| Trinity Baseball Players Earn Post-Season Accolades |
Hartford, Conn., May 23 - Trinity College junior Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) was named to both the 2000-01 All-New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Baseball First Team and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III All-New England Second Team. Bantam senior co-captain right-hander Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) also earned All-NESCAC First Team honors, while junior Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.) was named to the All-NESCAC Second Team and the NEIBA All-New England Second team.
Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, posted a best-ever 25-10 overall record and a 9-3 league mark, which was second-best in the conference’s East Division. The Bantams qualified for the first-ever NESCAC Championship Tournament.
Freimuth, who started all 35 games at shortstop for the Bantams, was Trinity’s leading hitter with a .387 batting average (team-high 53-for-137). He also had team-highs of seven home runs and 93 total bases (tied College record), as well as 36 runs (second on team), 15 doubles (second on team), and 39 RBI (second on team). Freimuth, who is already the College’s all-time leader in doubles (41) and RBI (114), and second all-time in hits (155) and total bases (247), was a first team All-NESCAC player and a second team NEIBA All-New England player last spring and a second team All-NESCAC selection in 1999.
Bayliss finished this season with a 6-4 record and two saves in 12 appearances (10 starts) with a team-high 72 strikeouts, 60 hits allowed, and a team-best 2.45 ERA in 73.3 innings pitched. He also led the Bantams with six complete games and tossed the team’s only shutout.
Bayliss finishes his Trinity career as the College’s all-time leader in wins (27-10 career record and 2.41 career ERA) and shutouts (5), second all-time in starts (36) and strikeouts (263), and fourth all-time in appearances (41), innings pitched (261.0), and winning percentage (.730). Bayliss was a second team All-NESCAC pitcher last spring, a first team All-NESCAC selection and NESCAC Pitcher of the Year in 1999, and NESCAC Rookie of the Year in 1998. He was a first team NEIBA All-New England player in 1999 and a second team NEIBA All-New England pick in 1998.
Spanos, who started all 35 games, mostly at second base, for the Bantams, was Trinity’s second-leading hitter with a .371 batting average (52-for-140). He also had a College-record 18 doubles, and team-highs of 40 runs, 41 RBI, and three triples. Also a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher, Spanos was 3-1 in four starts on the mound this spring with 18 strikeouts and a 3.46 ERA in 26.0 innings pitched. Spanos was a first team All-NEIBA All-New England second baseman last spring.
