Baseball (21-7) Wins Four of Five
The Trinity College baseball team defeated Springfield College, 6-1, on April 24, Rhode Island College, 6-2, on April 25, and thumped Western Connecticut State University, 26-3, on April 26 before splitting a double-header at Brandeis University on April 29. The Bantams, coached by Bill Decker, have won 13 of their last 16 games.
Against Springfield, junior right-hander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Sophomore outfielder Alan Andreini (Greenwich, CT) had two hits, a double and a pair of RBI, and senior third baseman Jayson Barbarotta (Trumbull, CT) added two hits, a double, and one RBI.
Senior first/baseman/pitcher Brian Powell (Holyoke, MA) allowed six hits in a complete game and added an RBI single in a win over Rhode Island College. Senior co-captain catcher Jake Miles (Lewistown, IL) had two hits, including an RBI triple.
Trinity pounded 25 hits at Western Connecticut and had nine players with two hits or more. Trinity also set new College records with 13 doubles and 15 extra-base hits in the game. Barbarotta had four hits, two doubles, and three runs, senior co-captain James Klocek (Grafton, MA) had three hits, four runs, and five RBI, and junior catcher Dane McCormick (Carte Madera, CA) totaled three hits, two doubles, and three RBI.
Trinity dropped a 7-4 decision in the first game at Brandeis, despite a lead-off home run by sophomore second baseman Greg Spanos (Auburn, MA). In the nightcap, Barbarotta had three hits and three RBI and Powell had three hits in a 12-6 Bantam victory. Trinity scored nine runs in the third inning. Senior right-hander Brendan Moss (Orange, CT) allowed one earned runs over five innings to up his season record to 4-2.
Trinity is tied with Bowdoin for the best record in the nine-team NESCAC thus far at 7-3. Barbarotta was named the NESCAC Player of the Week for his efforts in the five games. He batted .545 with six runs, four doubles, two stolen bases, and five RBI. Powell leads the league in hitting with a .468 batting average, while Freimuth is fourth at .429 and Spanos is sixth at .413. Freshman right-hander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) is fourth in the league in earned run average at 1.60 in 39.1 innings, Powell is fifth with a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings, and Jarrett Bayliss, Jonah's older brother, is eighth at 2.44 in 48 innings.
The Bantams are currently ranked No. 6 in the New England Coaches' Division III Poll and No. 22 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division III National Poll.

Softball (10-19) Ends Season in Style
The Trinity College softball team defeated crosstown rival St. Joseph College, 2-0, to finish the 2000 campaign with a 10-19 record.
Freshman right-hander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, RI) tossed a three-hit shutout with two strikeouts and no walks against St. Joseph. Trinity scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, including the game-winner on a solo homer by senior catcher Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA). Freshman outfielder Susan Kelly (Milford, MA) added a pair of hits.
Trinity has the fifth-best record in the nine-team NESCAC at 4-5. Junior third baseman Brianna Stanton is third in the league in hitting with a .421 average.
Men's Lacrosse (9-4) Drops Pair
The Trinity College men's lacrosse team lost, 7-3, against Eastern Connecticut State University on April 26, and, 16-11, against NESCAC rival Bowdoin on April 29 to finish the 2000 regular season at 9-4.
Senior tri-captain goalkeeper Matt Jerry (Acton, MA) made 18 saves against Eastern Connecticut, while the Trinity defensive unit, led by seniors Robb Kennedy (Darien, CT) and Bill Moyer (Brookline, MA), sophomore Matt Gjerulff (Rockville, MD), and freshman Will Seifert (Tampa, FL) held an opponent in to less than 10 points for the eighth time in 12 games. Freshman attackman Ravi Pillay (Bethesda, MD) had a goal and an assist to lead the offense.
Against Bowdoin, junior midfielder Mark Tassie (Hopewell, NJ) netted four goals and senior attackman Bobby Souers (Montgomery Village, MD) added two goals and two assists. Jerry stopped 17 shots in goal.
Souers recently became the College all-time assist leader, breaking the previous record of 87 held by Clint Brown 79. Souers has 90 career assists and 191 career points, which is three points shy of the tying Scott Growney 81 for second on the College's all-time list.
Trinity has the third-best record in the NESCAC at 6-3. Jerry is fourth in the league in goalkeeping with an 9.81 goals against average, while Souers is sixth in scoring with 53 points (33 goals, 20 assists). The Bantams should receive a bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship Tournament, which will begin on Wednesday, May 10.
The Bantams are currently tied with Lynchburg College at No. 17 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, No. 23 in the Laxpower.com Division III power ratings, and No. 5 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) regional poll.
Trinity hosts Eastern Connecticut State University, ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 20 in the nation, on Wednesday, April 26 at 4 p.m. and league rival Bowdoin College, ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 8 in the nation, on Saturday, April 29 at 2:30 p.m. This week's New England poll:

Women's Lacrosse (3-8) Falls Short Against Polar Bears
The Trinity College women's lacrosse team lost, 10-8, against NESCAC rival Bowdoin College on April 29 to finish the 2000 season at 3-8.
Senior attack Amanda Marsh (Princeton, NJ) recorded a hat trick in her final career-game and classmate Kate Derosier (Longmeadow, MA) stopped 17 Bowdoin shots. Sophomore midfielder Anna Sullivan (Woodstock, VT) also had three goals, while sophomore attack Ashley Taylor (Washington, DC) had a goal and two assists, and junior midfielder Quinn Smith (Concord, NH) scored a goal and an assist.
Trinity is in eighth place NESCAC at 2-7. Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, is ranked No. 18 in the Laxpower.com national power ratings and boasts the toughest schedule in Division III women's lacrosse.
Men's Rowing Captures Graf Cup
The Trinity College men's rowing team defeated Wesleyan University and Connecticut College with a time of 5:58.10 on April 29 to win the first annual Norman T. Graf Cup on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA. The women's varsity-eight lost to Wesleyan but finished ahead of Connecticut College.
The Trinity women's squad is 3-5 and ranked No. 18 in the NCAA Division II/III Varsity Eight national poll. The men's varsity-eight is 7-0 is tied with Marietta College for No. 23 in the United States Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association (CRCA) National Poll.
The Bantams will compete in the New England Championships on Saturday, May 6 at Lake Quinsigamond. The Trinity men's varsity-eight, men's novice-eight, men's freshman-eight, and women's freshman-eight are all seeded No. 1 in their races.
Men's Tennis (13-4) Ties for Fourth at NESCAC's
The Trinity College men's tennis team finished tied for fourth place with Bowdoin College in the NESCAC Championships at Middlebury College on April 28-30. The Bantams scored 15 points, 19 behind NESCAC champion Williams College with 34.
Senior captain Matt Sharnoff (Orange, CT) won two matches in the No. 4 singles flight before defaulting in the finals due to an injury. Fellow senior captain Alex Valente (New York, NY) advanced to the semifinals of the No. 2 singles flight, and freshman Muammar Khan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) made the semifinals of the No. 5 singles flight. Sharnoff earned All-NESCAC honors for his performance.
The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante, are currently ranked No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III East rankings.
Outdoor Track & Field
The Trinity College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the NESCAC Championships at Tufts University on April 29 and 30.
Junior captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, CT) scored 4,404 points top win the womens heptathlon. Her score was 380 points higher than her nearest competitor and an NCAA-qualifying mark. Rival exceled in the running events with a 14.85 in the 100-meter hurdles, a 26.00 in the 200-meter dash, and a 2:26.16 in the 800-meter run. Rival won the evnt despite a shoulder injury, which hampered her performance in the throwing events. For her efforts, Rival was named as the ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.
Junior co-captain Todd Markelz (Homer, AK) and freshman James Emord (Bridgewater, MA) place fourth and fifth, respectively in the 5,000-meter run for the mens squad. Markelz finished at 15:10.24 and Emord was 11.62 seconds behind at 15:21.86.
In the mens high jump, senior co-captain Ben Goss (York, ME) came in second with a leap of 6-4.75, and freshman David Wilson (Sharon, MA) scored with a fifth-place finish at 6-0.75. Wilson also scored points in the triple jump with a distance of 43-1, while sophomore Sam Sonn (Attleboro, MA) finished seventh with a distance of 4201.25". Freshman Ryan Bak (Suffield, MA) finished second in the 1,500-meters with a time of 3:57.52.
Sophomore Beth Landry (Brighton, MI) finished second in the womens triple jump at 35-11.5, followed by classmate Jennifer Villa (West Hyannisport, MA) who came in seventh at 34-7. Landry also came in second place in the long jump, clearing a height of 16-3.25.
Rival, Markelz, Emord, Goss, Wilson, Sonn, Bak, Landry, and Villa all earned All-NESCAC honors for their performances, as did freshman Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, MA) in the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, FL) in the javelin, senior Andrew Malick (Piedmont, CA) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and sophomore Nick Fox (Dublin, NH) in the discus.
Trinity will compete in the NCAA Division III New England Championships on May 5 and 6. The men's championship meet will be at Springfield College, while the women's meet will be held at Colby College.
