Piantek Named NESCAC Player of the Week Again for Baseball (13-7, 7-2) The Trinity College baseball team won against NESCAC East rival Colby, 17-6, on April 12 and swept Colby the next day, 5/19-1/9. The Bantams lost to Eastern Connecticut, 6-5, on Apr. 15, but defeated NESCAC East rival Tufts, 6-1, on Apr. 18. Trinity split with Tufts the next day, 4/15-6/12. |

Sophomore Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) went 5-for-6 with five runs, a double, and two home runs in the first game against Colby, which was played in Maine due to heavy rain in Connecticut. Trinity scored in every inning but the second and pounded out 17 hits en route to the easy victory. Bantam senior Rob Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.) also belted a pair of home runs, while senior co-captain Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with one homer, and sophomore Rob O’Leary (Easton, Mass.) had two doubles. Junior starter Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) pitched seven innings for the win.
Junior Erik Shattenkirk (New Rochelle, N.Y.) hit two home runs in the sweep of Colby, while Piantek homered in both games, and sophomore righty Mark Tremblay (Hooksett, N.H.) pitched seven strong innings to earn the win on the mound in the first game. Freshman right-hander Kyle Cox (Hinsdale, Ill.) tossed five-plus innings in relief to win the nightcap.
Against Eastern Connecticut, which was ranked No. 1 in New England and in the nation entering the game, sophomore right-hander Chris Rodday (Concord, Mass.) pitched eight innings for the Bantams, keeping the Warriors hitters off-balance and allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts. Trinity rallied back from a 4-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, another in the fifth, and two more in the seventh. Natale had two doubles on the day, while senior co-captain Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) added two hits and three runs, and Piantek went 2-for-5 with three RBI.
Tidmarsh tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts in the first game against Tufts, which was ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 21 in the nation entering the game. Trinity scored three runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Piantek and a Jumbo error, while Tidmarsh kept Tufts scoreless until the fifth frame. Piantek belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. Piantek finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Natale added three hits in four at-bats with a double and an RBI.
Natale went 3-for-6 with three runs, one home run, and five RBI, including the game-winning RBI on a three-run double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning in Trinity’s win in the finale of the three game series with Tufts. Trinity lost leads of 4-0 and 6-1, and trailed by a count of 11-7 after six innings, but Natale cleared the bases and gave Trinity the lead at 13-11 with a double and Dolliver greeted the fourth Tufts pitcher of the eighth inning with his second home run of the game to put the Bantams up, 15-11. Senior closer Craig Tredenick (Cornwall, Prince Edward Island), struck out two batters in the seventh inning to earn his second save and end the game. Dolliver finished 3-for-5 with four RBI, while sophomore Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio) collected four hits for the Bantams, and freshman Greg Talpey (Westbrook, Conn.) earned his first career win in relief. Dorr was 2-for-4 at the plate in the loss to Tufts earlier in the day.
Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, is currently in first place in the NESCAC East with a 7-2 division record. Trinity leads the NESCAC in hitting and is eighth in the nation with a .363 batting average, has a league-high 38 home runs, and is second nationally in scoring with 10.7 runs per game. Piantek leads the NESCAC and the nation in hitting with a .574 batting average (39-for-68), hits with 39, RBI with 37 (2nd in nation at 1.85 per game), home runs with 9 (5th in nation at 0.45 per game), and total bases with 70. He is also second in the league in runs with 30. Dorr leads the conference in runs with 34, is fourth in home runs with six, and fifth in total bases with 54, while Natale leads the NESCAC in doubles with nine (9th in nation at 0.6 per game), is second in the league and 19th in the nation in hitting at .483 (29-60), and third in runs with 28. Dolliver is fifth in the league in batting average at .431 (31-72), and third in home runs with seven (20th in nation at 0.35 per game), RBI with 30 (19th in nation at 1.50 per game), and total bases with 60. Tidmarsh is third in the NESCAC in earned run average at 2.31 to go with his 5-0 record and is fourth in the league in strikeouts with 32. Piantek was named as the NESCAC Player of the Week for the second time, after pounding eight hits in his 14 at-bats with four runs, nine RBI, and five walks for a .684 on-base percentage. Natale was named to the NESCAC honor roll, after going 9-for-17 with eight runs, eight RBI, and two homers at Colby.
Trinity is currently ranked No. 4 in the New England College Baseball Coaches (NEIBA) Poll., No. 3 in the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) New England Rankings, and No. 29 in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball National Poll. Trinity will visit Amherst on Apr. 22 at 3:30 p.m., before hosting Brandeis, ranked No. 8 in the ABCA Regional Poll, in a doubleheader on Apr. 26 and Middlebury in a twinbill on Apr. 27.

Men’s Tennis Drops Three of Four (9-4)
The Trinity College men’s tennis team lost at Amherst, 4-3, indoors on Apr. 8 and blanked Connecticut College on the road, 7-0, on Apr. 14. The Bantams dropped a 4-3 decision at Tufts on Apr. 16 and a 5-2 match against Williams on Apr. 19 to close the regular season.
At Amherst, which was ranked No. 8 in the Northeast entering the match, freshmen Jon Hart (Bayshore, Trinidad) and Jimmie Ames (Sturbridge, Mass.) both won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Senior tri-captain Scott Levy (Waban, Mass.) lost just one game in a straight set victory at the No. 4 singles spot and teamed with Ames at Connecticut College. Ames, junior Csaba Godry (Budapest, Hungary) and freshman Daniel Merns (New York, N.Y.) also won singles matches in straight sets.
Junior tri-captain Richard Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario) and Hart won thrilling victories in three sets at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions against Williams, which was ranked No. 1 in the Northeast and the nation entering the match.
Hart leads Trinity with an 11-2 singles record, while Ames is 12-3 (team-high win total), Lawrence is 7-3, and Godry is 7-4. In doubles, Levy and Ames have combined for a 12-3 mark and Lawrence and Hart have teamed for a 6-4 record as a tandem.
Trinity, coached by Rob Hallagan, is currently ranked No. 6 in the Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Northeast Regional Rankings and No. 23 in the Omni Hotels/ITA Division III National Rankings. The Bantams will compete in the NESCAC Championships at Middlebury from Apr. 25-27.
Rowing Teams (M8-1, W4-3) Collect First Place Finishes
The Trinity College men’s and women’s rowing teams competed in races on Lake Quinsigamond, on Apr. 12 and hosted by Holy Cross and on Apr. 19 and hosted by Worcester Tech.
The Trinity College men’s and women varsity eight crews each finished in second place in their respective, four-boat races on April 12. The Bantam men finished 4.9 seconds behind Massachusetts, while edging the Holy Cross by one-tenth of a second, and speeding past the Massachusetts Maritime Academy by over 30 seconds.
The Trinity women finished over five seconds ahead of Mount Holyoke and Smith but could not catch Division I Holy Cross. The races were held in cold, rainy weather with a slight wind. Trinity won all four men’s and women’s novice races.
The Trinity College men’s varsity eight crew finished first in its five-boat race on Lake Quinsigamond on Apr. 19. The Bantam men finished 3.6 seconds ahead of second place New Hampshire in mild conditions with a light wind. The Trinity women finished in third place, 9.6 seconds behind first place New Hampshire and 5.6 seconds ahead of fourth place Rochester Tech. Second place Bates was No. 15, and RIT was No. 6 entering the race.
The Bantam men’s lineup against Holy Cross, Bates, New Hampshire, and Rochester Tech consisted of freshman Ed Slater (New York, N.Y.), sophomore Cameron Fraser (New York, N.Y.), junior Will Reed (Pawcatuck, Conn.), freshman Alex Kasser (Saxtons River, Vt.), freshman Jon Ford (Tampa, Fla.), freshman Henry Palmer (Greensboro, N.C.), sophomore Tom Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Marc Shaughnessy (Andover, Mass.), and junior coxswain George McLean (Fisher’s Island, N.Y.).
The Trinity men’s varsity eight, coached by Steve Fluhr, is ranked No. 4 in the New England Rowing Coaches Poll. The Trinity women’s varsity eight, coached by Lou Obrien-Berl, is also ranked No. 4 in the New England Rowing Coaches Poll, as well as No. 4 in the NCAA Division III New England Regional Poll, and No. 6 in the NCAA Division III National Poll.

Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Mid-Season Slide (8-5, 3-4)
The Trinity College women’s lacrosse team lost to Wheaton (Mass.), 15-14, on Apr. 10, against NESCAC rival Williams, 12-8, on Apr. 13 and against NESCAC rival Colby, 12-9, on Apr. 13. The Bantams downed league foe Bates, 14-8, on Apr. 16 but lost at NESCAC rival Middlebury, 18-4, on Apr. 19.
Against Wheaton, sophomore attacker Beatrice Gratry (Hunting Valley, Ohio) finished with six goals and two assists to lead all scorers, and senior midfielder Elizabeth Miller (Weston, Mass.) netted three goals and one assist. Trinity outshot Wheaton, 39-24, and Bantam junior goalie Alexandra Benjamin (Weston, Mass.) had nine saves.
Against Williams, which was ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 6 in the nation entering the game, the Bantams jumped out to a 5-3 lead over the first seven minutes thanks to two goals apiece by senior co-captain midfielder Katelyn Bowman (Summit, N.J.) and junior middie Betsy Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I.). Bowman scored her fourth goal of the game, unassisted, just before the five-minute mark to cut the lead to three, but Williams controlled the ball for the majority of the final five minutes. Gratry followed Bowman in the scoring column with two goals, and Walsh finished with two scores. Benjamin stopped a career-high 21 shots.
Bowman paced the Bantams with three goals and an assist against Colby at Southern Maine, while classmate Laura Davis (Bethesda, Md.) and sophomore middie Tracy Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) found the net twice each.
Gratry had four goals and one assist against Bates at Tufts, as Trinity dominated the game from its start, taking a 10-0 lead at the half before the Bobcats made it respectable in the second half against a rotating Bantam lineup. Bowman also scored four times, while Miller and Nesbit each notched a goal and two assists. Benjamin had eight saves.
At Middlebury, which was ranked No. 1 in New England and in the nation entering the game, Gratry led Trinity with a pair of goals and an assist.
Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, is currently tied with Bowdoin and Wesleyan for fifth place in the NESCAC with a 3-4 league record. Trinity will qualify for its second straight NESCAC Championship Tournament, and will host a first round game on Sun., Apr. 27 with wins in its final two games combined with a pair of losses by Colby in its last two games. The seven-team NESCAC Tournament champion recieves the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Gratry is third in the NESCAC in scoring with 5.15 ppg (67), second in the NESCAC and 19th in the nation in goals with 3.77 per game (49), and is 10th in assists with 1.38 per game (18). Bowman is 20th in the league in scoring with 2.62 ppg (34). Bowman was named to the NESCAC honor roll for her outstanding play against Williams and Colby, and Gratry graced the league honor roll for her exceptional performances against Bates and Middlebury
Trinity is currently ranked No. 17 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Poll. Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Wesleyan, ranked No. 6 in New England, on Apr. 22 and will host league foe Bowdoin, ranked No. 5 in New England and No. 16 in the nation, on Apr. 26 to close the regular season.
Outdoor Track Shines at Wesleyan and Springfield
The Trinity College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams competed in the Wesleyan Invitational on Apr. 12 and the Vern Cox Invitational at Springfield on Apr. 18.
Sophomore Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) came in second in the 800-meter run (2:22.51) and senior tri-captain Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.) came in a close third (2:24.27) at Wesleyan. Sophomore Kristi Wallin (Drexel Hill, Pa.) came in second in the 400-meters (1:00.30) for the Bantam women, while junior Hillary Evens (West Suffield, Conn.) finished second in the 5000-meter run (19:09.70).
Senior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) continued his dominance of the Division III track and field world with an impressive first place finish in the 1,500-meter run (3:51.59) for the Trinity men. Freshman Nicholas Cantone (Carlstadt, N.J.) placed first in the javelin throw (155’04.00”) while senior tri-captain Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) came in second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:44.64) for the Bantams.
Kane and sophomore Kathleen Forbes (Valley Falls, N.Y.) and freshman Jackie Kupper (Wethersfield, Conn.) won the 800 meters (2:16.96), the triple jump (32’10.25”), and the 1,500 meters (5:14.41), respectively, in the Vern Cox Invitationa, while Emord and sophomore Jerrod Bullock (Mattapan, Mass.) won the 5,000 meters (15:15.50) and the triple jump (41’09.75”), respectively, for the Bantam men’s squad.
Trinity boasted several impressive performances in the meet, including second-place finishes by freshman Kristen Geiger (Canterbury, N.H.) in the 100- (13.48) and 200-meter dashes (27.94), sophomore Caroline Pierson (Weston, Mass.) in the 400-meter dash (1:05.82), and senior tri-captain Lauren Young (Old Saybrook, Conn.) in the hammer throw (135’09.00”) on the women’s side. Junior James Porter (New Haven, Conn.) placed second in the 400 meters (50.31) and sophomore James Sullivan (Sterling, Mass.) came in second in the 1,500 meters (4:08.34).
Men’s Lacrosse Needs Help to Make NESCAC Tournament (5-7, 2-6)
The Trinity College men’s lacrosse team defeated Babson, 8-3, on Apr. 9, but lost to NESCAC rival Williams, 9-8, on Apr. 12. The Bantams lost at league foe Wesleyan, 13-9, on Apr. 15 and against NESCAC rival Middlebury, 18-7, on Apr. 19.
Junior attackman James Skiff (Portland, Maine) and senior tri-captain attackman Ravi Pillay (Fall Church, Va.) logged two goals and an assist apiece against Babson, while junior goalie Geoff Shaw (Charlotte, N.C.) was impressive in net with nine saves.
Against Williams, which was ranked No. 5 in New England entering the game, Trinity came back from an 8-5 deficit in the fourth quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to tie the game on a score from Pillay to freshman midfielder Coly Smith (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) with 5:21 remaining in the game. Williams took the lead back at the 4:12 mark and held on. Pillay, and Smith each tallied two goals and an assist for Trinity, while junior attackmen Sandy Leighton (Blue Bell, Pa.) and Skiff added two goals and two assists, respectively. Shaw made 10 saves in goal. Trinity outshot the Ephs, 38-23.
At Wesleyan, which was ranked No. 6 in New England entering the game, Trinity fought back from the four goal deficit to cut the Wesleyan advantage to 9-8 on goals by four different players, including an unassisted score by Pillay to pull Trinity within a point at the 9:04 mark of the fourth frame. Bantam sophomore middie Jake Dore (Manchester, Mass.) found junior attackman Shep Skiff (Portland, Maine) just before the five-minute mark to cut the deficit to two, but the Cardinals answered with two straight goals and held the Bantams at bay for the remainder of the game. Pillay paced the Bantams with two goals and three assists, while Skiff notched two goals and one assist, and senior tri-captain midfielder Erik Mazmanian (Newton, Mass.) scored twice. Shaw and freshman Jakob Isbrandsten (Greenwich, Conn.) combined for 10 saves in goal.
Against Middlebury, which was ranked No. 1 in New England and No. 4 in the nation entering the game, Pillay paced the Trinity offense with two goals and one assist, while Shaw and Isbrandsten combined for nine saves in goal.
Trinity, coached by Brian Silcott, is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC with a 2-6 league record. Trinity can qualify for its second NESCAC Championship Tournament with a win in its final game at Bowdoin combined with a loss by Bowdoin against Bates. The seven-team NESCAC Tournament champion recieves the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. First round games will be on Sun., Apr. 27. Skiff is ninth in the NESCAC in points with 3.00 per game (36) and eighth in goals with 2.25 per game (27), while Pillay is 12th in the league in points at 2.83 per game (34). Shaw was named to the NESCAC honor roll for the second time for his outstanding play against Babson and Williams.Trinity is currently ranked No. 10 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Rankings. The Bantams will visit NESCAC rival Bowdoin, ranked No. 7 in New England, on Apr. 26 in the final game of the regular season.

Softball Gets A League Win (5-18-1, 1-5)
The Trinity College softball team lost to Division II Teikyo Post, 9-1, on Apr. 10, but split a pair of 6-2 games at Amherst on Apr. 12. The Bantams split with NESCAC East rival Bowdoin, 7/4-4/9, the next day. Trinity was swept at Western Connecticut, 4/13-3/1, on Apr. 17 and at NESCAC East rival Bates, 4/8-3/0, on Apr. 19.
Senior co-captain Maureen Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) ripped a line drive double later scored the lone Bantam run on a sacrifice fly by fellow senior co-captain Laura Heath (Windsor, Conn.) against Teikyo Post.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Victoria Moshier (Old Saybrook, Conn.) tossed a four-hit, complete game with four strikeouts in the win at Amherst. Heneghan christened the game with a leadoff single and trotted home on an RBI double by Heath. Trinity tallied three more runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double by freshman Lindsey Freeman (Lancaster, Mass.). Moshier cruised through the latter innings to seal the win, recording her first collegiate victory. Heath and freshman Laura Watson (Carlisle, Mass.) each doubled home runs in the seventh inning for Trinity. Heath paced the Bantams with three hits, two RBI and a run scored, while Heneghan, senior Susan Kelly (Milford, Mass.) and Freeman added two hits each. In the loss at Amherst, Trinity scored on a solo home run and the first in her career by Watson and a sac fly by Kelly. Moshier pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief for Trinity.
Heath went 5-for-6 for the day with three runs, three RBI, two doubles, two steals, and two walks in the split against Bowdoin. Trinity broke open a 2-2 game in the bottom of the fifth inning on seven singles and a walk. Watson and Kelly each had RBI singles and scored in the inning. Kelly later tripled home Heath to make the score, 7-4, and Moshier retired the side in order in the seventh including a strikeout to end the game. Moshier went the distance, scattering 10 hits and striking out four. In the second game, Trinity fought its way back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Heath and Kelly drove home runs with two-out singles in the inning. The Polar Bears extended their lead in the sixth frame with an unearned run, and scored two more unearned runs in the seventh inning.
At Western Connecticut, which was ranked No. 13 in the nation entering the game, the Bantams opened the scoring in the first game in the top of the fourth inning on two Colonial errors, an RBI double by Heneghan, and a two-run single by freshman Dena Raffa (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Moshier allowed six hits and no earned runs with six strikeouts in a complete game loss in the first game, while Watson had two doubles in the second game.
At Bates, Trinity rallied back from a 3-1 deficit in the first game, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning when Kelly and freshman Alexandra Costello (Andover, Mass.) each scored an unearned run. Watson singled and Kelly doubled to give Trinity runners on second and third base in the top of the seventh frame, but Bates escaped with the narrow triumph. Moshier surrendered nine hits in a complete game effort, and Heath accounted for the first Trinity run on an RBI double in the first inning. Bates took the nightcap with four unearned runs in a six run, fourth inning.
Trinity, coached by Caitlin Luz is currently in fifth place in the NESCAC East with an 1-5 division record. Heath leads the NESCAC in hitting with a .426 batting average (29-for-68) and stolen bases with 10 in 12 tries. Heath is also second in the league in doubles with eight and third in hits with 29. Moshier is fifth in strikeouts with 38 on the mound. Heath was named to the NESCAC honor roll for the second time for getting nine hits in 13 at-bats with five runs, six RBI, five doubles, and six steals against Teikyo Post, Amherst, and Bowdoin.
Trinity will visit Eastern Connecticut for a doubleheader on Apr. 23 and finishes the season with a twinbill at NESCAC East rival Colby on Apr. 26.
Women’s Tennis Closes Thin Spring Season (6-4)
The Trinity College women’s tennis downed Smith, 6-3, on Apr. 12 but lost to Bowdoin at Smith the next day, 6-3, as well. The Bantams competed in the NESCAC Championship Tournament on Apr. 18-20 at Williams, finishing 10th.
Senior co-captain Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.) and senior Victoria Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) each won both their singles matches in the matches against Smith and Bowdoin, which was tied with the Bantams for the No. 4 ranking in the Northeast and ranked No. 16 in the nation entering the match. Huebner also teamed with senior co-captain Courtney Sargeant (North Attleboro, Mass.) for a doubles win against Smith. Sargeant, sophomore Brittany Olwine (Atlanta, Ga.) and freshman Melissa White (Westwood, Mass.) won singles matches against Smith as well.
Miller and Olwine won first round singles matches in the NESCAC Tournament, and both provided some early excitement, coming back from first set losses to win the final two sets in the No. 3 singles fight and the No. 2 singles flight, respectively.
Miller leads Trinity with a 5-2 singles record, while Huebner is 7-5. The Bantams played the spring season without three of their top six players, but Miller and classmate Aimee Hecht (Aspen, Colo.) stepped in and contributed nicely after three years of hard work.
Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett, is currently ranked No. 6 in the Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Northeast Regional Rankings and No. 22 in the Omni Hotels/ITA Division III National Rankings. The Bantams have finished their regular season and look to earn a third consecutive NCAA Division III National Championship bid.
Golf Competes at Elms and Wesleyan
The Trinity College golf team finished third in the Elms Invitational on Apr. 14 at Chicopee Country Club and in the Wesleyan Invitational at Lyman Meadows on Apr. 16
Sophomore Jay Pulaski (Kensington, Conn.) shot a round of 80 to place third at Elms, while senior Jon Martis (Pepper Pike, Ohio) placed fourth with a round of 81. Pulaski played consistently throughout the day, shooting a 40 on both the front and back nine. Martis was able to make up for a 43 on the front nine with a score of 38 on the back.
DiMenna and fellow junior Jonathan Shoemaker (Oakton, Va.) combined for a best ball score of 79 at Lyman Meadows. Three Trinity duos combined for a team score of 239, which was nine points behind first place Rensselaer at 230.

Junior Andrew Eastman (Milton, Mass.) recorded a season-low score of 75, while Martis had a season-low scoreof 77, and junior Peter Munsill (Peace Dale, R.I.) shot a season-low 156 in the New England Championships. Martis finishes his four years with a career low score of 166.
