Women's Basketball (22-5, 7-2) Wins First ECAC Title
The Trinity College womens basketball team captured its first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship title. Trinity defeated Babson College, 66-53, in the quarterfinals on March 1 and New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rivals Colby College, 69-46, and Middlebury, 71-61, in the Final Four on March 4 and 5. The Bantams, coached by Maureen Pine, finished the season with six straight wins to post a College-record 22-5 record.
Sophomore guard McKenzie Corby (Bethel, CT) rescued the Bantams against Babson in the quarterfinals, coming off the bench to score a career-high 26 points along with five rebounds and seven steals. Corby scored eight points in a 10-point Trinity point late in the fourth quarter to propel the Bantams to a comeback victory. Corby was the only Bantam to score in double figures, while senior co-captain forward Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA) totaled nine points and 11 boards.
In the semifinals against Colby, sophomore guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, MA) finished with a game-high 18 points and five rebounds, while senior forward Gretchen MacColl (Portland, OR) added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Jackie Siscone (Hammonton, NJ) dished out a career-high nine assists.
Freshman center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, MA) scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Trinity roared back from a 15-point halftime deficit against Middlebury. McCloskey made nine of 15 shots from the field and scored 15 of her points in the second half. Dullea scored 11 of her 15 points and pulled down all eight of her rebounds in the second half, earning ECAC Tournament MVP honors.
Luz and fellow senior co-captain guard Megan Shutte (Allentown, PA) scored 10 points each in their final collegiate games. Shutte also played in her 100th career game for Trinity, setting a new College record.
Trinity finished the season first in the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .419 and third in three-point percentage at .308. MacColl was the league's most accurate shooter with a .594 field goal percentage (148 of 249), second in rebounding at 10.1 per game, and fifth in scoring at 15.3 points per game. Siscone finished third in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .350 (64 of 183) and tied with Shutte for ninth in assists with 3.4 per contest.
MacColl was named to the All-New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) First Team and was selected to play in the NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic on Saturday, March 18 at 2:30 p.m. as part of Final Four Weekend at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT.
Sonn and Rival Earns All-ECAC Honors for Indoor Track & Field
The Trinity College men's and women's indoor track and field teams each sent representatives to the ECAC Division III Championships on March 4 at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. Sophomore Sam Sonn (Attleboro, MA) and junior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, CT) gave All-ECAC performances in the triple jump and the 55-meter high hurdles, respectively.
Sonn leaped a personal-best and team season-best distance of 14-feet, two-and -one-quarter inches to finish fourth. Rival took fifth in the hurdles with a personal-best and team season-best time of 8.62 seconds. Fellow junior co-captain Marisa Eddy (Los Angeles, CA) also ran a personal and team season-best 2:16.91 in the 800-meter run, narrowly missing All-ECAC honors with an eighth-place finish.
Eddy and freshman Ryan Bak (Suffield, CT) have both qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 800-meter run, which will be held at Illinois Wesleyan University on March 10-12.
Marcucio and Foresi Compete in Wrestling (14-11) Nationals
Junior Michael Marcucio (Derby, CT) and freshman Mark Foresi (West Springfield, MA) both won one of three matches as the Trinity College wrestling team tied for 45th of 59 teams at the NCAA Division III National Championships at Ohio Northern University on March 3-4.
The two wrestlers had identical performances, losing their opening matches and rebounding to win their first-round consolation match. Marcucio, at 133 pounds, and Foresi, at 141 pounds, both lost second-round consolation matches by 6-3 scores.
Cowie Makes NISRA Singles Finals for Men's Squash (18-0)
Trinity College senior Marcus Cowie (Norfolk, England) won five straight matches before losing in the finals of the National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association (NISRA) Singles Championships held at Williams College on March 3-5.
Cowie won four preliminary round matches by 3-0 scores, before downing Tim Wyant, of Harvard, 3-1, in the semifinals. Cowie, who won the Singles title as a freshman and a sophomore, was defeated in the finals, 3-0, by defending champion Peter Yik, of Princeton.
Senior co-captain Preston Quick (Lakewood, CO) also won four 3-0 matches before losing to Yik in the semifinals. Ten Trinity players qualified for the singles tourney, including sophomores Rohan Bhappu (Bombay, India) and Rohan Juneja (Bombay, India) and freshman Jonathan Smith (Leeds, England). Bhappu and Smith both captured consolation titles with five wins in six matches, including a 3-0 triumph by Bhappu over over Juneja in the finals.
Thompson Reaches WISA Semifinals for Women's Squash (15-3)
Trinity College junior Janine Thompson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) won four straight matches before losing in the semifinals of the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA) Singles Championships held at Williams College on March 3-5.
Thompson won all four of her preliminary round matches by 3-0 scores, but fell to Laura Keating, of Yale University, 3-0, in the semifinals. Sophomore Samantha Lewins (Bromley, Zimbabwe) won two of four matches in the tournament, reaching a consolation semifinal round.
