Bak and Klein Named as Trinity's Top
Junior Scholar Athletes for 2001-02

Hartford, Conn., May 29 - Trinity men’s cross country and track and field junior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) and women’s cross country and track and field junior Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.) were selected as the recipients of the 2001-2002 Bob Harron Award and Board of Fellows Award, respectively, as the College’s Outstanding Junior Scholar Athletes. The Bob Harron Award is presented annually to the College’s top junior male scholar athlete and the Board of Fellows Award is presented each year to the College’s top female scholar athlete.

The Trinity men’s cross country team, coached by George Suitor (10th season) finished sixth at the New England Division III Championships this fall. The women’s team, also coached by Suitor, finished fifth at the New England Division III this fall.

The Trinity men’s track and field team finished 11th at the New England Division III Indoor Championships, 13th at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships, and 14th at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships this season. The women’s team, also coached by Suitor, finished 14th at the New England Division III Indoor Championships and 13th at the New England Division III Outdoor Championships this season. All four track and field teams are coached by Suitor.

Bak finished 16th overall with a College-record time of 24:39 at the NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships this fall to earn All-American honors. He was second overall at the 2001 New England Championships to earn All-New England recognition, and was an All-NESCAC (First Team) selection the last two seasons, as well as the 2001 NESCAC Most Outstanding Men’s Cross Country Performer.

An All-American, All-New England Division III and Open (New England Division III Runner of the Year for 2001-02), All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), and All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) performer in track, Bak won the 1,500-meter title and finished seventh in the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III Nationals to end the 2001-02 indoor campaign. In the 2002 outdoor campaign, Bak won the 1,500-meter title at the NESCAC Championships and the 800-meter title at the New England Division III Championships, and has qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 1,500 meters. He holds Trinity records in the 800 meters (1:53.22), 1,000 meters (2:27.87), 1,500 meters (3:48.99), 3,000 meters (8:19.78), and 5,000 meters (14:35.37). A NESCAC All-Academic selection in the fall seasons of 2000 and 2001 and the 2001-02 winter season, Bak is a graduate of Suffield High School, and maintains a 3.63 GPA as an economics and political science major at Trinity.

Klein, an All-New England selection in the 4x400-meter relays in her sophomore winter seasons and the 4x800-meter relays this spring, had the team’s best time in the 500-meter (1:26.91) and a personal-best time in the 800-meter run (2:21.51) during the 2001-02 indoor seasons season. She also ran a personal best time of 19:10 in cross country this fall.

Klein was an NESCAC All-Academic selection for the fall seasons in 2000 and 2001 in cross country, the winter 2001-02 indoor track season, and the spring 2001 outdoor track season. A graduate of Mount Mansfield High School, Klein and maintains a 3.61 GPA as an engineering major at Trinity.
