Women’s X-Country Wins Meet,
 Bak Earns Award and Breaks Record

The Trinity College women’s cross country team won the Mass.-Dartmouth Invitational on Sept. 21, while the Bantam men’s squad finished second in the meet.

Men’s senior co-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) finished first overall in the men’s race with a College record time of 24:39.17 at Mass.-Dartmouth. Bantam sophomore Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) finished fifth overall in the women’s race. Junior Karen Roy (Ashford, Conn.) came in ninth with a time of 18:28.92 and senior co-captain Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.) was 10th at 18:29.90. Senior co-captain Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) finished third overall for the Trinity men with a time of 25:30.25. Bak was named as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Performer of the Week for the second time in three weeks for his record-breaking effort at Mass.-Dartmouth

Junior forward Lindsay Aquilina (Williamsville, N.Y.) and sophomore midfielder Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) each scored a pair of goals against Coast Guard. Bantam freshman forward Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, Conn.) chipped in with two assists, and sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Mahoney (Wellesley, Mass.) stopped seven shots in her season debut.

Against Colby, junior Courtney Doyle (West Simsbury, Conn.) led a well-balanced offensive attack with two goals and two assists. Doyle has adjusted smoothly from forward to back for the Bantams this fall. Aquilina and sophomores Leah Felis (Stowe, Vt.) and Nicole Mauger (East Bridgewater, Mass.) also scored, as Trinity pummeled the Mules with 41 shots in the game. Mauger added an assist. Trinity sophomore goalkeepers Brenna Shields (Cutchogue, N.Y.) and Mahoney combined for seven saves and a shutout. Mauger scored the lone goal for the Bantams against Bates on a pass from freshman midfielder Jessica Hanson (West Granby, Conn.), while Shields had six saves in goal.

Trinity, coached by Michael Smith, is currently tied with Tufts and Williams for fifth place in the NESCAC with a 1-1-1 league record. The Bantams are third in the NESCAC in offense with 3.00 goals per game. Freshman midfielder Kristen Geiger (Canterbury, N.H.) leads the NESCAC in assists with 0.67 per game (two in three games), while Shields is fourth in the NESCAC in saves 5.00 per game (2) and Mahoney is tied for sixth in the conference in saves with 4.50 per game (9). Felis is tied for sixth in the NESCAC in goals with 0.80 per game (4), and Doyle, Mauger, and Buzzell are all tied for seventh in the league in assists with 0.40 per game (two apiece). Felis is also tied for eighth in the conference in scoring with 1.80 points per game (9), while Doyle and Mauger are both tied for 10th on the NESCAC scoring list with 1.60 points per contest (8 each). Doyle was named to the NESCAC honor roll for her outstanding play against Colby.

Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Williams, ranked No. 4 in New England and No. 23 in the nation, on Sept. 28.

Men’s Soccer Routs Colby (2-1-1, 2-0-1)

The Trinity College men’s soccer team dropped a 5-2 decision at Coast Guard on Sept. 17, but rebounded to shut out NESCAC rival Colby, 4-0, on Sept. 21.

At Coast Guard, senior co-captain forward Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass) and freshman midfielder Alan Shilling (South Brunswick, N.J.) scored for the Bantams. Shilling also assisted Sandell,along with junior back Tim Cross (Marblehead, Mass.), on Trinity’s first goal.

Junior goalkeeper Michael Doherty (Marshfield, Mass.) made four saves to record the shutout and classmate John Klaus (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored a pair of goals with an assist against Colby. Senior co-captain Peter Zoppi (Cheshire, Conn.) and Cross contributed their first goals of the season for the Bantams.

Trinity, coached by Eddie Mighten, is currently in second place in the NESCAC with a 2-0-1 league record. Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Burns (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Doherty are ranked 1-2 in the NESCAC with 6.00 saves per game (12) and 5.67 saves per game (17), respectively. Shilling is tied for the league lead in assists with 1.00 per game (4), while Sandell is tied for fifth in assists with 0.50 per game (2), tied for sixth in scoring with 2.00 points per game (8), and tied for eighth in goals with 0.75 per game (3). Klaus was named to the NESCAC honor roll for his outstanding play against Colby.

Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Williams, ranked No. 3 in New England and No. 17 in the nation, on Sept. 28.

Women’s Soccer Off To Great Start (3-1-1, 1-1-1)

The Trinity College women’s soccer team defeated Coast Guard on Sept. 18 and won its first NESCAC game of the season, 5-0, against Colby on Sept. 21. The Bantams lost their first contest of the season, 3-1, against league foe Bates on Sept. 22.

Women’s Tennis Falls at Williams (1-2)

The Trinity College women’s tennis team lost at Williams, 7-2, on Sept. 21. At Williams, sophomore Diana Dreyfus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) won a thrilling three-set match at the No. 2 singles position. Bantam senior co-captain Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.) and junior Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) posted an 8-6 triumph at No. 2 doubles.Trinity will host Wesleyan on Wed., Sept. 25, and will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships at Bowdoin on Sept. 27-29.

Golf Competes Well in Two Tournaments

The Trinity College golf team finished second in the Worcester Tech Invitational on Sept. 18 and 13th in the Williams Invitational on Sept. 21 to open the 2002-03 campaign. Senior co-captain Matthew Greason (North Bridgton, Maine) shot a team-low round of 76 at Worcester Tech, while fellow senior co-captain Peter Munsill (Peace Dale, R.I.) shot a 78 and classmate Jon Martis (Pepper Pike, Ohio) shot a 79 for the Bantams. Greason and junior Andrew Eastman (Milton, Mass.) each shot a team-low round of 75 at Williams to tie several others for 28th overall. Trinity will compete in the NESCAC Championships on Sept. 28 and 29 at Middlebury College.

Volleyball Splits Four Matches (3-4, 1-2)

The Trinity College volleyball team blanked St. Joseph (Conn.), 3-0, on the road on Sept. 17 but dropped a 3-0 decision in its NESCAC opener against Amherst at Connecticut College on Sept. 20. The Bantams fell, 3-2, against Tufts in a league contest on Sept. 21 but rallied to upend NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 3-1, later in the day. Both matches on Sept. 21 took place at Connecticut College.

Senior co-captain setter Christine Horton (San Marino, Calif.) led a balanced effort with 21 assists and five digs at St. Joseph. Bantam freshman outside hitter Lucy Hollis (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) contributed 10 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Kate Hunter (Ross, Calif.) had eight kills and 10 digs to go along with three aces.

Against Amherst, Hunter had five kills and six blocks in a losing effort, while Hollis added 10 kills, and Horton dished out 13 assists. Hunter totaled 16 kills in each match against Tufts and Connecticut College. Horton had 52 assists, and Hollis contributed 21 kills. Junior co-captain middle blocker Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led the way against Connecticut College with nine kills and seven solo blocks, while Hollis notched 12 kills.

Trinity, coached by Angela Mills, is currently tied for seventh place in the NESCAC with a 1-2 league record. Trinity leads the NESCAC in digs with 17.71 per game. Hollis is third in the NESCAC in digs with 4.59 per game (133), while Walker is tied for sixth in the league in blocks with 0.97 per game, and Horton is eighth in the conference in assists with 8.07 per game. Freshman defensive specialist Chelsea Lake (Minneapolis, Minn.) is eighth in the NESCAC in digs with 3.56 per game (89). Hollis was named to the NESCAC honor roll after totaling 52 kills, five aces, 65 digs, and three blocks in the four matches. Trinity will host Eastern Connecticut on Sept. 25 and compete in the Amherst Invitational on Sept. 27 and 28. The Bantams will play Smith and Gordon on the 27th and opponents to be determined on the 28th.

Field Hockey Struggles to Find Goals (0-5, 0-3)

The Trinity College field hockey team lost at Keene State, 3-0, on Sept. 19 before falling short against NESCAC rival Colby, 1-0, in overtime on Sept. 21. The Bantams lost to league foe Bates, 6-1, on Sept. 22.

At Keene State, which was ranked No. 19 in the nation entering the game, Bantam junior goalie Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio) had 10 saves and held Keene State scoreless in the second half.
Gillespie made six saves in goal against Colby, while the defensive front of senior co-captains Susan Hoppock (Chevy Chase, Md.) and Jennifer Rieg (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), junior Meriden Daly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomore Ayres Heller (Bethesda, Md.) held Colby to just five shots..

Hoppock scored the Bantam goal against Bates, while freshman goalie Courtney Bergh (West Pennington, N.J.) made seven saves and held the Bobcats scoreless for the final 16 minutes off the bench.

Trinity, coached by Anne Parmenter, is currently in 10th place in the NESCAC with an 0-3 league record. Gillespie is third in the NESCAC with a 8.60 saves per game. Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Williams on Sept. 28.
