Sandell Earns NESCAC Player of the Week The Trinity College men’s soccer team lost to league foe Williams, 6-1, on Sept. 29. The Bantams trounced Johnson and Wales, 7-1, on Oct. 2 and edged NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 2-1, on the road on Oct. 5. Sandell tallied two goals and an assist against Johnson and Wales, inclduing the game-tying score off a cross by junior midfielder John Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.). Junior back Tim Cross (Marblehead, Mass.) headed in the go-ahead score from senior co-captain midfielder Peter Zoppi (Cheshire, Conn.) in the 18th minute. Sandell and Zoppi each scored early in the second half, along with sophomore Rob Bialobrzeski (Hampton, N.H.) for the Bantams. Trinity freshman forward Chris Fryxell (Windsor, Conn.) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career just 24 seconds apart late in the game. Klaus finished with a pair of assists, while Cross and Bialobrzeski notched assists to go with their own scoring shots.
Junior midfielder Chris Walther (Palisades, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal :20 into the game at Connecticut College, receiving the first of two assists from Sandell. Sandell fed Zoppi on a cross for the second Bantam score. Doherty had eight saves for the visiting Bantams.
Trinity, coached by Eddie Mighten, is currently tied with Middlebury for fourth place in the NESCAC with a 3-1-1 league record. Senior co-captain Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) is second in the NESCAC in scoring with 2.43 points per game (17), fourth in goals at 0.86 per game (6), and fourth in assists per game at 0.71 (5). Junior goalkeeper Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) is fourth in the NESCAC with 4.83 saves per game (29 in 6 games). Freshman midfielder Alan Shilling (South Brunswick, N.J.) is fifth in the league lead in assists with 0.57 per game (4), while junior midfielder John Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.) and junior back Tim Cross (Marblehead, Mass.) are tied for seventh in assists at 0.43 per game (3), and in goals with 0.80 per game (4). Freshman forward Chris Fryxell (Windsor, Conn.) is ninth in the conference with 0.50 goals per game (2 in 4 games). Freshman midfielder Jeff Hodge (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) has started all seven games at midfielder for Trinity. Sandell was named as the NESCAC Player of the Week after totaling seven points in the wins over Johnson and Wales and Connecticut College.
Trinity will host NESCAC rival Tufts on Oct. 5 at 11 a.m.
Grabowski Earns NESCAC Player of the Week for
Field Hockey (1-7, 1-4)The Trinity College field hockey team lost to league foe Bates, 6-1, on Sept. 22. The Bantams suffered a heartbreaking, 2-1, loss against Springfield on penalty strokes on Oct. 2, but won its first game of the season, 2-1, in overtime at conference rival Connecticut College on Oct. 5
At Williams, junior goalie Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio) turned away 18 shots in a tremendous effort. Against Springfield, the teams played to a 1-1 tie through regulation and both sudden death overtimes, starting with a Bantam goal by junior forward Kristen Grabowski (Burlington, Conn.) with 23:43 remaining in the first half, assisted by freshman forward Caitlin French (Rye, N.Y.). Bantam junior netminder Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio) stopped five shots in a losing effort.
French scored the game-winning goal and the first of her collegiate career 18 seconds into overtime at Connecticut College. Grabowski added a goal and assisted on the game-winner for the Bantams, while Gillespie had nine stops for the winning side.
Trinity, coached by Anne Parmenter, is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC with an 1-4 league record. Gillespie leads the NESCAC with 9.63 saves per game (77). Grabowski was named as the NESCAC Player of the Week for scoring goals against both Springfield and Connecticut College.
Trinity will host NESCAC rival Tufts Oct. 12 at 11 a.m., immediately following a dedication ceremony of the new AstroTurf field, which will be officially named Robin L. Sheppard Field after Trinity’s retired field hockey and lacrosse coach Robin Sheppard who remains at the College as Associate Athletic Director.
Golf Competes Well in Two Tournaments
The Trinity College golf team placed sixth in the NESCAC Championships at Middlebury on Sept. 27 and 28. Senior co-captain Matthew Greason (North Bridgton, Maine) shot a two-round score of 151 to finish fifth overall in the NESCAC Championships. He shot a 73 in the first round on Saturday and a 78 on Sunday, while senior co-captain Peter Munsill (Peace Dale, R.I.) finished with a 157 to place 14th and Andrew Eastman (Milton, Mass.) shot a 159 for the Bantams
Goldman Reaches ITA Quarters for Women’s Tennis (3-2)
The Trinity College women’s tennis team competed in the Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships at Bowdoin from Sept. 27-29. The Bantams returned to dual match action with a 6-3 triumph over Brandeis on Oct. 6.
Junior Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles tourney in the ITA Regionals. Seeded No. 3 in the tournament, Goldman won in straight sets in the first round and in an exciting three-set match in the second round. Dreyfus, seeded No. 6 in the tourney, advanced to the second round in singles tourney, while senior co-captain Courtney Sargeant (North Attleboro, Mass.) lost in the opening round in three sets to the No. 8-seed. In doubles action, Dreyfus and Sergeant advanced to the second round with an 8-4 victory in their first match, but dropped an 8-2 decision in the second round. Sargeant won, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles and teamed with sophomore Diana Dreyfus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) for an 8-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles against Brandeis.
Trinity will visit Division I Hartford on Oct. 10 at 3 p.m., and will host Tufts on Oct. 12 at 11 a.m..
Women’s Soccer Blanks Connecticut College (4-3-1, 2-2-1)
The Trinity College women’s soccer team fell at conference opponent Williams, 3-1, on Sept. 28, and, 2-1, at Smith on Oct. 3. The Bantams rebounded to blank league foe Connecticut College, 1-0, on the road on Oct. 5.
At Williams, which was ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 22 in the nation entering the match, junior forward Lindsay Aquilina (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored the Bantam goal on a pass from Doyle. Sophomore goalies Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and Katherine Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.) combined for 12 saves, including seven by Mahoney in the second half.
Sophomore forward Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) netted the Bantam goal at Smith on an assist by junior midfielder Rachel Tracy (North Easton, Mass.). Mahoney had six stops for the Bantams Felis also scored the game’s only goal at Connecticut College, on a pass from Aquilina. Shields had five saves for the shutout victory.
Trinity, coached by Michael Smith, is currently tied for fifth place in the NESCAC with a 2-2-1 league record. Sophomore forward Nicole Mauger (East Bridgewater, Mass.) is third in the NESCAC in assists with 0.40 per game (2 in 5 games), while Shields is fourth in the NESCAC in saves with 5.50 per game (33) and fifth in GAA at 1.30. Sophomore midfielder Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) is fifth in the NESCAC in goals with 0.75 per game (6) and sixth in scoring at 1.63 points per contest (13). Mauger is seventh in the league in scoring with 1.60 points per game (8 in 5 games). Mauger is tied for seventh in the conference in goals with 0.60 per game (3 in 5 games), while junior back Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury, Conn.) is tied for fourth on the NESCAC assist list with 0.38 per contest (3), and freshman midfielder Kristen Geiger (Canterbury, N.H.) is ninth in the league in assists with 0.33 per game (2 in six games).
Trinity will host NESCAC rival Tufts, ranked No. 9 in New England, Oct. 12 at 11 a.m.
Hollis Makes All-Tournament for Volleyball (6-10, 1-2)
The Trinity College volleyball team downed Eastern Connecticut, 3-2, on Sept. 25, before dropping a 3-1 match against Smith and a 3-0 decision against Gordon in the Amherst Invitational Tournament on Sept. 27. On Sept. 28 at Amherst, Trinity lost to Muhlenberg, 3-1, but rallied to blank Westfield State, 3-0. Trinity lost, 3-1, against Williams College in a non-conference match on Oct. 1, before blanking Mount Holyoke, 3-0, in the Wesleyan Invitational on Oct. 4. Trinity dropped a pair of 3-0 decisions in the Wesleyan Tourney, against Smith and Wesleyan, on Oct. 5.
Freshman outside hitter Lucy Hollis (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) totaled 16 kills and 20 digs against Eastern Connecticut, while senior co-captain setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) had 41 assists, and sophomore Charlotte Grassi (Chevy Chase, Md.) contributed 15 kills and 18 digs. After the losses to Smith and Gordon, which was undefeated and ranked No. 3 in New England entering the match, Horton notched 61 assists and four aces in the two matches the next day. She had 36 assists and two aces, while sophomore outside hitter Kate Hunter (Ross, Calif.) chipped in with eight kills and three aces, and Hollis made 12 kills. Horton recorded 25 assists, two aces, and three kills against Westfield State, while Hollis added 12 kills and two blocks, and freshman Irena Tsvetkova (Sofia, Bulgaria) recorded seven service aces.
Against Williams, Hollis had team-highs of 14 digs and 13 kills, along with three blocks, while Horton added 35 assists and Hunter added seven kills, two aces, and three blocks. At the Wesleyan Invitational, Hollis had 10 kills and 19 digs against Mount Holyoke. The next day, Horton recorded 20 assists, while Grassi notched 10 kills and four blocks, and Hollis added 17 digs against Smith. In the Wesleyan match, Hunter had eight kills and 10 digs and Hollis, who graced the All-Tournament squad, had five kills and 16 digs
Trinity, coached by Angela Mills, is currently tied with Bowdoin for eighth place in the NESCAC with a 1-2 league record. Trinity is second in the NESCAC in digs with 19.15 per game and third in blocks with 2.91 per game. Hollis is tied for fourth in the NESCAC in digs with 4.29 per game (206), and classmate Chelsea Lake (Minneapolis, Minn.) is sixth with 4.07 per game (171). Junior co-captain Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) is tied for ninth in the league in blocks with 0.85 per game (41), and Horton is ninth in the conference in assists with 8.00 per game (384). Hollis was named to the NESCAC honor roll for the last three weeks. She has totaled 52 kills, five aces, 65 digs, and three blocks in the four matches and 56 kills and 63 digs in the squad’s next five matches.
Trinity will visit Western New England on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., and will host the second NESCAC Seeding Tournament on Oct. 4 and 5. The Bantams will face Bates and Wesleyan, which is ranked No. 8 in New England, on Oct. 4 and battle Bowdoin and Colby on Oct. 5.
Cross Country Teams Race at Keene
The Trinity College men’s and women’s cross country teams placed fourth and third, respectively, in the Keene State Invitational on Oct. 5.
Women’s sophomore Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) finished third overall in the women’s race at Keene, while senior co-captain Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) led the men’s squad to a fourth place showing, finishing seventh overall. Kane finished with a time of 18:57, while senior co-captain Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.) was fifth with a time 19:17. Fellow senior co-captain Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, Mass.) came in ninth at 19:32 for the Bantams. Emord came across the finish line with a time of 26:22, while classmate Ryan Lerner (Manchester, Conn.) was 26th at 27:32.
The Trinity women are ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 18 in the nation (www.raceberryjam.com), while the Bantam men’s squad is ranked No. 7 in New England.
