Men’s Basketball Splits
NESCAC Road Trip (12-6, 4-2)

 

The Trinity College men’s basketball team lost at NESCAC rival Bates, 67-64, on Jan. 31 but rebounded to defeat league foe Tufts, 97-77, on Feb. 1.

At Bates, which was ranked No. 5 in the Northeast region entering the game, Trinity dominated the first half, leading by as many as 15 points. Bates assumed the lead in the second half until Bantam sophomore guard John Halas (White Plains, N.Y.) nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 64 with seven seconds on the clock. Then, Bates dribbled the ball up the court and heaved the shot that went in just before the buzzer. senior tri-captain forward Ryan Uszenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) led Trinity with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while freshman forward Tyler Rhoten (Ridgewood, N.J.) added 16 points and seven boards, and Halas tacked on 13 points.

Rhoten scored a career-high 39 points, including 26 in the first half at Tufts, connecting on 18 of 34 shots to lead Trinity to a 42 for 78 shooting performance overall (53.8 percent). He added nine rebounds, while junior guard Smith finished with a career-high 19 points and four steals off the bench, and senior tri-captain forward Corey Days (Baltimore, Md.) added 12 points and six boards. Bantam sophomore point guard Jesse Farrell (Minneapolis, Minn.) dished out 10 assists.

Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, is currently in fourth place in the NESCAC with a 4-2 league record. Trinity is second in the NESCAC in field goal percentage at 47.8 percent (534-1116). Days leads the league in blocked shots at 2.18 per game (37) and field goal shooting at 64.7 percent (66-102). Farrell leads the conference in assists with 7.61 per game (137) and is seventh in steals with 1.67 per game (30). Rhoten is third in the NESCAC in scoring with 17.8 ppg, sixth in rebounding with 7.6 per contest (136), and seventh in both free throw shooting at 80.4 percent (45-56) and field goal shooting at 52.2 percent (141-270). Halas is third in the league in steals with 2.00 per game (36), seventh in assists with 3.44 per game (62) and 12th in scoring at 13.8 ppg. junior guard Shaun Smyth (Manchester, Conn.) is ninth in the NESCAC in field goal shooting at 51.0 percent (52-101) and Uszenski is ninth in steals with 1.59 per game (27). Rhoten was named to NESCAC honor roll for his outstanding play against Bates and Tufts.

Trinity will visit Clark, ranked No. 4 in the Northeast region, on Thu., Feb. 6 and will host NESCAC rival Amherst, ranked No. 3 in the Northeast and No. 12 in the nation, on Sat., Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.

First League Win Eludes Women’s Basketball (5-11, 0-6)

The Trinity College women’s basketball team defeated Suffolk, 78-65, on Jan. 28, but lost to NESCAC rival Bates, 75-48, on Jan. 31 and to league foe Tufts, 80-43, on Feb. 1.

Freshman forward Jennifer Gargiulo (Boxborough, Mass.) had 19 points on six-out-of-10 field goal shooting, along with 16 rebounds and four assists against Suffolk. Senior captain guard Elizabeth Bontempo (Granby, Mass.), stepped back behind the arc to hit on four out of five three-pointers and 14 first half points, and sophomore center Rebecca Bell (Colorado Springs, Colo.), chipped in 17 points, added eight rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Against Bates, McCaffrey tallied a team-high 15 points and seven boards, making nine out of 10 shots from the foul line, and Gargiulo added eight points, a game-high 13 rebounds, and three steals.

The next day against Tufts, which was ranked No. 8 in New England entering the game, McCaffrey led Trinity in scoring with 13 points and added six rebounds and four assists, and Gargiulo added 11 points and six boards.

Trinity, coached by Maureen Pine, is currently in 10th place in the NESCAC with an 0-6 league record. Sophomore guard Tracy Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) leads the league in assists at 4.56 per game (73), while Bell is second in the conference in three-point field goal shooting at 40.3 percent (27-67) and 15th in scoring with 12.0 ppg. McCaffrey is fourth in the NESCAC in scoring with 15.6 ppg, sixth in rebounding with 7.6 per contest (122), sixth in free throw percentage at 78.2 percent (61-78), and eighth in field goal percentage at 49.2 percent (94-191). Gargiulo is second in the league in rebounds with 9.4 per game (151), and 20th in scoring at 10.2 ppg.

The Bantams will visit Western Connecticut on Tue., Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. and will host Westfield State on Thu., Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m., before playing at NESCAC rival Amherst on Sat., Feb. 8 at 3 p.m.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Visit Maine (M0-8, W5-4)

The Trinity College men’s and women’s swimming team split with Bowdoin but both fell against Colby in a tri-meet on Feb. 1 at Colby. The Bantam men dropped a 166-115 decision against Bowdoin and a 183-96 decision against the hosts, while the women edged Bowdoin, 152-148, and lost to Colby, 180-114.

Freshman Amy Corvino (Florham Park, N.J.) won the 100- (1:12.23) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:36.65) events for the women, and classmate Christian Greer (Fairfield, Conn.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:33.90) for the men. Freshman Lindsey Jordan (Summit, N.J.) took first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.76) for the Bantam women’s squad, and classmate Caroline Harrison (Chatham, N.J.) finished second in the one- (179.60) and the three-meter (189.90) dives for Trinity.

Trinity will swim at Clark on Sat., Feb. 7 at 1 p.m.

Wrestling Extends Win Streak to Nine (16-2)

The Trinity College wrestling team defeated New York Maritime, 49-5, and Western New England, 53-0, in a home tri-match on Feb. 1.

Trinity sophomore Daniel Feltsman (New York, N.Y.) pinned his Privateer opponent in just 29 seconds at 174 pounds to record his first career victory, while sophomore Dave Bucco (Paramus, N.J.) pinned opponents at 157 and 165 pounds for the Bantams.

Trinity, coached by Sebastian Amato, is currently ranked No. 1 in the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Coaches’ Poll and No. 5 in New England among all-divisions. Eight Bantams are ranked among the top six in New England in their respective weight class. Freshman Luis Murillo (Meriden, Conn.) is fifth at 125 pounds, freshman Mark Romeo (Ridgewood, N.J.) is sixth at 141 pounds, Bucco is No. 4 at 157 pounds, junior co-captain Wesley Connell (Simsbury, Conn.) is No. 3 at 165 pounds, senior Lucas McKittrick (Lincolnville, Maine) is No. 6 at 174 pounds, junior co-captain Michael Doros (East Hartford, Conn.) is No. 1 at 184 pounds, sophomore Matt Webster (Foxboro, Mass.) is No. 3 at 197 pounds, and freshman Michael Blair (Plymouth, N.H.) is No. 1 at heavyweight.

Blair and Connell lead Trinity with 14-1 records, while Doros is 18-2, Webster is 12-2, Romeo is 17-4, and Bucco is 16-4. Senior Eric Egolf (Glastonbury, Conn.) has a 12-7 mark this season at 149 pounds, McKittrick is 9-5, and Murillo boasts a 4-3 mark. Connell has a team-high nine pins, while Webster has seven and Romeo has six.

Trinity, ranked No. 1 in the New England Division Coaches’ Poll and No. 6 among all divisions.

Men’s Ice Hockey Drops Pair in Maine (11-4-2, 10-2-1)

The Trinity College men’s ice hockey team lost at NESCAC rival Bowdoin, 8-3, on Feb. 7 and to league foe Colby, 3-1, on Feb. 8.

At Bowdoin, which was ranked No. 8 in the nation entering the game, junior forward Dan Gyllstrom (Hudson, Mass.) had a goal and an assist, while sophomore goaltender Doug Kisielius (Park Ridge, Ill.) had 38 saves. Gyllstrom scored Trinity’s only goal and Kisielius made 24 saves the next day at Colby, whoch was ranked No. 14 in the nation entering the game.

Trinity, coached by John Dunham, is currently tied with Colby for third place in the NESCAC with a 10-2-1 record. The Bantams lead the NESCAC on the power play with a 32.2 percentage (28-87). Ori is sixth in the conference in scoring with 24 points and fourth in assists with 14, as well as 10th in goals with 10. Natale is eighth in the NESCAC in scoring with 24 points and sixth in assists with 13, while O’Leary is third in assists with 15, and Stevens is fifth in the league in goals with 13. Kisielius is third in the conference in save percentage at .905.

Trinity is currently ranked No. 14 in the United States College Hockey Online.com (USCHO.com) National Poll. The Bantams will host Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East rival Massachusetts College on Fri., Feb. 7 at 7:45 p.m. and ECAC foe Skidmore on Sat., Feb. 8 at 4 p.m.

Women’s Ice Hockey Ties Colby (2-9-1, 2-9-1)

The Trinity College women’s ice hockey team tied NESCAC rival Amherst, 3-3, on Jan. 31 but dropped a 7-2 game against league foe Hamilton on Feb. 1

Against Amherst, Trinity forced a 3-3 tie on the second goal of the game by freshman forward Tara Borawski (Simsbury, Conn.). Trinity opened the scoring in the game on a goal by sophomore defense Elizabeth Jakes (Roseville, Minn.), and junior tri-captian Mimi MacKinnon (Glen Cove, N.Y.) had 28 saves in goal for the Bantams. Sophomore forward Kristy Hadeka (Castleton, Vt.) and freshman forward Jessica Keeley (Scituate, Mass.) scored against Hamilton, while MacKinnon made 36 saves in a losing effort.

Trinity, coached by Andrew McPhee, is currently in seventh place in the NESCAC at 2-9-2. Borawski is third in the conference in goals with 14. Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Middlebury, ranked No. 4 in the nation, on Fri., Feb. 7 and league foe Williams, ranked No. 5 in the nation, on Sat., Feb. 1.

Women’s Squash Wins at Harvard (6-0)

The Trinity College women’s squash team defeated Harvard, 8-1, on the road on Feb. 1.

Freshman Maria Restrepo (Medellin, Colombia) won the most dominant victory of the day at Harvard, which was ranked No. 2 in the nation entering the match. Restrepo allowed only six points in a 3-0 triumph at No. 5, while sophomore Lynn Leong (Kota Bharu, Malaysia) and junior Pam Saunders (Harare, Zimbabwe) won 3-0 victories at No. 2 and No. 4 for the Bantams.

Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett, currently has eight Bantams ranked among the top 20 players in the nation. Junior co-captain Amina Helal (Manchester, England) is No. 1, followed by Leong at No. 2, Restrepo at No. 6, freshman Larissa Stephenson (Auckland, New Zealand) at No. 7, Saunders at No. 8, senior co-captain Clare Austin (Banbury, England) at No. 14, Bhandare at No. 15, and sophomore Bronwyn Cooper (Harare, Zimbabwe) at No. 19.

Trinity, ranked No. 1 in the College Squash Association (CSA) National rankings, will visit Brown, ranked No. 7 in the nation, on Tue., Feb. 4 at 5 p.m., before hosting Bates, Bowdoin, ranked No. 10 in the nation, Colby, and Vassar on Sat., Feb. 8 and Sun., Feb. 9.

Men’s Squash Gets Past Harvard (11-0)

The Trinity College men’s squash team won at Dartmouth, 9-0, on Jan. 18, and defeated Yale, 8-1, at home on Jan. 21. The Bantams swept MIT and Tufts, both by 9-0 scores, on Jan. 22, and won, 3-0, against Rochester, Pennsylvania, and Navy on Jan. 24, 25, and 26. The wins push Trinity’s winning streak to 81 in a row dating back to the 1998 national championship tournament finals.

Senior Carl Baglio (Toronto, Ontario) won the most dominant victories of the day at Harvard, which was ranked No. 3 in the nation entering the match. Baglio allowed just four points in the No. 9 spot, while five other men’s players won 3-0 matches for the Bantams. Trinity junior Michael Ferreira (Stamford, England), ranked as the No. 3 player in the nation, blanked the nation’s No. 10 player at the No. 1 position.

Trinity, coached by Paul Assaiante, currently has seven Bantams ranked among the top 25 players in the nation. Samper is No. 2, followed by Ferreira at No. 3, senior co-captain Nicholas Kyme (Pembroke, Bermuda) at No. 7, sophomore Regardt Schonborn (Bloemfontein, South Africa) at No. 9, freshman Yvain Badan (Lausanne, Switzerland) at No. 17, junior Nadeem Osman (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) at No. 23, and junior Patrick Malloy (Boston, Mass.) at No. 24. Baglio leads Trinity with a 9-0 records while classmate Thaddeus Roberts (Philadelphia, Pa.) is 8-0, and Schonborn and Badan are both 7-0. Malloy and freshmen Nick Raho (Rye, N.Y.) and Tripp Kyle (Jenkintown, Pa.) are all 6-0.

Trinity, ranked No. 1 in the College Squash Association (CSA) National rankings, will visit Brown, ranked No. 9 in the nation, on Tue, Feb. 4, before hosting Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Franklin and Marshall, Hobart, and Vassar from Fri., Feb. 7 thru Sun., Feb. 9.

Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Enjoy Success

The Trinity College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams finished seventh and sixth, respectively, in the Tufts Invitational on Jan. 18. The squads competed in the Wesleyan Invitational and the Terrier Classic at Boston University on Jan. 25, before placing third and second, respectively, in the Coast Guard Invitational on Feb. 1.

Women’s senior tri-captain Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, Mass.) and sophomore Kathleen Forbes (Valley Falls, N.Y.) won the 3,000-meter run (10:52.89) and the triple jump (10.21 m), respectively, tat Tufts. Men’s senior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) took first in the 3,000-meter run (8:19.48). Sophomore Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) finished third in both the women’s 1,000- (3:07.57) and 1,50-meter runs (4:48.80) for the Bantam women, and freshman Chris Orr (Hingham, Mass.) placed third in the men’s 55-meter high hurdles (8.22 s).

Kane won the 1,500-meter run (4:45.89) in the Wesleyan Invitational, while Bak and fellow senior tri-captain Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) competed in the 5,000 meters in the Terrier Classic in Boston. Bak set a new College record in the event, finishing in 14:18.99 to break his own record by almost one second. Bak’s time qualifies him automatically for the NCAA Division III National Championships. Emord ran a 14:55.77 to set a new personal record in the 5,000.

Senior Josh Griffis (Templeton, Mass.) highlighted the men’s meet at Wesleyan with a fifth place finish in the shot put (43’08.00”), while Rheaume and junior Elizabeth Brown (Belmont, Mass.) finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run (19:39.14) and the 1,000-meter run (3:18.84), respectively, for the Bantam women.

At Coast Guard, Bak finished first in both the 1,000- and 1,500-meter runs at the US Coast Guard Academy this weekend. With times of 2:29 in the 1,000, and 3:49.76 in the 1,500, he set new facility records, set a new trinity record in the 1,000 meters, and also qualified automatically for the NCAA Division III Championships in March. Also winning their respective events for the Trinity men were junior James Porter (New Haven, Conn.), with a time of 6.85 in the 55-meter dash, senior tri-captain Bob McGovern (Warwick, R.I.) in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.19, and sophomore James Sullivan (Sterling, Mass.) with a time of 9:07.3 in the 3,000-meter run.

On the women’s side, Kane won both the 1,000- and 1,500-meter runs with times of 3:04.73 and 4:49.42, respectively, and fellow sophomore Kristi Wallen (Drexel Hill, Pa.) won both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, posting times of 28.03 in the 200, and a time of 1:01.71 in the 400. Freshman Lucy Hollis (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.95, came in second in the long jump by jumping 15”5’, and placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.07.

Trinity will compete in the Collegiate Track Conference (CTC) Championships at the New York City Armory on Sun., Feb. 9.
