The mens basketball team defeated NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 89-83, on Tuesday, Jan. 18, and downed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 75-61, on Saturday, Jan. 22. The Bantams have won nine consecutive games following a season-opening loss at Eastern Connecticut State University in November.
Junior center Julian Bah (Concord, MA), a transfer from Boston College, and freshman forward Ryan Uszenski (Metuchen, NJ) have provided Trinity with some valuable minutes off the bench. Bah pulled down nine rebounds against Connecticut College in 17 minutes and Uszenski scored 11 points, sinking four of five field goals, against RPI. Bah is second on the team in rebounding with 4.3 per game. Uszenski is averaging 6.2 points and 2.7 rebounds, shooting 69.2 percent (27 of 39) from the field.
Junior guard Mike Keohane (Belmont, MA) has emerged as a solid starter at the point. He is averaging 9.3 points and 3.7 assists per game, hitting 40.5 percent of his three-point attempts. The Bantams have used a three-guard rotation with Keohane, junior Scott Wallach (Scarsdale, NY), and junior co-captain Michael LaBella (Middletown, CT). Wallach is second on the team in scoring at 15.4 ppg and is shooting 50.0 percent from both the floor (63 of 126) and from three-point range (17 of 34). LaBella is fifth in scoring at 7.4 ppg, third in assists with 37, and has hit 44.1 of his three-point attempts (15 of 34).
Senior co-captain forward Rory Neal (Springfield, MA) was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Co-Player of the Week for the second time this season. Neal averaged 20.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocked shots while shooting 69 percent from the field.
Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, continues to lead the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .492 and is second in three-point percentage at .399. Neal is the league's most accurate shooter with a .657 field goal percentage (71 of 108), its top rebounder at 11.0 per game, and sixth in scoring at 16.7 points per game. Wallach is fourth in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage and is seventh in scoring, while junior co-captain guard Michael LaBella (Middletown, CT) is sixth in three-point percentage.
Trinity is currently rated among the top teams in New England and the nation. Trinity is ranked 19th in the d3hoops.com national poll, tied for 14th in the Columbus Multimedia TER Division III National Ratings, tied for first in the TER Division III Northeast Ratings, and tied for second in the NCAA Division III Northeast Poll.

Women's Squash (8-1) Has Strong Start
The Trinity College women's squash is off to a nice start with eight wins in its first nine matches. The Bantams defeated seven opponenets in a nine-day span, including wins over Ivy League opponents, Cornell University, Yale University, and Dartmouth College. The Bantams, whose only loss came at the hands of the University of Pennsylvania, 8-1, on Sunday, Jan. 23, also beat Franklin & Marshall College, Bowdoin College, and Vassar College. Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett, is currently ranked No. 4 in the nation. Penn was ranked No. 1
Several Bantams have played well, led by sophomore Mollie Anderson (Buffalo, NY), who has not lost a match in nine tries. Senior co-captains Randy DePree (Lake Forest, IL) and Gail Davie (Cheshire, England), sophomore Samantha Lewins (Bronley, Zimbabwe) and the freshman trio of Nicola Clark (Brighton, England), Clare Austin (Banbury, England), and Amy Brown (West Hartford, CT) all have just one loss, combining for a 43-6 record.
Junior Janine Thompson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) has returned from a semester studying abroad in Australia and is 5-2 at the No. 1 spot. Thompson and Davie were both All-Americans last season.
Mens Ice Hockey (6-9, 3-6) Has Tough Weekend
The Trinity College men's ice hockey team defeated Framingham State, 7-4, in a non-conference game on Monday, Jan. 17, but lost home games in the league on Jan. 21 and 22 to nationally ranked opponents Norwich University and Middlebury College. The losses drops Trinity to eighth place in the nine-team NESCAC.
Senior defenseman John O'Leary (Reading, MA) notched two goals and one assist against Framingham. Senior forward Wayne Sellers (Buffalo, NY) scored two goals, including the gamewinner to break a 3-3 tie in the third period. Senior forward Scott Rickard (Manchester, CT) had two assists and sophomore forward Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, MI) had one goal and one assist
Trinity lost, 4-1, against Norwich and, 5-2, against Middlebury. Sophomore goaltender Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, OH) was oustanding for 120 minutes, stopping 35 shots against Norwich and 44 against Middlebury. Fenwick assisted on two goals in each game.
Trinity, coached by John Dunham, is currently fourth in the NESCAC in penalty minutes with 17.5 per game and third in penalty killing with an 88.0 percentage.
Trinity hosts two nationally ranked opponents this weekend. The Bantams will entertain No. 4 Norwich University on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:35 and No. 8 Middlebury College on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 4:30 p.m.
Womens Ice Hockey (2-8-1, 2-8-1) Loses Pair
The Trinity College women's hockey team, winless in its last seven games, lost to Sacred Heart University, 12-0, and Connecticut College, 8-0, on Jan. 22 and 23. The Bantams, coached by Joe Snecinski, dropped to 14th place in the 18-team ECAC.
Freshman forward Caroline Cummings (Bloomfield Hills, MI) scored Trinity's only goal of the weekend. Sophomore goaltender Eleanore Maletta (Greenwich, CT) totaled 64 saves in the two games.
Indoor Track & Field Does Well at Brandeis
The Trinity College men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Brandeis Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 22. The women came in fourth out of 13 teams, while the men finished sixth out of 15.
Junior co-captain Marisa Eddy (Los Angeles, CA) won the 1,500-meters and the 1,000-meters. Eddy ran a 4:53.83 in the 1,500 and 3:10.46 in the 1,000, both of which were season-bests for her and the team. Fellow junior co-captain Amanda Rival (Berlin, CT) took first place in the 55-meter high hurdles with a time of 8.89 seconds.
Freshman Ryan Bak (Suffield, CT) won the 1,500 meters for the men with a personal-best and team season-high best of 3:59.70.
Swimming & Diving Falls Short in NESCAC Meets
The Trinity College men's and women's swimming and diving teams both lost to Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Jan. 20,and Tufts University on Sunday, Jan. 23. The women dropped a 135-95 decision against Wesleyan and a 163.5-134.5 meet at Tufts to fall to 2-5 for the season. The Bantam men lost, 108-87, against Wesleyan and 149-117 at Tufts. The men are now 3-3.
Senior co-captain Carrie Rorer (Villanova, PA) won three individual events against Tufts, swam a leg of the first-place 400-freestyle relay team against Wesleyan, and swam a leg of the first-place 200-medley relay team against Tufts. Rorer won the 100 (1:10.69) and 200 (2:33.60) breaststrokes, and the 100 butterfly (1:04.68). Fellow senior co-captain Emily Polito (Joliet, IL) was also a member of the 4000-free relay team against Wesleyan, and won both the 1000 (11:12.41) and the 200 (2:02.63) freestyle events in the meet. Polito won the 500 freestyle (5:30.48) against Tufts. Sophomore diver Jessica Harmon (Selma, AL) won the one-meter dive in both meets and the three-meter dive against Tufts.
Senior Matt Ruggles (Cherry Hill, NJ) paced the men's squad with first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle in both meets. Ruggles finished in 22.87 seconds against Wesleyan and 23.04 against Tufts. Bantam senior co-captain Ryan Young (Anchorage, AK) won the 500 free (5:07.70) against Tufts and swam a leg of the first-place 200-freestyle relay squad.
Women's Basketball (10-3) Has Downs and Ups
The Trinity College womens basketball team lost its first game to Connecticut College, 66-64, since 1993, on Tuesday, Jan. 18, but rallied to defeat nationally-ranked Western Connecticut State University, 63-52, in overtime on Thursday, Jan. 20.
Senior forward Gretchen MacColl (Portland, OR) kept the Bantams close against Connecticut College, collecting 28 points and seven boards. MacColl made 10 of 15 shots from the field and all eight of her free throw attempts. Sophomore guard Bridget Dullea (Longmeadow, MA) added 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals.
Against Western Connecticut, Trinity outscored the Colonials, 17-6 in the extra period. Dullea scored 16 points with seven rebounds and four steals, and was eight of eight from the foul line. Junior guard Jackie Siscone (Hammonton, NJ) played her best game of the season with 14 points and senior co-captain forward Caitlin Luz (Woburn, MA) added nine points and 18 rebounds.
MacColl was named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Week, averaging 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocked shots. MacColl shot 52 percent from the floor. Both MacColl and Dullea were named to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Honor roll for their strong performances last week. The duo combined for 71 points and 30 rebounds, and missed just two of 29 foul shots.
Trinity, coached by Maureen Pine, leads the NESCAC in field goal percentage at .424, is fifth in three-point percentage at .315, and fifth in free throw percentage at .667. MacColl is the league's most accurate shooter with a .603 field goal percentage (73 of 121), fourth in rebounding at 9.0 per game, fifth in scoring at 15.0 points per game, and fifth in free throw percentage at .721 (49 of 68). Siscone is fifth in the NESCAC in three-point field goal percentage at .346 (27 of 78), while Dullea is 10th in scoring at 12.4 points per game.
Trinity is currently rated among the top teams in New England. The Bantams are ranked seventh in the NEWBA Division III poll, ninth in the Columbus Multimedia TER Division III Northeast Ratings, and sixth in the NCAA Division III Northeast Poll. Wrestling (8-6) Wins two of Five Matches
The Trinity College wrestling team lost, 22-18, at Division I Sacred Heart University on Thursday, Jan. 20 and finished 10th of 15 teams at the New England Duals Championships on Sunday, Jan. 23. The Bantams were upset, 21-16, against Roger Williams in the first round of the Duals Championships, which were played at Springfield College, before rallying to beat MIT, 39-12, and Western New England College, 35-15, in the consolation rounds. Plymouth State defeated the undermanned Bantams, 33-15, in the 10th-place match as Trinity was forced to take four forfeits.
Senior heavyweight Peter Marino (Winchester, MA) and junior 133-pounder Michael Marcucio (Derby, CT) both pinned their Sacred Heart opponents for Trinity. Marcucio went 2-0 at the Duals with wins against MIT and Plymouth State, while Marino went 3-1. Marino's only loss was a 2-1 decision against his Roger Williams opponent, giving him a 4-1 record for the week. Junior Ted Govola (Rocky Hill, CT) won all three of his matches at the Duals.
Trinity has four wrestlers rated in the top six in their weight class. Senior captain Steve Mulvihill (Melrose, MA) is second at 197 pounds, Marcucio is second at 133 pounds, freshman Mark Foresi (West Springfield, MA) is third at 141 pounds, and freshman Anthony Marcucio (Derby, CT), Michael's younger brother, is sixth at 125 pounds.
Trinity is currently ranked 10th in the New England Division III Coaches' Poll. The Bantams, coached by Sebby Amato, will visit seventh-ranked Roger Williams University on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
Men's Squash (7-0) Win Streak up to 24
The Trinity College men's squash team defeated fourth-ranked Yale University on Jan. 19, and eight-ranked Dartmouth College and Vassar College on Jan. 22. All three matches were easy 9-0 victories for the Bantams. The Bantams, who have won 24 consecutive matches dating back to the 1998 National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets' Association (NISRA) Team Championship, are ranked No. 1 in the nation.
The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante, will visit ninth-ranked Amherst College on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m., and will host fifth-ranked Williams College on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m.
