Player of the Week Burnett Leads Women’s Lacrosse (6-0) To Perfect Start

The Trinity College women’s lacrosse opened its season with a 23-2 win against Dickinson on March 18 in Orlando, Fla., and went on to down Plymouth State, 13-5, on March 20, and Babson, 15-3, on March 22.

All three games were played at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The Bantams won its NESCAC opener, 17-6, at Connecticut College on March 26, and trounced Division II St. Michael’s, 18-4, in its first home game on March 28, before winning at league foe Tufts, 9-5, on March 30.

Against Dickinson, senior tri-captain attack Anna Sullivan (Brookline, Mass.) scored a game-high six goals, while freshman attack Bea Gratry (Hunting Valley, Ohio) had five goals in her collegiate debut, and senior tri-captain attack Ashley Taylor (Washington, D.C.) added two goals and two assists for the Bantams. Freshman Tracy Nesbit (Wellesley, Mass.) netted two goals and an assist in her collegiate debut, while classmates Julia Gomez (Pennington, N.J.), Katy Byron (Weston, Conn.), and Liz d’Entremont (Winchester, Mass.) each began their careers with goals.
Senior tri-captain goalkeeper Kelly Jo Burnett (Pennington, N.J.) made 12 saves and allowed just one goal in the second half against Plymouth State. Sullivan and Gratry scored four goals apiece for, while junior attack Laura Davis (Bethesda, Md.) added two goals and Taylor notched a goal and two assists. Sullivan added a pair of assists.

Sullivan notched five goals and two assists in the Babson game, while junior midfielder Liz Miller (Weston, Mass.) added a season-high four goals, Taylor notched two goals and three assists, Gratry recorded three goals and one assist for the Bantams. Burnett made eight saves and held the Beavers scoreless in the second half.

At Connecticut College, Gratry netted five goals and added two assists, Sullivan scored three times, and Taylor chipped in two goals and three assists. Junior midfielder Katelyn Bowman (Summit, N.J.) and sophomore Elizabeth Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I.) each picked up a pair of scores, and Burnett stopped eight shots in goal.

Miller netted four goals and added two assists versus St. Michael’s, while Sullivan scored four goals and one assist, Gratry tallied two goals and one assist, Bowman added two goals.

At Tufts, Davis scored four goals and Burnett made 12 saves to earn the win in goal.

Burnett was named as the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week and the ECAC Division III New England Player of the Week for the week ending March 31, after yielding just 15 goals in three Trinity wins. She has 50 saves, 25 goals allowed, a 4.92 GAA, and a .667 save percentage for the year.

Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, is currently in second place in the NESCAC with a 2-0 league record. Sullivan leads the league in scoring with 23 goals and seven assists for 30 points, while Gratry is third with 20 goals and six assists for 26 points, and Taylor is fifth with eight goals and a league-high 16 assists for 24 points. Burnett’s 4.92 GAA is ranked second in the conference.

The Bantams are ranked No. 20 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III national poll. Trinity will host NESCAC rival Amherst, ranked No. 2 in the IWLCA poll and the Warrior/Inside Lacrosse Division III national poll, on April 3, and league foe Colby, ranked No. 19 in the IWLCA poll and No. 18 in the Inside Lacrosse poll, on April 6.

Softball (2-11, 0-2) Struggles Early

The Trinity College softball team lost, 16-14, against Lasell and, 7-4, against Oneonta State on March 18, and fell, 12-2, against Keene State and, 5-4, against Wesleyan on March 20 during the first half of their spring break trip to Florida. The Bantams dropped a 6-0 decision against St. Lawrence and a 3-1 game against Mass.-Dartmouth on March 21, before blanking Slippery Rock, 1-0, and losing to Grinnell, 4-0, in their final day of games down south on March 22. Trinity returned to Hartford with a 1-0 loss to Smith in its home opener on March 28, and was swept in a twinbill, 2/2-19/9, in its NESCAC East opener at Tufts on March 30.

Junior shortstop Laura Heath (Windsor Locks, Conn.) had six hits in the games against Lasell and Oneonta State. Sophomore right-hander Lauren McDowell (Chilmark, Mass.) took the loss for Trinity on the mound to fall to 0-2.

Against Keene State and Wesleyan, junior first baseman Maureen Heneghan (Windsor, Conn.) went a combined 6-for-7, and freshman catcher Sarah Hoyle (Ansonia, Conn.) added a single and a double in the Wesleyan game.

Freshman right-hander Marion Protano (Malalapan, N.J.) pitched a six-hitter in a losing effort against Mass.-Dartmouth, and McDowell went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits, versus St. Lawrence. Trinity freshman right-hander Katherine Hunter (Ross, Calif.) tossed a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the Slippery Rock game.

Against Smith, Heath collected a single and Hunter tossed a three-hitter in a losing effort.

Senior Clare Bullock (Columbia, S.C.) had the Bantams’ only hit in the first game at Tufts, while Protano and Heath had two singles apiece in the nightcap.

Heneghan was named to the NESCAC honor roll for the week ending on March 24, after batting .471 (16-34) with eight runs and eight steals.

Trinity, coached by Tami Hyde, is currently in fifth place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division at 0-2. The Bantams will host Clark on April 2 and visit Coast Guard on April 4, before welcoming NESCAC East rival Bates for a doubleheader on April 6.

Tidmarsh Earns Player of the Week for Baseball (12-3)

The Trinity College baseball team split doubleheaders with St. Lawrence, 6/9-7/3, and Plymouth State, 13/7-18/6, on March 19 and 21, respectively, in Fort Myers, Fla. The Bantams finished their spring break trip south with a 1/18-13/1 split against Southern Maine on March 23, before downing Coast Guard, 12-8, in its home opener on March 27, and sweeping a three-game series in their first NESCAC East action against Bowdoin on March 29 and 30. Trinity, which downed Bowdoin by scores of, 9-0, 13-4, and 11-3, also won at Worcester Tech, 10-5, on April 1.

Junior second baseman Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in the second game against St. Lawrence, while freshman infielder Jeff Natale (Hamden, Conn.) was 2-for-2. Freshman right-hander Mark Tremblay (Hooksett, N.H.) won his collegiate debut on the mound, combining with junior righty Carlos Resto (Framingham, Mass.) on a five-hitter. Resto pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn his first career save. In the first game, Senior Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.), junior third baseman Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.), and freshman catcher Andrew Fries (Dublin, Ohio) all homered (the first of Fries’ career). Mahoney worked six innings, allowing four runs, in his collegiate debut on the mound.

Piantek went 5-for-8 and homered in both versus Plymouth State, while senior right-hander Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.) went the distance in the second game, allowing seven hits and pitching four scoreless frames to close the game. Fries homered for the second time in three games and Natale was 2-for-2, including his first career home run for the Bantams.

Against Southern Maine, ranked No. 7 in the nation, senior shortstop and co-captain Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.), went 2-for-4 in the opening game loss. In the second game, Spanos was 3-for-4 with four RBI, Dorr scored two runs while going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI. Senior outfielder Alan Andreini (Greenwich, Conn.) was 3-for-3 with three runs, Mahoney who was 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, and Piantek finished the day at 2-for-4 with a pair of runs. Sophomore right-hander Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) pitched a complete game for the win.

Mahoney recorded his first career victory on the mound and belted a three-run homer with the bat against the Coast Guard Academy. Mahoney, who did not walk a batter in six innings, was plagued by injuries that had kept him off the hill for three seasons. Senior first basemen Nick Callini (Westfield, Mass.) enjoyed a perfect day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks, and Spanos added two hits and three runs.

In the first game against Bowdoin, Tidmarsh tossed a five-hit shutout with nine strikeouts, while Spanos junior righty Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in 14 innings pitched between them in the next two games. Spanos fanned eight batters in eight innings of work to earn his third win in as many starts.

Tidmarsh was named as the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week for the week ending March 31, after allowing one run and 16 hits in 23 innings with five walks and 19 strikeouts. Tidmarsh tossed two shutouts and has a 3-0 record on the mound.

Trinity, coached by Bill Decker, is in first place in the NESCAC East with a 3-0 division record, and has the best overall record in the NESCAC at 12-3. Tidmarsh is ranked second in the NESCAC with a 0.39 ERA, while Piantek is sixth in the league with a .453 batting average, and Andreini is ninth with a .429 average.

Trinity is ranked No. 4 in the New England Division III Coaches Poll. The Bantams will host NESCAC East rival Bates on April 5 and for a doubleheader on April 6.

Men’s Lacrosse (1-4, 1-1) Splits First Two in NESCAC

The Trinity College men’s lacrosse team lost at Lynchburg, 18-7, on March 19 and to Salisbury, 15-7, on March 21. The Bantams won their home opener, 15-8, in its first NESCAC contest on March 27 against Connecticut College, but dropped an 11-5 decision against league foe Tufts on March 30.

Senior middie Peter Rogers (Southington, Conn.) had two goals and an assist at Lynchburg, which was ranked No. 18 in the nation entering the game, while senior tri-captain attackman Sean Rohan (South Hadley, Mass.) posted two scores and senior goalie Eric Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) made 10 saves. Bantam freshman midfielder John Thach (Berwyn, Pa.) netted his first career goal. Junior attackman Ravi Pillay (Church Falls, Va.) had a goal and two assists at Salisbury, which was ranked No. 8 in the nation entering the game.

Against Connecticut College, which was ranked No. 6 in New England entering the game, sophomore attackman James Skiff (Portland, Maine) scored four goals, Pillay netted two goals and assisted on three others, and Rohan added two goals. Bantam sophomore defender Peter Kennedy (Darien, Conn.) found the net twice, for the first and second goals of his collegiate career. Rohan and Peace each scored twice, while Bantam senior Eric Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) had 14 stops in net against Tufts, which was ranked No. 10 in New England entering the game.

Trinity, coached by Brian Silcott, is currently tied with Bates and Williams for fifth place in the NESCAC at 1-1. The Bantams are also ranked No. 12 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III poll. Trinity will play at Eastern Connecticut, ranked No. 5 in New England, on April 3 and at NESCAC rival Colby, ranked No. 4 in New England, on April 3.

Trinity Track and Field Squads Begin Outdoor Season

The Trinity College men’s and women’s outdoor track and field finished 1st and 4th, respectively, in the Disney Showcase in Orlando, Fla. on March 23. The Bantams returned to New England and each team finished second at the Connecticut College Invitational.

Freshmen Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.) and Patty Allen (South Setauket, N.Y.) won the 3,000-meter run and the discus throw, while junior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) and junior Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) won the 800-meter run and the 3,000-meter run at Connecticut College. Kane finished the 3,000 meters in 11:45.7, while Allen flung the discus 37.18 meters. Bak finished the 800 meters in 1:56.6 and Emord crossed the finish line in the 3,000 meters at 15:39.3.

The men’s and women’s outdoor track and field season will host the annual Bantam Invitational on April 6.
