| Markelz Named Trinity Senior Male Scholar Athlete of the Year |
Hartford, Conn., May 2 -Men’s cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field co-captain Todd Markelz (Homer, Alaska) was named the recipient of the Trinity College 2000-01 ECAC Award as the College’s top senior male scholar athlete.
Markelz also received a Blanket Award for earning at least nine varsity letters in his Trinity athletic career. He earned four each in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track for a total of 12 letters.
Markelz is a two-time All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and a two-time All-New England cross country runner, and an All-American harrier in the fall of 2000. He posted a personal and team season-high time of 25:09 at the New England Open Championships this fall.
Markelz is also a 2000-01 All-New England and All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) distance runner in indoor track and field this winter and an All-NESCAC selection in the spring of 2000. He posted a personal and team season-high time of 14:57.93 in the 5,000-meter run and a College-record time of 8:43.28 in the 3,000-meter run.
The 2000 Bantam men’s cross country team, coached by George Suitor, finished third at the NESCAC Championships, fourth at the NCAA Division III New England Division III Regional Championships, and 14th at the NCAA Division III National Championships in its first-ever appearance as a team. Markelz finished 28th at the National Championships with a time of 25:41.5 to earn All-American honors.
The 2000-01 Trinity men’s indoor track and field team finished 12th out of 22 teams at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championships. The 2001 Bantam men’s outdoor track and field squad finished sixth out of 11 teams at the NESCAC Championships this past weekend. Both track teams are also coached by Suitor.
Markelz is also a five-time NESCAC All-Academic selection, currently holding a 3.7 grade-point average as a computer science major. A graduate of Homer High School, he is the son of William and Marranne Markelz.
