Men's Basketball (9-3) Loses Pair on the Road
The mens basketball team lost to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rivals Bates College, 85-80 and Tufts University, 86-78, on Jan. 28 and 29. The Bantams had won nine consecutive games prior to the weekend.
Junior guard Scott Wallach (Scarsdale, NY) paced Trinity against Bates with 20 points and senior co-captain forward Rory Neal (Springfield, MA) had 18 points and nine rebounds. Neal totaled 18 points and 12 rebounds against Tufts, while Wallach and sophomore forward Colin Tabb (Somers, CT) added 16 points each.
Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, continues to lead the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .482 and is third in three-point percentage at .391. Neal is the league's most accurate shooter with a .646 field goal percentage (82 of 127), its top rebounder at 10.9 per game, and fifth in scoring at 16.3 points per game. Wallach is third in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .512 and is seventh in scoring at 15.8 ppg.
Trinity is currently rated among the top teams in New England and the nation. Trinity is ranked 40th in the d3hoops.com national poll, 26th in the Columbus Multimedia TER Division III National Ratings, fourth in the TER Division III Northeast Ratings, and an honorable mention selection in the NCAA Division III Northeast Poll.

Women's Squash's (9-1) Thompson Wins Constable Tourney
The Trinity College women's squash defeated Wesleyan, 9-0, on Jan., 26 and competed at the Constable Tournament and Princeton Championships on Jan. 28-30. Junior All-American Janine Thompson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) won the Constable Tourney, winning four matches. Thompson was seeded fourth, but upset No. 1 Julia Beaver, of Princeton, in the semifinals and No. 3 Laura Keating, of Yale, in the finals. Thompson's semifinal victory was Beaver's first loss in her three-year intercollegiate career.
Senior co-captain Randy DePree (Lake Forest, IL) captured the 4.0 level Princeton Championship consolation tourney with five victories. DePree is 11-2 this season and has a College record 52 career wins. Her career mark is 53-21 (,716).
Trinity, ranked fourth in the nation, hosts No. 10 Brown University on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 5 p. m., No. 2 Harvard on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 12 noon, and No. 9 Williams College on Sun., Feb. 6 at 11 a. m.
Mens Ice Hockey (7-10, 4-7) Suffers Rare Loss at Wesleyan
The Trinity College men's ice hockey team defeated NESCAC rival Connecticut College for the second time this season, 5-1, on Friday, Jan. 28, but lost its first game against league opponent Wesleyan University since Dec. 2, 1983, 6-4, in Middletown, CT on Saturday, Jan. 29. Trinity, which had a 23-game unbeaten streak against Wesleyan, is currently in eighth place in the nine-team NESCAC at 4-7.
Junior forward Greg Bridgman (Hanover, NH) and sophomore forward Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, MI) scored twice each against Connecticut College, while sophomore forward Mark Colwell (Canton, MA) notched three assists.
Against Wesleyan, senior forward Mikko Auvinen (Heinola, Finland) had two goals and one assists, and junior forward Denis Petrov (Kemerokaya, Russia) tallied three assists for the Bantams. Sophomore goaltender Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, OH) made 28 saves in the two games. Petrov, who also had an assist in the Connecticut College game, earned a spot on the NESCAC Honor Roll.
Trinity, coached by John Dunham, is third in the NESCAC in penalty killing with a .878 percentage and fourth in penalty minutes with 16.4 per game.
Womens Ice Hockey (3-8-1, 3-8-1) Beats Holy Cross
The Trinity College women's hockey team defeated non-conference foe Holy Cross, 3-1, on Saturday, Jan. 29.
Freshman forward Katie Bowman (Summit, NJ) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Bantams. Senior tri-captain forward Amanda Lydon (Hampton Falls, NH) and sophomore forward Eliza Nordeman (New York, NY) also scored for Trinity. Sophomore goaltender Eleanore Maletta (Greenwich, CT) made 29 saves.
Trinity, coached by Joe Snecinski, visits third-ranked Colgate University on Sun., Feb. 6 at 1:00.
Indoor Track & Field Competes at Wesleyan
The Trinity College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Wesleyan Invitational on Friday, Jan. 28. The women came in second out of 14 teams, while the men finished fourth out of 11.
Junior co-captain Marisa Eddy (Los Angeles, CA) won her second consecutive 1,500-meter race with a time of 4:54.20, and fellow junior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, CT) took first place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet-4 inches.
Junior co-captain Todd Markelz (Homer, AK) finished second in the 3,000-meter run for the men with a season-best time of 8:54.91. Freshman shot-putter Josh Griffis (Templeton, MA) also placed second with a career-best toss of 13.58 meters.
Swimming & Diving Sweeps Wheaton
The Trinity College men's and women's swimming and diving teams both defeated Wheaton College on Saturday, Jan. 29. The men won a 137-77 decision and the women won, 167-111. The men's record improves to 4-3 and the women's team is now 3-5.
Senior co-captain Carrie Rorer (Villanova, PA) won three individual events against Wheaton, incuding the 50-yard (:32.82) and 200-yard (2:42.99) breaststrokes, and the 100-yard freestyle (:57.01). Fellow senior co-captain Emily Polito (Joliet, IL), and junior Cory Bernard (Seymour, CT) won the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.88) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:26.630).
Freshman Coley Dale (Bloomfield, CT) paced the men's squad with first-place finishes in the 50-yard (:22.78) and the 500-yard (5:37.76) freestyle.
Several Bantams have qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Championships with two men's meets and one women's meet remaining in the regular season. In all, nine women and 11 men have combined New Englands.
Rorer has qualified in a team-high six events, and Polito and Bernard have qualified in five events each. Other qualifiers for the Bantam women include, sophomores Lydia Barrett (Haverhill, MA) and Katie Lafleur (Belchertown, MA), and freshmen Karen Huebner (Burlington, MA), Laura Centofanti (Hanson, MA), Kathryn O'Donoghue (Slingerlands, NY), and Hillary Roberts (Orange, CT).
Senior co-captain Andrew Lovig (Bethany, CT) has qualified in a team-high seven events for the men's squad, while fellow senior co-captain Ryan Young (Anchorage, AK) and sophomore Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, CT) have qualified in six events apiece. Other men's qualifiers include seniors Matt Ruggles (Cherry Hill, NJ) and Mike Gorman (Larchmont, NY), junior Chris Nicholas (Seekonk, MA), sophomores Alex Blanchard (Warwick, RI) and Eric Biegeleisen (Falmouth, MA), and freshmen Dale, Reese Lee (Wayne, PA), and Carrie's younger brother Chris Rorer (Villanova, PA).
MacColl Leads Women's Basketball (13-3) to Three Wins
The Trinity College womens basketball team won three games last week, including a 69-64 win at Westfield State on Tuesday, Jan. 26, a 72-63 win against NESCAC rival Bates on Friday, Jan. 28, and a 65-48 win over NESCAC foe Tufts University on Saturday, Jan. 29.
Senior forward Gretchen MacColl (Portland, OR) made 10 of 11 shots from the field for 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Westfield, which was ranked 10th in New England. Junior guard Jackie Siscone (Hammonton, NJ) added 11 points and five assists.
Against Bates, which was ranked third in New England, Trinity shot 56 percent from the field as a team. Siscone played her best game as a Bantam after transferring to Trinity from Division I Colgate, with 20 points. Siscone made six of nine shots from three-point range. Freshman center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, MA) was six of eight from the field for a career-high 17 points and pulled down a career-best 15 boards off the bench. MacColl added 15 points and 11 rebounds and senior co-captain guard Megan Shutte (Allentown, PA) dished out nine assists.
MacColl led the way against Tufts with 16 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and three blocked shots, giving her three consecutive double-doubles. Sophomore guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, MA) scored 15 points with five rebounds and four assists, while McCloskey added 12 points and eight boards.
MacColl was named the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week, averaging 18.0 points andc 11.3 rebounds. MacColl, who earned the league Player of the Week award last week, shot 70 percent from the floor. MacColl also earned the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Co-Player of the Week for her strong performance.
Trinity, coached by Maureen Pine, leads the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .432, is fifth in three-point percentage at .312, and fifth in free throw percentage at .654. MacColl is the league's most accurate shooter with a .623 field goal percentage (94 of 151), third in rebounding at 9.4 per game, fifth in scoring at 15.3 points per game, and sixth in free throw percentage at .709 (61 of 86). Siscone is third in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .353 (36 of 102).
Trinity, which has won four in a row, is currently rated among the top teams in New England. The Bantams are ranked second in the NEWBA Division III poll, fifth in the Columbus Multimedia TER Division III Northeast Ratings, and fourth in the NCAA Division III Northeast Poll.

Wrestling (10-7) Wins two of Five Matches
The Trinity College wrestling team won, 29-15, at Roger Williams University on Wednesday, Jan. 26 and split with the United States Merchant Marine Academy and New York Maritime in a tri-match at King's Point, NY on Jan. 29.
Freshman 125-pounder Anthony Marcucio (Derby, CT) pinned his opponent against Roger Williams, and classmate Mark Foresi (West Springfield, MA) posted a decisive 18-2 triumph at 141 pounds.
In a 39-18 win over New York Maritime, junior Ted Govola (Rocky Hill, CT) pinned his opponent in 1:48. Sophomore Noah Cox (Pittsburgh, PA) and Riad deFreitas (Silver Spring, MD) also won easy matches. Cox won, 15-2, at 157 pounds and deFreitas won, 15-0, at 149 pounds. Govola and Foresi also posted victories against King's Point, while undefeated sophomore 133-pounder Michael Marcucio (Derby, CT) won his 10th straight match with a pin at 2:12.
Men's Squash (9-0) Win Streak up to 26
The Trinity College men's squash team defeated Amherst College on Jan. 27, and Williams College on Jan. 29. Both matches were easy 9-0 victories for the Bantams. The Bantams, who have won 26 consecutive matches dating back to the 1998 National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets' Association (NISRA) Team Championship, are ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Senior co-captain Preston Quick (Lakewood, CO) won a pair of matches to increase his team-high total to eight. Quick defeated All-American David McNeeley, 3-2, at the No. 1 position against Amherst. Freshmen Jonathan Smith (Leeds, England) and Nickolas Kyme (Pembroke, Bermuda) also won matches against both Amherst and Williams. The rookie duo is a combined 12-0 this season.
The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante, will host 10th-ranked Brown University on Tuesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.and second-ranked Harvard University on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. The Harvard match is a rematch of the 1998-99 NISRA finals.
