The Trinity College baseball team posted a 7-2 record on their annual trip to Fort Myers, FL to participate in the Gene Cusic Classic. Trinity beat the University of Chicago, 6-3, and New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Colby College, 12-6, on March 20 and swept league rival Middlebury College, 8/6-1/0, in a doubleheader on March 21, before splitting with Salve Regina University, 1/27-8/3, on March 23. Trinity split with Union College, 2/15-3/1, on March 23 and shut out Hartwick College, 2-0, on March 25. The Bantams, coached by Bill Decker, played nine games in five days after having doubleheaders rained out on March 18 and 19.
Against Chicago and Colby, sophomore shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, CT) totaled five hits, one double, one home run, and four RBI, while junior righthander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, MA) tossed six shutout innings against Chicago to pick up the first win of the spring.
In the sweep of Middlebury, senior co-captain rightfielder James Klocek (Grafton, MA) and senior third baseman Jayson Barbarotta (Trumbull, CT) each had three hits in the first game and senior lefthander Brian Powell (Holyoke, MA) pitched a one-hitter in the second game.
In the split with Salve Regina, sophomore second baseman Greg Spanos (Auburn, MA) homered in the opening game loss, but Barbarotta and senior utility player Todd Brodeur (Auburn, MA) both went 4 for 4 and combined for seven RBI in the Trinity victory in the second game.
Against Union, Spanos allowed just six hits on the mound and Freimuth homered in a losing effort in the first game. In the second game, senior co-captain Jake Miles (Lewistown, IL) homered twice in the Trinity win.
In the final game of the trip against Hartwick, Bayliss tossed a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and Spanos had three hits. For his outstanding performance over the course of the week, Bayliss earned a spot on the NESCAC honor roll.
Trinity has the best record in the NESCAC thus far at 3-0. Spanos leads the league in hitting with a .500 batting average, while Freimuth is seventh at .424. Bayliss is the top pitcher in the NESCAC with a 0.00 earned run average.
Trinity is ranked among the top teams in New England and the nation. The Bantams are currently ranked No. 5 in the New England Coaches" Division III Poll. This week's poll:

Softball (2-10) Struggles in California
The Trinity College softball team posted a 4-10 record on their spring trip to Orange, CA to participate in the Sun West 2000 Tournament hosted by Chapman University.
After losses to Lewis & Clark College (14-3), Pacific Lutheran University (10-9), the University of Eastern Oregon (10-2), NESCAC rival Williams College (5-3), and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (15-4), the Bantams picked up their first win, 5-1, over Macalester College on March 21. Trinity went on to lose, 5-0, to Willamette College and 8-3, against league rival Tufts University on March 22, and lost, 10-2, against LaVerne College and 11-0, against the College of St. Catherine on March 23.
On March 25, the final day of the tourney, Trinity dropped a 9-1 decision to Gustavus Adolphus College before ending on a positive note with a 12-8 triumph over the College of St. Benedict.
Against Lewis & Clark and Pacific Lutheran, sophomore infielder Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, MA) had a two hits in the early game and sophomore outfielder Lesley Santini (Winchester, MA) led the way with two hits and two RBI in the second game.
Senior catcher Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA) had two hits against Eastern Oregon and freshman leftfielder Kelly Kempner (Amherst, NY) had three hits and two RBI in the Williams game.
In the split with Wis.-Eau Claire and Macalester, junior shortstop Tricia Mase (Northford, CT) went two for three and freshman righthander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, RI) picked up her first career win with a seven-hitter.
Against La Verne and St. Catherine, junior third baseman Brianna Stanton (Clive, IA) totaled four hits and doubled twice in the two games, while freshman second baseman Susan Kelly (Milford, MA) had a double, a triple, and two RBI in a last-inning loss to St. Catherine.
Trinity is winless in the NESCAC at 0-2. McDermott is the seventh in the league with a 3.94 earned run average.
Men's Lacrosse (4-0) Enjoys Best Start Since 1994
The Trinity College men's lacrosse team is off to its best start since 1994 with a 4-0 record after four neutral site contests. Trinity defeated Snively League rival Bates College, 15-10, on March 12 at Harvard University, and downed Hamilton College, 10-7, and Geneseo State, 27-4, in Port Richey, FL before defeating Franklin & Marshall College, 15-10, at the University of Pennsylvania on March 25.
Senior tri-captain attackman Bobby Souers (Montgomery Village, MD) collected five goals and two assists against Hamilton. Senior midfielder Andy Hayes (Philadelphia, PA) scored twice and senior tri-captain goalkeeper Matt Jerry (Acton, MA) made 12 saves.
Against Geneseo State, Trinity tied a College-record with 27 goals, led by four apiece by Hayes and Souers. Several young players got involved in the scoring, including sophomore midfielder Alex Westcott (Princeton, NJ), sophomore attackman Sean Rohan (South Hadley, MA), and freshman attackman Liam Allen (Yorktown, NY) with three goals each. Rohan and junior attackman Rob Morse (Winchester, MA), who also scored twice, added three assists.
Souers led the way once again with four goals and two assists against Franklin & Marshall. Hayes and freshman attackman Ravi Pillay (Bethesda, MD) scored four goals each, while senior attackman Alex Ullman (North Haven, CT) recorded a goal and two assists.
Souers earned a spot on the NESCAC honor roll for his outstanding performance. He totaled 15 goals and seven assists for 22 points in the four games. Trinity is tied with four other teams for the best record in the Snively League at 1-0. Souers leads the league in scoring with 22 points. Jerry is the top goalkeeper in the league with a 6.22 goals against average.
Trinity is ranked among the top teams in New England and the nation. The Bantams are currently ranked No. 21 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) national poll and 17th in the Laxpower Division III power ratings.
Women's Lacrosse (1-1) Splits in Panama City
The Trinity College women's lacrosse team beat Hamilton College, 10-9, but lost to William Smith College, 23-9, in its spring trip to Panama City, FL.
Sophomore attack Anna Sullivan (Woodstock, VT) scored four goals against Hamilton, while junior midfielder Quinn Smith (Concord, NH) had three goals and an assists and sophomore attack Ashley Taylor (Washington, DC) added two goals and two assists. Senior goalie Kate Derosier (Longmeadow, MA) made 14 saves. Trinity scored twice in the final minute in the victory.
Against William Smith, Smith, Taylor, Sullivan, and senior captain midfielder Jess Martin (Alexandria, VA) all scored two goals in a losing effort.
Trinity is ranked among the top teams in New England and the nation. The Bantams are currently ranked No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) national poll and 22nd in the Laxpower Division III power ratings.
Men's Tennis (5-1) Almost Sweeps in South Carolina
The Trinity College men's tennis team, defeated NESCAC rivals Colby College, 7-0 on March 20, Hamilton College, 7-0 on March 21, and Middlebury College, 6-1 on March 24, on their annual spring trip to Hilton Head, SC. The Bantams also defeated Hobart College, 7-0 on March 22, but dropped a 6-1 decision against league foe Bowdoin College.
Trinity, which also defeated Springfield College in the fall, are led senior captain Alex Valente (New York, NY) who has six dual singles victories in six matches. Senior captain Matt Sharnoff (Orange, CT) is 5-1, while junior All-American Rostyslav Orach (Brooklyn, NY) and sophomore David Bovino (Aspen, CO) are both 4-1.
Head Coach Paul Assaiante has mixed and matched several different doubles combinations which have combined for a 14-4 in individual dual record. Valente and Orach are 2-0 as a doubles tandem.
Trinity is ranked among the top teams in New England and the nation. The Bantams are currently ranked No. 8 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III national rankings.
