Baseball (16-5) Takes Eight out of Nine

The Trinity College baseball team defeated Albertus Magnus College, 16-6, on April 12 before splitting a double-header with New England Small College Athletic Conference rival Tufts University on April 15 and winning at Babson College, 16-6, on April 16. The Bantams, coached by Bill Decker, have won eight of their last nine games.

Against Albertus, senior co-captain catcher Jake Miles (Lewistown, IL) hit a pair of three-run homers and freshman righthander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) picked up his fourth win of the season with five innings pitched and no earned runs. Senior reliever Paul Gemelli (Hanover, MA) and sophomore righthander Justin Olewnik (Pittsfield, MA) combined for four innings of scoreless relief.

Junior righthander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, MA), the older brother of Jonah, pitched an eight-inning shutout in a 1-0 win at Tufts. Senior first baseman Brian Powell (Holyoke, MA) singled home the winning run in the top of the eighth inning and sophomore outfielder Alan Andreini (Greenwich, CT) had three hits. Tufts blanked Trinity, 8-0, in the nightcap.

Powell led the Bantams once again against Babson with four hits and three RBI, including a double and a solo home run. Andreini had his second three-hit game in two days.

Trinity has the best record in the nine-team NESCAC thus far at 7-3. Powell is second in the league in hitting with a .481 batting average, while sophomore shortstop Andrew Freimuth is seventh at .440. Jonah Bayliss is third in the league in earned run average at 1.32 in 27.1 innings pitched. Powell was named the NESCAC honor roll for his outstanding performance in the four games in which he batted .571 (8 for 14).

The Bantams are currently ranked No. 4 in the New England Coaches' Division III Poll and No. 16 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division III National Poll. Trinity will play at Eastern Connecticut State University, ranked No. 1in New England and No. 2 in the nation, on Wednesday, Apr. 19 at 7 p.m. This week's New England poll:

Softball (8-17) Has Winning Week

The Trinity College softball team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 8-3, on April 11 before sweeping a NESCAC double-header at Bowdoin College and being swept in a non-league double-header at the University of New England on April 15 and 16.

Freshman righthander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, RI) tossed a seven-hitter and junior shortstop Tricia Mase (North Branford, MA) had two hits and a double against Eastern Connecticut to begin a three-game winning streak.

Against Bowdoin, McDermott went the distance in the first game, a 5-3 triumph, and picked up the victory in the relief in the second game, 9-8, in eight innings. McDermott had three earned runs in eight-and-one -third innings to even her season record at 7-7. Senior catcher Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA) hit her second home run of the season in the first game and freshman centerfielder Laura Heath (Windsor, CT) had two hits and scored the winning run on a Bowdoin error.

University of New England swept Trinity, 6-4, and 5-3. Sophomore second baseman Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, MA) had three hits for Trinity in the first game and McDermott allowed eight hits and no earned runs in the second game.

Trinity has the fifth-best record in the nine-team NESCAC at 3-5. McDermott was named the NESCAC honor roll for her outstanding performance in the five games. She went 3-1 in four appearances with a 1.29 ERA and 10 strikeouts.

Men's Lacrosse (8-1) Splits with Amherst and Williams

The Trinity College men's lacrosse team won, 12-7, at NESCAC rival Amherst College on April 12, but the Bantams dropped their first game of the season, 17-13, at league rival Williams College on April 15

Senior tri-captain attackman Bobby Souers (Montgomery Village, MD) had three goals and an assist, while freshman attackman Ravi Pillay (Bethesda, MD) scored one goal with three assists and junior midfielder Mark Tassie (Hopewell, NJ) scored two goals with one assist. Senior tri-captain goalie Matt Jerry (Acton, MA) stopped 14 Amherst shots.

Against Williams, Souers netted four goals and had two assists and senior midfielder Andy Hayes (Philadelphia, PA) scored three times and assisted on a fourth goal. Senior attackman Alex Ullman (North Haven, CT) had three goals and Tassie scored once with four assists. Jerry totaled 13 saves and allowed more than 10 goals for the first time this spring.

A major reason for the Trinity success this season is the high face-off percentage. The Bantams have won 55.4 percent of their face-offs, with most of those won by senior midfielder Michael Engel (Newton, MA).

Trinity has the second-best record in the NESCAC at 5-1. Jerry is second in the league in goalkeeping with an 8.64 goals against average, while Souers is third in scoring with 43 points (29 goals, 14 assists).

The Bantams are currently ranked No. 19 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, No. 25 in the Laxpower.com Division III power ratings, and No. 5 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) regional poll.

Trinity hosts NESCAC rival Wesleyan University, ranked No. 7 in New England, on Wednesday, April 7 at 4 p.m. and plays at league rival Middlebury College, ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 4 in the nation, on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.

Women's Lacrosse (3-5) Has Streak Stopped at Three

The Trinity College women's lacrosse team won a NESCAC contest against Wesleyan University, 12-4, on April 12 before losing a league game at Williams College, 12-4, on April 15.

Against Wesleyan, sophomore attacks Anna Sullivan (Woodstock, VT) and Ashley Taylor (Washington, DC) both netted career-highs of six goals each and senior captain midfielder Jess Martin (Alexandria, VA) had two goals. Senior goalkeeper Kate Derosier (Longmeadow, MA) stopped 11 Wesleyan shots.

Trinity struggled at Williams despite 27 saves by Derosier and three goals by Martin. The 27 saves was one shy of the College record set by Derosier last spring against Middlebury.

Trinity has the seventh-best record in the 10-team NESCAC at 2-4. Derosier was named to the NESCAC honor roll after totaling 38 saves and a .721 save percentage in the two games. Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, is ranked No. 10 in the Laxpower.com national power ratings.

Men's Rowing Wins Four-Team Race

The Trinity College men's rowing team defeated the College of the Holy Cross, the University of Massachusetts, and Middlebury College in the varsity-eight race at Worcester, MA with a time of 6:37.2. The women's varsity-eight finished ahead of Mount Holyoke College with a time of 8:29, but finished behind Holy Cross and Smith College.

The Trinity women's squad is currently tied for No. 17 with Colby College and the University of San Diego in the NCAA Division II/III Varsity Eight national poll. The men's varsity eight is ranked No. 25 in the United States Rowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association (CRCA) National Poll.

 Men's Tennis (12-2) Wins Fifth in a Row

The Trinity College men's tennis team won by identical 6-1 scores over NESCAC rivals Tufts University on April 11 and Wesleyan University on April 14, before blanking NESCAC rival, Connecticut College, and Brandeis University, both 7-0, on April 15 and 16, respectively.

The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante, are currently ranked No. 5 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III East rankings. Trinity plays at No. 1 MIT on Thursday, April 20 at 4 p.m. and hosts No. 2 and NESCAC rival Williams College on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
