Women’s Tennis Boasts Three The Trinity College women’s tennis team finished tied with Brandeis for fourth place out of 25 teams in the New England Championships at Amherst on Oct. 18-20. Junior Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) won four out of five singles matches in the No. 1 singles flight, and combined with senior co-captain Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.) to win three out of four doubles matches in the No. 2 doubles flight, reaching the finals of each flight. Junior co-captain Courtney Sargeant (Attleboro, Mass.) also reached the final round of her singles flight. Sargeant, unseeded in the No. 3 singles flight, won three matches, needing the third set to win two of the three. Sargeant, Goldman, and Huebner receive All-New England honors for their outstanding performances. |

Bantam sophomore Diana Dreyfus (Scarsdale, N.Y.), seeded fourth at No. 2 singles, won three straight-set matches before retiring due to an injured shoulder.
The Trinity women are ranked No. 3 in New England and No. 15 in the nation (www.raceberryjam.com), while the Bantam men’s squad is ranked No. 9 in New England.
The Bantam doubles team of senior co-captain Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.) and junior Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) closed out the fall season with a 9-3 record. Dreyfus was a team-best 7-4 in singles matches, while Goldman went 9-6, Huebner was 5-4, and Sargeant ended up 7-6.
Field Hockey Loses at Bowdoin (3-8, 2-5)
The Trinity College field hockey lost, 2-1, at Bowdoin on Oct. 19.
At Bowdoin, which was ranked No. 15 in the nation entering the game, Bantam senior forward Lindsay Peet (Stowe, Vt.) scored the Trinity goal and junior goalie Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio) stopped 10 shots.
Trinity, coached by Anne Parmenter, is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC with an 2-5 league record. Trinity can qualify for its first NESCAC Championship Tournament with a win in one or both of its final league games against Wesleyan and Amherst along with losses by other teams. Gillespie leads the NESCAC with 8.55 saves per game (94).
Trinity will host Worcester State on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. and will visit NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Oct. 26 at 11 a.m..
Volleyball Qualifies for NESCAC Tourney (10-14, 4-6)
The Trinity College volleyball team defeated NESCAC rival Hamilton, 3-2. on Oct. 18 at Middlebury, but lost 3-0 decisions against Middlebury and Williams the next day in Vermont.
Sophomore outside hitter Kate Hunter (Ross, Calif.) notched 18 kills, while senior co-captain setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) totaled 36 assists and five kills, and freshman outside hitter Lucy Hollis (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) registered 17 kills and three aces against Hamilton. Hollis added a team-high 14 kills against Middlebury and seven kills and two aces in the Williams match. Horton contributed 20 assists against Williams, which was ranked No.5 in New England entering the match.
Trinity, coached by Angela Mills, finished its 2002 NESCAC slate with a 4-6 record to finish in eighth place in the league. The NESCAC Championship Tournament will take place at top-seeded Williams College on Nov. 8 and 9. The Bantams, seeded No. 8, will play Williams in the first round on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. Trinity is second in the league in digs with 18.33 per game. Hollis is third in the conference in digs with 4.42 per game (402), and classmate Chelsea Lake (Minneapolis, Minn.) is sixth with 3.89 per game (323). Hollis was named to the NESCAC honor roll for her play in the NESCAC Seeding Tourney at Middlebury. She totaled 38 kills, four aces, 39 digs in 11 games.
Trinity will visit Western Connecticut on Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. and will compete in the Coast Guard Classic against Wesleyan, Roger Williams, and Coast Guard, ranked No. 6 in New England, on Oct. 26.
Women’s Soccer Splits Two Road Games (5-5-1, 2-4-1)
The Trinity College women’s soccer team downed Salve Regina, 3-2, on Oct. 16 but lost, 3-0, at NESCAC rival Bowdoin on Oct. 19.
Junior forward Lindsay Aquilina (Williamsville, N.Y.) assisted on the game-tying goal and scored the game-winner at Salve Regina. Bantam sophomore midfielder Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) recorded an unassisted goal and Aquilina found freshman forward Kristen Geiger (Canterbury, N.H.) for her first collegiate goal. Trinity sophomore Katherine Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.) had nine saves. Classmate Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.) had seven saves in the loss at Bowdoin, which was ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 23 in the nation entering the game.
Trinity, coached by Michael Smith, is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC with a 2-4-1 league record. The Bantams can qualify for a second consecutive NESCAC Championship Tournament with a win in either of its final two league games against Wesleyan and Amherst combined with losses by some other teams. Mahoney is third in the league in saves with 6.50 per game (39). Sophomore midfielder Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) is sixth in the conference in scoring with 1.60 per game (16) and in goals at 0.70 points per contest (7). Junior Aquilina is ninth on the NESCAC scoring list with 1.20 per contest (12) and goal list with 0.50 per game (5). Junior back Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury, Conn.) is ninth in the conference in assists with 0.30 per game (3) and sophomore forward Nicole Mauger (East Bridgewater, Mass.) is 10th at 0.29 per game (2).
Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Wesleyan on Oct. 26 at 2 p.m.
Men’s Soccer Suffers Two Overtime Defeats (4-5-1, 3-3-1)
The Trinity College men’s soccer team lost at Eastern Connecticut, 4-3, in overtime on Oct. 16 and at NESCAC rival Bowdoin, 3-2, in overtime on Oct. 19.
At Eastern Connecticut, the Bantams forced the overtime on a header by junior midfielder Chris Walther (Palisades, N.Y.), which was set up by a nice cross from senior midfielder Nick Lombardi (New Boston, N.H.). Trinity junior back Tim Cross (Marblehead, Mass.) headed in the second Bantam goal from sophomore midfielder Ramon Bell (Kingston, Jamaica). Bantam sophomore goalie Jamie Burns (Minnetonka, Minn.) had six saves. Trinity senior forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on a score by junior forward John Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.) at Bowdoin, which was ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 12 in the nation entering the game.
Trinity, coached by Eddie Mighten, is currently in sixth place in the NESCAC with a 3-3-1 league record. The Bantams can qualify for its first NESCAC Championship Tournament with a win in either of its final two league games against Wesleyan and Amherst and/or a Bates loss in one of its last two league games. The Bantams are fourth in the league in scoring offense with 2.50 goals per game (26). Sandell is second in the conference in scoring with 2.22 per game (20) and assists with 0.67 per game (6), and fourth in goals with 0.78 per game (7). Junior goalkeeper Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) is third in the NESCAC in saves at 4.86 per game (34), while freshman midfielder Alan Shilling (South Brunswick, N.J.) is sixth in the league in assists with 0.44 per game (4). Sandell was named to the NESCAC honor roll for scoring a goal and an assist at Bowdoin.
Trinity will host Salve Regina on Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.and will visit league rival Wesleyan, ranked No. 8 in New England, on Oct. 26 at 11 a.m.
Women’s Cross Country Takes Westfield State Invitational
The Trinity College women’s cross country team won the James Early Invitational at Westfield State on Oct. 19, while the men’s squad finished fourth. The women’s race was a 6,000-meter course as opposed to the usual 5,000-meter course
Junior Karen Roy (Ashford, Conn.) and senior co-captains Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.) and Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished fifth, sixth, and eighth, respectively, in the James Early Invitational. Men’s senior co-captain Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) came in third overall to lead the Bantam men to a fourth place finish in the men’s race. Roy finished with a time of 22:33.50, while Klein came in at 22:35.30, and Rheaume crossed the finish line at 22:38.30. Bantam sophomore Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) was 12th overall with a time of 22:51.50. Emord recorded a time of 25:21.10.
