Send Trio to Nationals

HARTFORD, Conn., May 17 -- The Trinity College men’s and women’s tennis teams, each of which qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships as a team, will send three individuals to the NCAA Division III Individual Championships on May 18-20. The men’s tournament will take place at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and the women’s tourney will be held at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Senior co-captain Rostyslav Orach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and freshman Richard Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario) were each selected to represent the Trinity men’s squad in singles and were selected as a team in doubles. Under the direction of Head Coach Paul Assaiante, the Bantams posted a 14-5 record and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship for the third consecutive season. Trinity won, 5-1, against Bates in the first round, but lost, 5-2, against MIT in the second round.

Freshman Diana Goldman (Braintree, Mass.) was selected to represent the Trinity women’s squad. Under Head Coach Wendy Bartlett, the Bantams posted a 9-5 record and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship for the second consecutive season. Trinity lost, 8-1, to Williams in the first round.

Orach is making his third consecutive trip to the national tournament, after losing in the first round the last two seasons. Orach, who has a 28-1 record this season and a College record 72-10 career mark, is the No. 2-ranked singles player in the nation. He finished fifth in the nation at the Rolex/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Small College National Championships this fall, and won his second No. 1 singles title in three years at the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships this spring. Orach is a three-time All-NESCAC selection, a four-time Rolex/ITA All-American selection, and the 2000-01 NESCAC Player of the Year.

Lawrence has a 22-3 record this season and is the No. 17-ranked singles player in the nation. He lost to Orach in the Rolex/ITA Small College Regional Championship finals this fall. He was named to the All-NESCAC and Rolex /ITA All-American teams, as well as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year this season.

In doubles, Orach returns to the National Championships with his second partner, after advancing to the second round with Artem Gonopolskiy ’99 as a sophomore. Orach/Lawrence, which has 24-3 record this season, is the No. 2-ranked doubles tandem in the nation. They advanced to the finals of the Rolex/ITA Small College National Championships this fall.

Goldman has a 16-7 record this season and is the No. 9-ranked singles player in the East region. She earned second team All-NESCAC and NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors this season.
