Coach Pine Wins 200th for Women's Basketball (17-5, 5-2)

The Trinity College women’s basketball team split a pair of conference games in Maine, losing in overtime, 66-61, at Colby on Feb. 18 and winning at Bowdoin, 65-45, on Feb. 19. The Bantams are tied with Colby for second place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with a 5-2 record. With the win at Bowdoin, Head Coach Maureen Pine reached the 200-win mark in her 13th season. Pine is 200-101 for a .664 winning percentage.

Sophomore guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, MA) scored 23 points and senior forward Gretchen MacColl (Portland, OR) scored 15 points with nine rebounds for Trinity against Colby. The Bantams led the entire game but were outscored, 12-7, in the extra frame.

In the win at Bowdoin, MacColl finished with 19 points and 18 boards, and made eight of 11 shots from the field. Dullea pitched in with 16 points and five rebounds and freshman center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, MA) totaled 10 points off the bench.

MacColl was named to the NESCAC, the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) honor rolls, averaging 17.0 points and 14.0 rebounds in the two games. Dullea also earned a spot on the NEWBA honor roll for her outstanding play.

Trinity is second the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .424 and third in three-point percentage at .318. MacColl is the league's most accurate shooter with a .608 field goal percentage (132 of 217), is first in rebounding at 10.6 per game, and fifth in scoring at 16.4 points per game. Siscone is fourth in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .358 (54 of 151) and Shutte is tied for seventh in assists with 3.4 per contest.

Trinity is currently rated among the top teams in New England and the nation. The Bantams are ranked 21st in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) national poll, 34th in the d3hoops.com Division III national poll, seventh in the NEWBA Division III poll, fifth in the Columbus Multimedia TER Division III Northeast Ratings, and third in the NCAA Division III Northeast Poll.

Men's Basketball (14-6, 3-4) Splits Weekend Games

The Trinity College men’s basketball team lost to NESCAC rival Colby College, 86-74, on Feb. 18, but recovered from a five-point halftime deficit to down league foe Bowdoin College, 72-66, on Feb. 19. The Bantams are tied for fifth place with Colby at 3-4 in NESCAC competition.

Junior co-captain guard Michael LaBella (Middletown, CT) paced the Bantams against Colby, scoring 20 points off the bench. Junior guard Scott Wallach (Scarsdale, NY) added 10 points and eight assists for Trinity.

Against Bowdoin, senior co-captain forward Rory Neal (Springfield, MA) scored 18 points, making seven of eight shots from the field, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Wallach and sophomore forward Colin Tabb (Somers, CT) had 11 points apiece, while junior center Julian Bah (Concord, MA) totaled nine points, seven boards, and three blocks

Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, continues to lead the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .477., is second in three-point accuracy with a .380 percentage, and second in free throw percentage at .697. Neal is the league's most accurate shooter with a .608 field goal percentage (124 of 204), its top rebounder at 11.1 per game, tied for third in blocked shots at 1.7 per game, and tied for fifth in scoring at 15.9 points per game. Wallach is third in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .439 and is seventh in scoring at 14.3 ppg.

Men's Ice Hockey (9-14, 6-11) Misses Playoffs

The Trinity College men's ice hockey team defeated the University of Southern Maine, 9-4, on Feb. 18, but lost at Salem State College, 5-4, on Feb. 19. Trinity finishes the season in eighth place in the nine-team NESCAC with 12 points and failed to make the postseason tournament for the first time since 1996.

Senior forward Scott Rickard (Manchester, CT) led the onslaught against Southern Maine with a goal and three assists, while freshman forward Greg O'Leary (Reading, MA) notched two goals and one assists. Freshman forward Dustin Kim (Laurel, MD) scored the first two goals of his Bantam career, senior tri-captain forward Ryan Southard (Woburn, MA) had one goal and two assists, and sophomore defenseman Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, MI) totaled three assists.

Against Salem State, Kim scored his third career goal and his third in two games, while Southard had two goals and an assist, and Rickard assisted on two goals. Sophomore goalie Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, OH) made 26 saves, giving him 47 in the two games.

Trinity, coached by John Dunham, finished second in the NESCAC in penalty killing with an .868 percentage and third in penalty minutes with 15.1 per game. Fenwick is sixth in the league in scoring among defenseman with 19 points (8 g, 11 a), while Faulkner is third in the league in saves with 580.

Rickard finished as the Bantams' leading scorer with 22 points (7 g, 15 a), and senior tri-captain forward Dan Lyons (West Haven, CT) was second with 21 points (team-high 9 g, 12 a). Fenwick finished third, junior forward Denis Petrov (Novokwznecky, Russia) finished fourth with 18 points (7 g, 11 a), and senior forward Mikko Auvinen (Heinola, Finland) was fifth with 17 points (7 g, 10 a). Faulkner had an 8-12 record with a 3.79 GAA and a .881 save percentage in 1,236 minutes in goal.

Women’s Ice Hockey (3-14-1, 2-14-1) Finishes Season

The Trinity College women's hockey team lost, 10-0, against Bowdoin College on Feb. 19 and, 7-2, against Colby College on Feb. 20. The Bantams, coached by Joe Snecinski, finish the season in 16th place in the 18-team Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and failed to qualify for the postseason tournament.

Sophomore goalie Eleanore Maletta (Greenwich, CT) notched 60 saves in the two games, including 35 against Bowdoin. Senior tri-captain forward Devon Binch (New Canaan, CT) and freshman forward Katie Bowman (Summit, NJ) scored the Trinity goals against Colby. Maletta, who was converted to goalie from defense in preseason, finished eighth in the league in saves with 454.

Bowman was Trinity's leading scorer with 14 points (10 g, 4 a), followed by senior tri-captain forward Erin Sousa (Belmont, MA) with 12 points (6 g, 6 a), senior tri-captain forward Amanda Lydon (Hampton Falls, NH) with nine points (5 g, 4 a), senior tri-captain forward Binch with eight points (4g, 4a), and freshman forward Lindsay Peet (Stowe, VT) with seven points (1 g, 6 a). Maletta posted a 3-12-1 record with a 7.09 GAA and a .799 save percentage in 965 minutes in goal.

Rival Wins New England Pentathlon for Indoor Track & Field

The Trinity College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in the NCAA Division III New England Championships on Feb. 19. The Bantams placed 10th of 20 teams in the women's championships at Bowdoin College, and Trinity came in 18th of 19 teams at the men's championships at Bates College.

Junior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, CT) won the pentathlon with 3,140 points. She finished the 55-meter high hurdles in 8.61 seconds and the 800-meter run in 2:35.92, jumped 5-feet, four-and-one -half inches in the high jump, leaped 13-feet, eight-and-three-quarters inches in the long jump, and tossed the shot put 34-feet, three-inches. Rival had finished second in the pentathlon in 1998-99.

Fellow junior co-captain Marisa Eddy (Los Angeles, CA) came in fourth place in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 2:20.44. Both Rival and Eddy earned All-New England honors for their performance.

Sophomore Oliver Page (New York, NY) cleared a height of 3.96 meters in the pole vault to earn All-New England honors for the Trinity men's squad.

Marcucio and Foresi Qualify for Nationals in Wrestling (13-11)

The Trinity College wrestling team competed in the New England Colege Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Championships on Feb. 19 at Western New England College. The Bantams, coached by Sebby Amato, placed sixth of 15 teams with 67.5 points.

Junior Michael Marcucio (Derby, CT) and freshman Mark Foresi (West Springfield, MA) were both selected as wild-card qualifiers to the NCAA Division III National Championships to be held Mar. 3-4 at Ohio Northern University.

Marcucio won four of five matches before losing in the finals at 133 pounds, while Foresi won three of four matches before losing in the 141-pound final. Marcucio and Foresi were both named All-New England for their second-place performances, and Foresi was honored as the NECCWA Rookie Wrestler of the Year. Foresi posted a 19-8 overall record and was 16-6 in dual matches with three pins in his rookie season.

Senior co-captain 197-pounder Steven Mulvihill (Melrose, MA) and junior 165-pounder Ted Govola (Rocky Hill, CT) both earned All-New England honors as well. Mulvihill won two of three matches before losing in the consolation finals to place fourth. Govola won three of four matches, after being upset in his first matches, including a win in the fifth-place match. Mulvihill, Govola, and Marcucio were All-New England selections last season, and Mulvihill and Marcucio made All-New England in 1997-98.

Co-Captains Earn All-New England for Women's Swimming & Diving

The Trinity College women's swimming and diving team competed in the NCAA Division III New England Championships on Feb. 18-20 at Bowdoin College. Trinity, coached by Amy Heasley Williams, place 15th of 31 teams.

Senior co-captains Emily Polito (Joliet, IL) and Carrie Rorer (Villanova, PA) both repeated their 1998-99 All-New England performances for the Bantams. Polito placed fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle at 18:14.38, fifth in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:15.41, and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:58.87. Rorer came in seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.19 and eighth in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:30.21.

The men's team will compete at the New England Championships on Feb. 25-27 at Bowdoin.

Men's Squash (15-0) Wins Dual Season Title

The Trinity College men's squash team defeated Princeton University, 7-2, at Hobart on Feb. 19 to capture the Intercollegiate Squash Association (ISA) dual season championships for the third year in a row.

The Bantams, who have won 32 consecutive matches dating back to the 1998 National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets' Association (NISRA) Team Championship, are ranked No. 1 in the nation entering the National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association (NISRA) Team Championships on Feb. 25-27 at Yale University.

Senior co-captain No. 2 Preston Quick (Lakewood, CO), sophomore No. 3 Lefika Ragontse (Gaborang, Botswana), freshman No. 5 Jonathan Smith (Leeds, England), junior No. 8 Loua Coetzee (Port Alfed, South Africa), and sophomore No. 9 Rohan Juneja (Bombay, India) all posted 3-0 victories over their Princeton opponents.

Women's Squash (15-3) Places Third at Howe Cup

The Trinity College women's squash lost its final regular season match, 7-2, at Princeton University Feb. 16, but rallied to defeat two of three Ivy League opponents at the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA) Howe Cup Team Championships at Yale University on Feb. 18-20. The Bantams, coached by Wendy Bartlett, placed a best-ever third in the Howe Cup.

Sophomore No. 5. Mollie Anderson (Buffalo, NY) and freshman No. 6 Clare Austin (Banbury, England) won matches for Trinity against Princeton. Anderson posted an undefeated dual-match record of 15-0 this season.

Trinity defeated Yale, 6-3, in the Howe Cup quarterfinals on Feb. 18 before dropping a 6-3 decision against Princeton in the semifinals on Feb. 19. Anderson and Austin posted victories in both matches, as did senior co-captain Randy DePree (Lake Forest, IL). In the third-place match against Harvard University on Feb. 20, Trinity's top five players won their matches to give the Bantams a 5-4 win and Coach Bartlett her 150-th career victory. Bartlett is 150-55 in her 16th season.

Junior No. 1 Janine Thompson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa), freshman No. 2 Nicola Clark (Brighton, England), senior co-captain No. 3 Gail Davie (Cheshire, England), sophomore No. 4 Samantha Lewins (Bromley, Zimbabwe), and Anderson posted wins against Harvard. Austin won all three of her Howe Cup matches.
