Hartford, Conn., Aug. 14 – Lou O’Brien Berl (West Hartford, Conn.) has been hired as the head women’s rowing coach at Trinity College. Berl comes to Trinity from the University of Virginia, where she served as an assistant coach from 1998 - 2001. She replaces Erica Schwab who has moved on to be an assistant coach at Oregon State University. The Trinity varsity eight had a 7-6 record in 2001-02 and finished 10th in the New England Rowing Championships. |

Lou O'Brien Berl |
Berl coached the novice women and the varsity four at Virginia in 1999, leading them to silver medals in the Eastern Sprints and the NCAA Championships, respectively. In 2000, Berl’s undefeated varsity four won the gold medal at the Eastern Sprints, while the second varsity four brought home the silver medal. The varsity four finished third in the NCAA Championships.
In addition to coaching with the 1997 U. S. Women’s Development Camp, Berl was the novice women’s rowing coach at Ohio State University in 1997-98 and the head women’s crew coach at the Noble & Greenough School from 1994 -1997. At Ohio State, she led the first novice eight to silver medals and the second novice eight to gold medals at both the Midwest Championships and the Central Region Sprints. Her Noble & Greenough teams won national titles in 1996 and 1997 with undefeated records, and shattered the national championship course record by 12 seconds.
A 1989 graduate of Trinity with a bachelor’s degree in history, Berl also coached the Bantam women’s novice squad in 1987-88. She was captain and most valuable player of the Trinity women’s rowing team during her two years on the Bantam varsity eight, after two years at the University of Penn.
