Baseball (13-4) Wins Five Straight

 

The Trinity College baseball team defeated Worcester Tech, 3-2, on April 3 and Westfield State, 9-4, on April 5 before sweeping New England Small College Athletic Conference rival Wesleyan University, 8-4, and, 13-12, on April 8. The Bantams, coached by Bill Decker, have won five straight games.

Against WPI, freshman righthander Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) tossed a three-hitter for his second win of the season and sophomore second baseman Greg Spanos (Auburn, MA) had two hits and an RBI.

Senior second baseman Todd Brodeur (Auburn, MA) led the Bantams against Westfield with three hits and three RBI, while sophomore shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, CT) had two hits and an RBI.

Freimuth homered and doubled in the opening game at Wesleyan and junior righthander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, MA), the older brother of Jonah, scattered seven hits and struck out 10 to earn his third win. Trinity blew leads of 7-0 and 12-9 in the second Wesleyan game but rallied to score a run in the seventh for a 13-12 triumph. The younger Bayliss picked up his third win of the spring in relief. Both Bayliss brothers are 3-1 this season.

Freimuith was named the NESCA Player of the Week for his outstanding performance in the four victories. He batted .500 (8 of 16) with five doubles, eight RBI, and two home runs.

Trinity has the best record in the nine-team NESCAC thus far at 6-2. Freimuth is second in the league in hitting with a .473 batting average, while senior first baseman Brian Powell is fourth at .436, and Spanos is tied for 10th at .408. Jonah Bayliss is second in the league in earned run average at 1.21 in 22.1 innings pitched.

The Bantams are currently ranked No. 4 in the New England Coaches' Division III Poll and No. 16 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division III National Poll. This week's New England poll:

Softball (5-15) Beats Tufts

The Trinity College softball team lost at home to Clark University, 7-6, on April 4 and on the road at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 7-2, on April 6 before spiltting a NESCAC doubleheader with Tufts University, winning, 4-2, and losing the second game, 19-1.

Clark, ranked No. 8 in the nation, scored all seven of its runs on homers. Junior third baseman Brianna Stanton (Clive, IA) kept the Bantams in the game with two doubles and an RBI. Stanton also had a pair of hits against Coast Guard and senior catcher Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA) notched three hits, a double, and two RBI.

Against Tufts, freshman leftfielder Kelly Kempner (Amherst, NY) drove in the winning run with a two-RBI double in the sixth inning of the first game. Luz and senior shortstop Tricia Mase (Northford, CT) had a pair of hits each and freshman righthander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, RI) went the distance allowing just five hits to record her fourth win of the season. Luz was named to the NESCAC honor roll after going 7 for 9 in the four games.

Trinity has the fifth-best record in the nine-team NESCAC at 1-5.

Men's Lacrosse (7-0) Wins at Colby

The Trinity College men's lacrosse team continued its great season with a NESCAC win at Colby College,11-6, on April 8.

Senior tri-captain attackman Bobby Souers (Montgomery Village, MD) had two goals and two assists, while senior attackman Alex Ullman (North Haven, CT) and freshman attackman Ravi Pillay (Bethesda, MD) scored two goals each. Senior tri-captain goalie Matt Jerry (Acton, MA) stopped 10 Colby shots.

The Trinity defense, led by senior All-American candidate Robb Kennedy (Darien, CT), senior Bill Moyer (Brookline, MA), sophomore Matt Gjerulff (Rockville, MD), and freshman Will Seifert (Tampa, FL) has allowed just 24 goals in the last three games and has not given up more than 10 goals in a game this season.

Trinity has the best record in the NESCAC thus far at 4-0. Jerry is second in the league in goalkeeping with a 7.30 goals against average, while Souers is fifth in scoring with 32 points (22 goals, 10 assists).

The Bantams are currently ranked No. 19 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll, No. 10 in the Laxpower.com Division III power ratings, and No. 5 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) regioanl poll.

Women's Lacrosse (2-4) Erupts at Bates

The Trinity College women's lacrosse team lost NESCAC contests to Connecticut College, 6-4, on April 4 and at Colby College, 14-12, on April 7, before winning its first league game convincingly at Bates College, 17-4, on April 8.

Against Connecticut College, senior goalkeeper Kate Derosier (Longmeadow, MA) made seven saves and junior attack Quinn Smith (Concord, NH) scored a pair of goals. Smith put in four goals against Colby, as did senior captain midfielder Jess Martin (Alexandria, VA), while sophomore attack Anna Sullivan (Woodstock, VT) scored twice.

Trinity netted its highest scoring output of the season against Bates, led by Sullivan with a career-high five goals. Martin had three goals and two assists, freshman attack Laura Davis (Bethesda, MD) had three goals and one assists, and senior attack Melissa Marlette (Buffalo, NY) had two goals and an assist. Derosier stopped seven shots in goal. martin was named to the NESCAC honor roll after totaling seven goals and two assists in the three games.

Trinity, which has the seventh-best record in the 10-team NESCAC at 1-3, is ranked No. 10 in the Laxpower.com national power ratings.

 Men's Tennis (8-2) Splits with Amherst and Coast Guard

The Trinity College men's tennis team lost a close match, 4-2, against NESCAC Amherst College on April 4, but downed the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 6-1, on April 6.

Junior No. 1 Rostyslav Orach (New York, NY) and freshman No. 5 Muammar Khan (Dhaka, Bangladesh) were the only Bantams to post victories in both matches. All three doubles tandems posted victories against Coast Guard, including senior captains Alex Valente (New York, NY) and Jared Sheikh (Woodbury, CT) who won an easy 8-3 decision at No. 3.

The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante, are currently ranked No. 8 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll.

Outdoor Track & Field Competes at Smith

The Trinity College outdoor track and field team competed in the Smith College Relays on April 8.

Women's junior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, CT) won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 16.07 seconds and sophomore Beth Landry (Brighton, MI) finished second in both the long jump (4.91 meters) and the triple jump (10.34 meters). Sophomore Jennifer Villa (Hyannisport, MA) placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.11 meters and classmate Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, FL) came in third in the javelin throw with a heave of 31.54 meters.

For the men's squad, senior David Kyle (Topsfield, MA) won the 10,000 meters with a time of 33:24.91 and junior co-captain Todd Markelz (Homer, AK) won the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:02.14. Freshman Ryan Bak (Suffield, CT) took first place in the 1,500 meters at 2:04.41 and senior Andrew Malick (Piedmont, CA) came in second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:50.86.

Men's Rowing Beats Coast Guard

The Trinity College men's rowing team defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy in the varsity-eight race with a time of 5:40.60. The women's varsity-eight finished ahead of Mount Holyoke College with a time of 6:39.10, but was 12.90 seconds behind first-place Coast Guard.

The Trinity women's squad is currently rated No. 17 in the NCAA Division II/III Varsity Eight national poll.
