Player Luz as Head Softball Coach

Trinity College

Hartford, Conn., May 14 - Caitlin Luz (Woburn, Mass.) has been hired as the head softball coach at Trinity College. She will take over a team that posted a 7-22 overall record in 2002 and finished third in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division with a 3-5 league mark.

Most recently, Luz has served as an assistant softball, women’s basketball, and volleyball coach at Trinity for the past two seasons. In addition, Luz was a graduate assistant within the Trinity athletic department.

Luz remained at Trinity as a coach the past two seasons, following fine softball and basketball careers as a member of the Bantam teams. Luz recovered from knee trouble in her freshman and sophomore seasons to spend two years as the starting catcher on the Trinity softball squad, and lettered four years for the women’s basketball team.

An All-NESCAC selection in 1999, Luz batted .302 in 62 games at Trinity, with 20 runs, 52 hits, 36 RBI, 13 doubles, and four home runs in her two seasons. She also averaged 5.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for her basketball career, and served as captain for the Bantam team that won the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship title in 1999-00.

“In addition to being a great athlete here at Trinity, Luz has shown she can recruit top players in her role as an assistant coach for two seasons,” says Trinity Athletic Director Richard Hazelton. “We, as well as the players on the team, are excited about our choice.”

Luz graduated from Trinity in 2000 with a bachelor-of-arts degree in education and women’s studies, and is currently enrolled in the College’s master’s program in American Studies. She will also serve as an assistant volleyball coach and a physical education instructor in the Trinity athletic department.
