MacColl Scores 1,000th for Women's Basketball (16-4, 4-1)

The Trinity College women’s basketball team split a pair of non-conference games, defeating Salve Regina, 64-53, on Feb. 8 and losing at Hamilton, 77-70, on Feb. 12. The Bantams, who had won seven consecutive games prior to the Hamilton loss, are tied with Bates for first place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) with a 4-1 record. Head Coach Maureen Pine needs just one wins to reach the 200-mark for her career. She currently has a 199-100 record in 12-plus seasons.

Senior forward Gretchen MacColl (Portland, OR) scored 22 points and grabbed 21 rebounds against Salve Regina, while senior co-captain forward Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA) scored 17 points with nine rebounds, and sophomore guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, MA) added 11 points and seven assists. Luz made eight out of 11 shots from the field.

In the upset loss at Hamilton, which was 3-16 entering the game, MacColl became the sixth Bantam to score 1,000 points in her career. She finished with 18 points and 18 boards to give her a total of 1,005 points and 609 rebounds in her Trinity career. Luz pitched in with 16 points and 10 rebounds and senior co-captain guard Megan Shutte (Allentown, PA) totaled 10 points and five assists.

MacColl was named the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Player of the Week, averaging 20.0 points and 19.5 rebounds. She also earned a spot on the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) honor roll for her outstanding play. The NESCAC honor is her third league Player of the Week award in four weeks and the fourth time in a row a Trinity player has won or shared the award. Siscone won the ECAC Player of the Week award last week.

Trinity continues to lead the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .429 and is third in three-point percentage at .314. MacColl is the league's most accurate shooter with a .609 field goal percentage (120 of 197), is first in rebounding at 10.3 per game and third in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Siscone is fourth in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .365 (50 of 137) and Shutte is seventh in assists with 3.6 per contest.

Trinity is currently rated among the top teams in New England and the nation. The Bantams are ranked 31st in d3hoops.com Division national poll, fourth in the NEWBA Division III poll, fourth in the Columbus Multimedia TER Division III Northeast Ratings, and second in the NCAA Division III Northeast Poll.

 Men's Basketball (13-5, 2-3) Puts Streak Together

The Trinity College men’s basketball team defeated Elms College, 93-69, on Feb. 8 and Lasell College, 97-53, on Feb. 10, and dropped Hamilton College, 88-79, on Feb. 12. The Bantams, who had lost four of their last five games before beating Elms, are tied for fifth place with three other teams at 2-3 in NESCAC competition.

Junior center Julian Bah (Concord, MA) paced the Bantams against Elms, scoring a career-high 17 points. Bah made nine out of 10 free throw attempts and notched 11 rebounds, three steals, and four blocks. Sophomore reserve forward Jarod Greene (New Haven, CT) added 17 points, on seven out of 11 field-goal shooting, while sophomore forward Colin Tabb (Somers, CT) had 14 points, eight boards, and four steals.

Against Lasell, senior co-captain forward Rory Neal (Springfield, MA), who sat out the Elms game with an injury, scored 14 points and nine grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman reserve guard Matt Brogan (Belmar, NJ) scored a career-high 11 points, and Tabb recorded 11 points, seven assists, and five steals.

Neal scored 22 points and pulled down 19 rebounds against Hamilton and Bah had his second double-double in three games with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Tabb pitched in with 14 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, while junior guard Mike Keohane (Belmont, MA) added 13 points, four assists, and four blocks. Tabb earned a spot on the NESCAC honor roll for his solid all-around play.

Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, continues to lead the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .476., is fourth in three-point accuracy with a .375 percentage, and fifth in free throw percentage at .688. Neal is the league's most accurate shooter with a .602 field goal percentage (112 of 186), its top rebounder at 11.2 per game, tied for third in blocked shots at 1.7 per game, and fifth in scoring at 16.1 points per game. Junior guard Scott Wallach (Scarsdale, NY) is sixth in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .433 and is seventh in scoring at 14.8 ppg.

Maine Schools Sweep Men’s Ice Hockey (8-13, 5-10)

The Trinity College men's ice hockey team lost at home to NESCAC rivals Bowdoin College, 6-0, on Feb. 11, and Colby College, 4-2, on Feb. 12. Trinity is currently tied with Wesleyan University for seventh place in the nine-team NESCAC with 10 points.

Trinity, Wesleyan, and Connecticut College, which has nine points, are vying for the seventh and final bid to the NESCAC tournament with two games to play. The Bantams visit the University of Southern Maine on Feb. 18 and Salem State College on Feb. 19, while both Wesleyan and Connecticut College host Hamilton College and Skidmore College in the regular season's final weekend. Southern Maine, Salem State, and Skidmore are Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East teams and games played against them count in the NESCAC standings.

Sophomore goaltender Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, OH) saved 72 out of 80 shots in the losses to Bowdoin and Colby, while sophomore defenseman Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, MI) and freshman forward Greg O'Leary (Reading, MA) scored the Trinity goals against Colby. Junior forward Denis Petrov (Novokuznetsk, Russia) added two assists against Colby.

Trinity, coached by John Dunham, is second in the NESCAC in penalty killing with an .871 percentage and fourth in penalty minutes with 15.5 per game. Faulkner is third in the league in saves with 533.

Women’s Ice Hockey (3-12-1, 2-12-1) Loses at Williams & RPI

The Trinity College women's hockey team lost, 11-1, at Williams College and, 12-0, at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Feb. 12 and 13, respectively. The Bantams are currently tied for 15th place with five points in the 18-team ECAC.

Senior tri-captain forward Erin Sousa (Belmont, MA) scored the Trinity goal against Williams. Sophomore goalie Eleanore Maletta (Greenwich, CT) totaled 85 saves in the two games. Maletta, who was converted to goalie from defense in preseason, is eighth in the league in saves with 394.

Trinity, coached by Joe Snecinski, hosts Bowdoin College, ranked 10th in the nation, on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 4:30 p.m.

Indoor Track & Field Gets Last Chance at Smith

The Trinity College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Smith College Invitational on Feb. 5 in what was the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for the NCAA Division III New England Championships.

Sophomore Beth Landry (Brighton, MI) posted a pair of second-place finishes with a leap of 16-feet, 11-inches in the long jump and a leap of 34-feet, 9-inches in the triple jump. Junior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, CT) finished in second place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.40.

Senior David Kyle (Topsfield, MA) ran a 16:02.10 in the 5,000-meter run and sophomore Sam Sonn (Attleboro, MA) jumped a distance of 41-feet-nine inches in the triple jump for the Trinity men's squad.

Three men and Six women have qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Championships with two men's meets and one women's meet remaining in the regular season.

Senior co-captains Ben Goss (York, ME) and Todd Markelz (Homer, AK) and freshman Ryan Bak (Suffield, CT) are the Bantam men's qualifiers. Rival, fellow junior co-captain Marisa Eddy (Los Angeles, CA), Landry and fellow sophomores Caroline Leary (Bedford, MA) and Jennifer Villa (West Hyannisport, MA), and freshman Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, MA) have qualified for the Trinity women.

The women's indoor track and field team will compete in the New England Championships on Feb. 19 at Bowdoin College, while the men's squad will compete at New Englands on Feb. 19 at Bates College.

Wrestling (13-10) Ends Dual Season in Style

The Trinity College wrestling team beat Rhode Island College, 30-12, and upset Bridgewater State College, ranked No. 5 in New England, 22-16, on Feb. 12 at Bridgewater.

The Bantams, coached by Sebby Amato, finished the regular season sixth in the New England Division III Coaches' Poll.

Bowdoin Edges Men's Swimming & Diving (5-5)

The Trinity College men's swimming and diving team lost a close decision in its final regular season dual meet, 136-123, against NESCAC rival Bowdoin College on Feb. 12. The men finish the regular season at 5-5 while the women ended at 3-7 last week.

Sophomore Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, CT) won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.04) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.98) against Bowdoin. Senior co-captain Ryan Young (Anchorage, AK) took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:16.62 and senior Mike Gorman (Larchmont, NY) won the 100-yard backstroke at 57.45 seconds.

Nine women and 12 men have qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Championships. Senior co-captain Carrie Rorer (Villanova, PA) and junior Cory Bernard (Seymour, CT) have qualified in nine events, and senior co-captain Emily Polito (Joliet, IL) has qualified in five events. Other qualifiers for the Bantam women include, sophomores Lydia Barrett (Haverhill, MA) and Katie Lafleur (Belchertown, MA), and freshmen Karen Huebner (Burlington, MA), Laura Centofanti (Hanson, MA), Kathryn O'Donoghue (Slingerlands, NY), and Hillary Roberts (Orange, CT).

Senior co-captain Ryan Young (Anchorage, AK) has qualified in a team-high 11 events for the men's squad, while fellow senior co-captain Andrew Lovig (Bethany, CT) has qualified in seven events, and sophomore Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, CT) has qualified in six. Other men's qualifiers include: seniors Matt Ruggles (Cherry Hill, NJ) and Mike Gorman (Larchmont, NY), juniors Nathaniel Folkemer (Gibson Island, MD), Chris Nicholas (Seekonk, MA), sophomores Alex Blanchard (Warwick, RI) and Eric Biegeleisen (Falmouth, MA), and freshmen Coley Dale (Bloomfield, CT), Reese Lee (Wayne, PA), and Carrie Rorer's younger brother, Chris Rorer (Villanova, PA).

The Bantam women's team will compete in the NCAA Division III New England Championships at Bowdoin on Feb. 18-20.

Men's Squash (14-0) Wins Three Upstate

The Trinity College men's squash team defeated Hobart College, the University of Rochester, and the University of Western Ontario, all by 9-0 scores, at Hobart on Feb. 11 and 12. Trinity's match at Cornell University, originally scheduled for Feb. 12, was rescheduled for Feb. 24. The Bantams, who have won 31 consecutive matches dating back to the 1998 National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets' Association (NISRA) Team Championship, are ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Trinity played the same nine starters in all three matches and each posted 3-0 wins all three times. Senior Marcus Cowie (Norfolk, England) led the way with three easy victories at No. 1. Trinity has won 124 out of 126 individual matches this season.

The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante, will visit third-ranked and undefeated Princeton University on Feb. 19. The victor will capture the Inetrcollegiate Squash Association (ISA) regular season title, won for the first time by Trinity in 1999. The winner will likely be seeded first at the National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association (NISRA) Team Championships on Feb. 25-27 at Yale.

Women's Squash's (13-1) Blanks Amherst

The Trinity College women's squash easily defeated Amherst College, 9-0, on Feb. 10. The Bantams, who are ranked fourth in the nation, have won five straight matches.

Senior co-captain Gail Davie (Cheshire, England) won a 3-0 decision against Amherst as did all eight other Bantam starters.

Trinity's 13 wins sets a new College record for regular season wins with one match remaining, Feb. 16 at third-ranked Princeton University. Head Coach Wendy Bartlett needs just two more wins to to reach the 150-win mark. Bartlett has compiled a 148-53 record in 15-plus seasons as head women's squash coach.
