fourth-best record in the NESCAC at 6-1. Trinity is currently third in the NESCAC in field goal percentage at 45.1. Bah leads the league in blocked shots at 3.2 per game. Senior guard Scott Wallach (Scarsdale, N.Y.) is tied for first in three-point field goal percentage in the league at 52.2, while Dion is sixth in the league in field goal percentage at 52.6 and seventh in rebounding with 8.0 per game. Tabb is eighth in the NESCAC in both scoring with 17.3 ppg and rebounding with 7.7 per contest. Keohane is tied for fifth in the conference with a 82.1 free throw percentage.

Women's Ice Hockey (0-4-1) Loses Pair

The Trinity College women's ice hockey team dropped a pair of league games at Hamilton and at Rochester Tech on Dec. 1 and 2. The Bantams earned their first points of the season with a 1-1 tie against Buffalo State on Dec. 9.

Sophomore Lindsay Peet (Stowe, Vt.) scored the only goal for Trinity in the 3-1 loss to Hamilton and freshman Mimi MacKinnon (Glen Cove, N.Y.) made 41 saves in goal. In the 4-1 loss against Rochester Tech, freshman Samantha Lee (Hartsdale, N.Y.) put the Bantams on the board with a goal assisted by junior defensemen Kate Heney (Burlington, Vt.) and Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, Fla.). In the tie against Buffalo, Peet again scored the squad's lone goal.

Trinity is currently tied with three other teams at 0-4 for 16th-place in the 19-team Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Swimming (M1-2/W0-4) Wins One for Noone

The Trinity College men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by Brandeis on Dec. 2 and the women narrowly lost, 152-147, in their home opener against Mount Holyoke on Dec. 5. On Dec. 7, the men's squad posted a 150-116 win over Connecticut College in its home opener to give first-year Head Coach Kristen Noone her first career victory. The women lost to Connecticut College, 163-134.

Freshman Julia Kaye (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) swam well against Brandeis, posting wins in the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.13) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:20.51). Senior diver Brad Albus (New Canaan, Conn.) won both diving events with a 239.25 in the one-meter and 245.25 in the three-meter. Sophomore Chris Rorer (Villanova, Pa.) added first-place performances in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:23.97) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.31).

Freshman Jennifer Bartlett (Marblehead, Mass.) paced Trinity against Mount Holyoke with first-places swims in the 50- and 100-yard breaststrokes at 33.37 and 1:13.03, respectively.

Against Connecticut College, junior Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, Conn.) won three events to lead the Trinity men. Sterling swam times of 10:57.60 in the 1,000-yard freestyle, 5:17.36 in the 500-yard freestyle, and 2:12.os in the 200-yard butterfly. Kaye won three events for the women's team, including the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:37.54), the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.92), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.49).

Indoor Track and Field Competes at Wesleyan and Harvard

The Trinity College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in the Wesleyan Relays on Dec. 2 and the Harvard Invitational on Dec. 9 to open the 2000-01 campaign.

Senior Oliver Page (Wilton, Conn.) starred for Trinity at Wesleyan with a first-place finish in the pole vault at a height of 13'00.00". Freshman Francis Vincent (East Lyme, Conn.) made his collegiate track debut with a first-place performance in the triple jump with a leap of 5.87 meters.

Also at Wesleyan, sophomore Lauren Young (Old Saybrook, Conn.) posted a pair of second-place finishes in the shot put (8.36 meters) and the weight throw (11.5 meters). Senior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, Conn.) finished second in the 55-meter high hurdles at 8.97 seconds and in the high jump with a height of 4'11.75".

Competing against schools from all the NCAA divisions and top area club teams at Harvard, two Bantam senior co-captains had outstanding performances. Rival finished second in the high jump, clearing a height of 5'01.00", and senior co-captain Todd Markelz (Homer, Alaska) was second in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:14.36.

Wrestling (1-1) Splits Tri-Match

The Trinity College wrestling team split a tri-match at home with Norwich Western New England on Dec. 2. The Bantams defeated Western New England, 31-21, but dropped a 33-15 decision against Norwich.

Senior captain Riad deFreitas (Silver Spring, Md.) won matches at both 157 and 149 pounds, while sophomore Lucas McKittrick (Lincolnville, Maine) posted triumphs at 165 and 174 pounds for the Bantams.

Seven Bantams are ranked among the top six wrestlers in their weight class. Senior captain Steven Mulvihill (Melrose, Mass.) is the top-ranked heavyweight, while fellow senior captains Mike Marcucio (Derby, Conn.), deFreitas and Ted Govola (Rocky Hill, Conn.) are second, fifth, and fifth at 133 pounds, 149 pounds,and 165 pounds, respectively.

Other ranked Trinity wrestlers are sophomore Eric Egolf (Glastonbury, Conn.), who is fifth at 141 pounds and freshmen Mike Doros (East Hartford, Conn.) and Wesley Connell (Simsbury, Conn.). Doros is fourth at 184 pounds and Connell is sixth in the 165 pound class.

Men's Squash (3-0) Continues Dominance

The Trinity College men's squash team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, picked up where it left off last spring with 9-0 wins over MIT and Tufts on Nov. 28 and a 9-0 blanking of Franklin and Marshall in its home opener on Dec. 3. The Bantams have won 38 consecutive matches dating back to the 1998 National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association (NISRA) Potter Trophy Championship match (a 5-4 loss to Harvard), and 32 straight matches at home.

Sophomore Nickolas Kyme (Pembroke, Bermuda) played at the No. 1 position against MIT and Tufts and No. 3 against Franklin and Marshall, posting 3-0 triumphs in all of his three matches.

Senior Josh Miller (San Francisco, Calif.), junior Noah Wimmer (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.), sophomore Thaddeus Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa.), and freshmen Michael Ferreira (Stamford, England) and Pat Malloy (Boston, Mass.) each posted a victory in all three matches.

Women's Squash (1-0) Beats Williams

The Trinity College women's squash team, tied for No. 3 in the nation with Brown and Princeton, defeated Williams College, 6-3, on the road on Dec. 2. Senior captain Janine Thompson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa), the No.2 ranked individual in nation, did not allow a single point in her 3-0 win at the No.1 position. Junior Samantha Lewins (Bromley, Zimbabwe), the 15th-ranked individual, won easily at No. 2 by a score of 3-0.

Four freshman made their collegiate debuts with 3-0 singles victories. Sarah Frank (Philadelphia, Pa.) won at the No. 3 position, Carolynne Minkowski (Baltimore, Md.) won at No. 4, Barbara Escobar (Stamford, Conn.) won at No. 8, and Pamela Saunders (Harrare, Zimbabwe) won at No. 9.
