The Trinity College football team lost its final game of the 2000 season, 37-13, against Wesleyan University in the 100th meeting between the schools in Middletown on November 11. The Bantams, in their first season under Head Coach Chuck Priore, posted a record of .500 or better for the 20th time in the last 21 seasons.
Freshman running back Tom Pierandri (Ridgefield, Conn.) rushed 18 times for 67 yards and a touchdown, while sophomore kicker Skip Sullivan (Milton, Mass.) nailed field goals of 27 and 42 yards for Trinity. Freshman wide receiver Andrew Eastman (Milton, Mass.) came off the bench to catch three passes for 53 yards. Pierandri was named to the NESCAC honor roll for his performance.
Defensively, junior outside linebacker Matt Dorn (Braintree, Mass.) was a factor with eight tackles (five solo), an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Senior cornerback Charles Botts (Boston, Mass.) made seven tackles and broke up three passes, and sophomore inside linebacker David Midura (Easton, Mass.) added seven hits for the Bantams.
Pierandri led Trinity in rushing with 532 yards on 137 carries for a 3.9 yards per attempt average. Pierandri also led the team in all-purpose yards with 595. Sophomore running back Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, Mass.) finished with 316 yards on 80 carries despite missing three games with an ankle injury.
Sophomore quarterback Greg Ward (Avon, Conn.) started all eight games and completed 115 in 248 attempts for 1,323 yards, eight touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Sophomore wide receiver Kevin Waters (Garden City, N.Y.) paced Trinity in receiving with 26 catches for 358 yards. Senior tight end Peter Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) made 16 catches for 186 yards and junior wide out Mike Indelicato (Norwood, N.J.) had 15 catches for 153 yards.
Midura finished as the squad's top tackler with 61 total tackles, including 32 solo. Dorn led the team in solo tackles with 35, giving him a total of 52, while junior free safety Steven Cella (Peabody, Mass.) was third on the team with 48 tackles (23 solo). Cella also led Trinity in interceptions with four and pass breakups with eight, and Dorn added two picks and five breakups. Sophomore outside linebacker Ben Ramsey (Wayland, Mass.) had a team-high four sacks, and sophomore strong safety Gavin O'Reilly (Cheshire, Conn.) totaled three interceptions, three pass breakups, and four tackles for losses.
Cella was the feature kick returner, averaging 10.0 yards on 25 punt returns with one touchdown and 21.2 yards on 14 kickoff returns. Sullivan connected on eight out of 14 field goal attempts, while freshman Joe Wahl (Rumford, R.I.) averaged 34.7 yards on 56 punts with a long of 59 yards. Sullivan's totals put him in a tie for 15th in NCAA Division III with 1.00 field goals per game.
Trinity finished in sixth place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with a 4-4 record. The Bantams were fourth in the league in offensive yards per game with 340.8. Pierandri finished as the fifth-leading rusher in the NESCAC with 70.5 rushing yards per game, while Ward was fifth in passing with an efficiency rating of 94.6. Wahl was fifth-leading punter in the league and Waters finished tied for seventh in the league in receiving with 3.3 catches per contest.
Women's Cross Country Finishes 11th at New Englands
The Trinity College women's cross country team finished 11th as a team at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships on November 11 at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.
Sophomore Leanne Rheaume (Pittsfield, Mass.). paced the Bantams with a 26th-place finish and a time of 18:40.18. Rheaume narrowly missed qualifying for NCAA Division III National Championships, finishing less than a half-second behind the 25th-place finisher (25 runners qualify for Nationals).
Freshman Karen Roy (Ashford, Conn.) finished 41 st with a time of 18:55.20, while junior captain Caroline Leary (Bedford, Mass.) was the third Bantam harrier to cross the finish line in 19:42.
