| Trinity Men's Lax Visits Connecticut College in NESCAC Quarters |
Hartford, Conn., April 30 -- The Trinity College men’s lacrosse team, which finished the 2000-01 regular season as the fifth-place team in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), will visit fourth-place Connecticut College on Tuesday, May 1 in the quarterfinal round of the inaugural NESCAC Championship Tournament.
The Bantams, coached by Mike Darr, posted a 6-7 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the NESCAC and are the No. 5 seed in the Championship Tournament. This season is the first in which the NESCAC will use a post-season league tournament to determine its automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. The top seven teams in the league earned a bid to the NESCAC Championship tourney. No. 1 Middlebury, which was 8-0 in the league, received a bye to the semifinal round after winning a coin toss between them and fellow-undefeated Wesleyan. No. 2 Wesleyan will host No. 7 Amherst, and No. 3 Bowdoin will host No. 6 Tufts in other quarterfinal games also on Tuesday, May 1. The semifinals and finals will be played on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 at Middlebury.
Senior tri-captain midfielder Mark Tassie (Hopewell, N.J.) leads the Bantams in scoring with 26 goals and seven assists for 33 points. Tassie is followed by fellow senior Rob Morse (Winchester, Mass), an attackman, with 18 goals and a team-high 12 assists for 30 points. Sophomore attackman Ravi Pillay (Potomac, Md.) has 17 goals and five assists for 22 pointsand junior attackman/midfielder Sean Rohan (South Hadley, Mass.) has 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points.
Junior goalkeeper Eric Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) has 157 saves, a 55.9% save percentage, and a 10.41 GAA, while starting all 13 games in the cage. The Bantam defense , including junior tri-captain Matt Gjerulff (Rockville, Md.) and freshmen Tony Alexandre (Bernardsville, N.J.), Peter Kennedy (Darien, Conn.) and Dan Bernardi (Great Falls, Va.) have combined to hold Trinity opponents to 27.5 shots per game.
Connecticut College is 9-4 and 6-3 in the NESCAC, including a 10-8 win over the Bantams on March 28 in New London. Senior attackman Rob Travieso (Baltimore, Md.) leads the Camels in scoring with 21 goals and 19 assists for 40 points, while junior backstop Tyler Volpe (Andover, Mass.) has 151 saves, a 58.3% save percentage, and an 8.32 GAA in goal. Connecticut College, coached by Fran Shields, ended the season with a seven-game winning streak.
