Trinity Frosh Rises to Top
of National Men's Squash Rankings

Hartford, Conn., Jan. 4 – Trinity College freshman Bernardo Samper (Bogota, Colombia) was voted as the No. 1 intercollegiate men’s squash player in the nation in the latest National Intercollegiate Squash Racquets Association (NISRA) individual rankings. Samper, who defeated last year’s No. 1 and this season’s pre-season No. 1 David Yik, of Princeton, in the United States Squash Racquets Association (USSRA) Five Man Championships in December, has yet to play his first dual match as a collegian.

Trinity, coached by Paul Assaiante, has been the No. 1 team in the nation all season. The Bantams, who begin their intercollegiate dual match season against No. 9 Denison on Jan. 11, captured their second straight USSRA Five Man Championship title behind the play of Samper.

Six other Trinity players are ranked among the top 20 in the nation. Sophomore Michael Ferriera (Stamford, England) is No. 3, junior Johnathan Smith (Leeds, England) is No. 4, senior co-captain Lefike Ragontse (Gaborone, Botswana) is No. 7, junior Nickolas Kyme (Pembroke, Bermuda) is No. 8, senior Rohan Bhappu (Bombay, India) is No. 17, and sophomore Nadeem Osman (Jwaneng, Botswana) is No. 20. Ragontse recently defeated No. 5 Peter Karlen, of Harvard, in the University Club College Tournament finals in New York City. Osman and Bantam sophomore Peter Malloy (Boston, Mass.) reached the semi-finals of the 48-man tourney.
