Bak Shatters 5-Mile Record 
at New England Open Cross Country Meet

The Trinity College men’s and women’s cross country teams finished 21st out of 46 and 15th out 42 teams, respectively, in the New England Open Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Oct. 11.

Senior co-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) finished second overall with a College record time of 23:59. Sophomore Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) finished 24th overall at 18:12 for the Bantam women. Bak’s time shattered by 40 seconds his own previous Trinity record of 24:39, which he set earlier this season at Mass.-Dartmouth. Both Trinity team scores were achieved using just six of seven countable runners

The Trinity women are ranked No. 3 in New England and No. 15 in the nation (www.raceberryjam.com), while the Bantam men’s squad is ranked No. 9 in New England.

Field Hockey Wins Three in a Row (3-7, 2-4)

The Trinity College field hockey team won in overtime at Smith, 1-0, on Oct. 10 and defeated New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Tufts, 2-1, in overtime on Oct. 12 for its third consecutive triumph, all achieved in overtime.

Senior co-captain defender Susan Hoppock (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored the game-winning goal 6:50 into overtime at Smith. Hoppock’s clinching goal came off the second game-winning assist in as many games for Bantam junior forward Jennifer Latiff (Rosemont, Pa.). Trinity junior goalie Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio) needed to make just one save for her first career shutout, as the Bantam defensive front of Hoppock, senior co-captain Jennifer Rieg (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), junior Meriden Daly (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and sophomore Ayres Heller (Bethesda, Md.) yielded one shot over 76 minutes.

Latiff scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Tufts. Bantam midfielder Katherine Byron (Greens Farms, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal in regulation, while Hoppock assisted on both Trinity scores. Gillespie had 11 saves.

Trinity, coached by Anne Parmenter, is currently tied with Colby for seventh place in the NESCAC with an 2-4 league record. Gillespie leads the NESCAC with 8.90 saves per game (89). Hoppock was named to the NESCAC honor roll for her outstanding play against Smith and Tufts.

Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Bowdoin, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III New England West Region and No. 15 in the nation, on Oct. 19 at noon.

Golf Finishes Third at Eph Classic

The Trinity College golf team finished third out of eight teams in the Eph Classic at Williams College’s Taconic Golf Club on Oct. 13.

Senior co-captain Matthew Greason (North Bridgton, Maine) shot a round of 72 to finish second overall and one shot shy of first place in the tournament, which was shortened to one day when Saturday’s round was canceled due to rain. Greason played consistently throughout the day, posting scores of 36 on the front and back nines. Classmate Jon Martis (Pepper Pike, Ohio) shot a 77 to finish tied for 15th overall, while junior Andrew Eastman (Milton, Mass.) had a 78 to tie for 20th place.

Women’s Tennis Splits Final Week of Fall Dual Matches (4-3)

The Trinity College women’s tennis team won at Division I Hartford, 4-3, on Oct. 10 but dropped an 8-1 decision against Tufts in its final dual match of the 2002 fall season.

Senior Victoria Miller (St. Louis, Mo.) dominated in her first match of the season, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles and teamed with freshman Melissa White (Westwood, Mass.) for an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles to lead the way at Hartford.

Senior co-captain Courtney Sargeant (North Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Brittany Olwine (Atlanta, Ga.) earned Trinity its only point with an 8-4 triumph at first doubles against Tufts in a match that was moved indoors to the Newington Racquet Club due to heavy rains.

The Bantam doubles team of senior co-captain Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.) and junior Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) has posted a 5-2 record this fall, while Sargeant and sophomore Diana Dreyfus (Scardale, N.Y.) are 4-3 as a doubles tandem. Huebner and Dreyfus have posted 4-3 records in singles matches, while Goldman is 5-5.

Trinity will close out the fall campaign in the New England Division III Championships at Amherst on Oct. 18-20.

Women’s Soccer Stumbles Against Tufts (4-4-1, 2-3-1)

The Trinity College women’s soccer team lost to NESCAC rival Tufts, 5-1, on Oct. 12.

Against Tufts, which was ranked No. 9 in New England entering the match, freshman forward Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, Conn.) netted the lone Bantam goal in the pouring rain. Sophomore goalkeepers Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and Katherine Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.) combined for 10 saves in a losing effort for the Bantams.

Trinity, coached by Michael Smith, is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC with a 2-3-1 league record. Sophomore forward Nicole Mauger (East Bridgewater, Mass.) is third in the league in assists with 0.40 per game (2), sixth in scoring with 1.44 points per game (8), and eighth in goals with 0.60 per game (3). Sophomore midfielder Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) is sixth in the conference in goals with 0.67 per game (6) and seventh in scoring at 1.44 points per contest (13). Junior back Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury, Conn.) is eighth on the NESCAC assist list with 0.33 per contest (3).

Trinity will visit Salve Regina on Wed., Oct. 16 and NESCAC rival Bowdoin, ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 23 in the nation, Oct. 19 at 12:30 p.m.

Men’s Soccer Loses Heartbreaker to Tufts (4-3-1, 3-2-1)

The Trinity College men’s soccer team lost to NESCAC rival Tufts, 3-2, in overtime on Oct. 12.

Against Tufts, Bantam junior midfielder John Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.) and sophomore forward John Ziadie (Kingston, Jamaica) scored goals for Trinity. Klaus added an assist along with senior co-captain midfielder Peter Zoppi (Cheshire, Conn.), while junior netminder Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) stopped eight shots for the Bantams.

Trinity, coached by Eddie Mighten, is currently tied with Middlebury for fourth place in the NESCAC with a 3-2-1 league record. The Bantams are third in the league in scoring offense with 2.54 goals per game (21). Doherty is second in the conference in saves with 5.29 per game (37). Senior co-captain forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) is third in the NESCAC in scoring at 2.13 points per game (17) and assists with 0.63 per game at (5), as well as fifth in goals per game at 0.75 (6). Klaus and freshman midfielder Alan Shilling (South Brunswick, N.J.) are tied for sixth in the league in assists with 0.50 per game (4), while Klaus is also 10th in the conference in scoring with 1.25 points per contest (10).

Trinity will visit Eastern Connecticut on Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m. and NESCAC rival Bowdoin, ranked No. 2 in New England and No. 12 in the nation, on Oct. 19 at noon.

Volleyball Wins Three of Five Matches (9-12, 3-4)

The Trinity College volleyball team defeated Western New England, 3-1, on the road on Oct. 8. The Bantams hosted a NESCAC Seeding Tournament on Oct. 11 and 12, losing 3-0, against Wesleyan and, 3-2, against Bates on the 11th. Trinity rebounded to upend Bowdoin, 3-0, and Colby, 3-2, on Oct. 12.

Freshman outside hitter Lucy Hollis (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) totaled 10 kills, 15 digs and five service aces at Western New England. Senior co-captain setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) chipped in with 20 assists and junior co-captain middle blocker Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, NC) added eight blocks.

Hollis had 14 digs and five aces against Wesleyan, while sophomore outside hitter Kate Hunter (Ross, Calif.) had 18 kills and 10 digs to help Trinity deal Colby its first league loss. Hollis added 13 kills and 27 digs and Horton notched 29 assists in the victory.

Trinity, coached by Angela Mills, is currently in seventh place in the NESCAC with a 3-4 league record. Trinity leads the league in digs with 19.24 per game. Hollis is second in the conference in digs with 4.54 per game (363), and classmate Chelsea Lake (Minneapolis, Minn.) is third with 3.95 per game (288). Horton is seventh in the NESCAC in assists with 7.54 per game (588), while Walker and freshman outside hitter Irena Tsvetkova (Sofia, Bulgaria) are tied for 10th in the league in blocks and service aces, respectively. Walker has 0.84 blocks per game (67) and Tsvetkova has 0.55 aces per game (23). Hunter was named to the NESCAC honor roll for her play in the NESCAC Seeding Tourney. She totaled 46 kills, six aces, 37 digs, and six blocks in 16 games.

Trinity will travel to Vermont for a NESCAC Seeding Tournament at Middlebury on Oct. 18 and 19. The Bantams will face Hamilton on Oct. 18 and Middlebury and Williams, ranked No. 5 in New England, on Oct. 19.
