Cross Country Boasts Two All-Americans on the Men’s Squad

The Trinity College men’s and women’s cross country teams had three representatives between them in the NCAA Division III National Championships at Augustana (Ill.) on Nov. 17. Junior tri-captains Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) and Jim Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.) qualified for the men’s team and Christina Kane (Springfield, Mass.), the first ever freshman to qualify from Trinity, represented the women’s squad.

 

 

Junior tri-captain Ryan Bak earned All-American honors this fall.

At the National Championships, Bak finished 16th overall with a College-record time of 24:39 and Emord came in close behind at 24:45 to finish 23rd overall. Both were earned All-American honors as one of the top 25 overall finishers. Both Bak and Emord eclipsed the previous Trinity record time of 24:47, set in 1990 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass, and both finished higher than any previous Bantam men’s runner ever had at Nationals. Kane finished 86th with a time of 18:28.

The Trinity men, coached by George Suitor, finished the season as the No. 6 team in New England, while the women finished as the No. 5 team in New England. Men’s senior tri-captain Steven Napier (Blue Bell, Pa.) finished his career with an injury-plagued season, but helped the 2000 squad qualify for the only NCAA Division III National Championship meet in its history. He posted a career-best time of 27:45 in the NCAA Division III New England Championships in 2000. Women’s senior co-captain Caroline Leary (Bedford, Mass.) also suffered through an injury in her final campaign. Leary had posted a career-best time in the NCAA Division III New England Championships last fall as well, at 19:42.

Juniors Ryan Lerner (Manchester, Conn.) and Steven Coakley (South Windsor, Conn.), sophomores Jonathan Drappi (West Boylston, Mass.) and Geoff Long (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.), and freshman James Sullivan (Sterling, Mass.) rounded out the top seven for the majority of Trinity’s meets this fall. Lerner, Sullivan, and Coakley posted career-best times of 25:50, 26:23, and 25:51, respectively, at the Mass.-Dartmouth Invitational. Drappi and Long saved their best for last, finishing the NCAA Division III New England Championship race with career-best times of 26:06 and 28:07, respectively.

Junior co-captain Leeann Rheaume (Pittsfield, Mass.), junior Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.), sophomores Kristina DePeau (Stafford, Conn.) and Karen Roy (Ashford, Conn.), and freshman Shannon Brennan (East Longmeadow, Mass.) joined Kane as the top seven women’s runners. Rheaume, DePeau, Klein, and Brennan posted career-best times, 18:02, 18:27, 19:10, and 19:22, respectively, at the Mass.-Dartmouth Invitational with Rheaume’s performance resulting in the highest Trinity time of the season. Kane’s career-best time of 18:15 at the NCAA Division III New England Championships put her in the Nationals, and Roy ran her fastest career race at the New England meet with a time of 18:52.

Men’s Basketball (4-1) Wins Four Straight

The Trinity College men’s basketball team opened the season with an 82-75 loss against Adrian in the first round of the Scarlet Raider Tip-Off Classic at Rutgers-Newark on Nov. 16, but defeated New York City Tech, 91-83, in the consolation round the next day. The Bantams won at Eastern Connecticut, 85-77, on Nov. 20 and defeated Western Connecticut, 74-66, in their home opener on Nov. 27. Trinity also downed Coast Guard, 65-55, on the road on Dec. 1.

Senior tri-captain forward Bryan Dion (East Haven, Conn.) earned a spot on the NESCAC honor roll for the week ending Nov. 18 after averaging 21.5 points and 11.0 rebounds against Adrian and New York City Tech, although he was edged out by fellow senior tri-captain Colin Tabb (Somers, Conn.) for the all-tournament nod. Against Adrian, Tabb led all scorers with 28 points, sinking eight out of 13 shots from the field, and Dion had 17 points and nine boards. Dion scored 26 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against New York City Tech, while Tabb totaled 24 points and junior forward Corey Days (Baltimore, Md.) had 10 points and eight boards in his first career start.

Tabb was named to the league honor roll for the week ending Nov. 25, after scoring 30 points on 10-for-19 shooting against Eastern Connecticut. He also had nine rebounds and five assists in the game, while Dion had 21 points, 11 boards, and two blocks. Bantam freshman guard John Halas (White Plains, N.Y.) added 15 points off the bench.

Against Western Connecticut, Tabb had game-highs 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Dion totaled 18 points and nine boards, and Halas scored a career-high 17 points off the bench. Trinity freshman guard Jesse Farrell (Minneapolis, Minn.) added seven assists off the bench as well. Dion totaled 16 points and a game-high 13 caroms against Coast Guard, and Tabb led all scorers with 20 points. Tabb was named to the NESCAC honor roll for his play in the two victories, averaging 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 2.5 assists for the week.

Trinity, coached by Stan Ogrodnik, currently has the fifth-best overall record in the NESCAC at 4-1. Dion leads the league in rebounding at 11.6 per game, is third in the NESCAC lead in blocks with 1.4 per game, and sixth in the conference in scoring at 19.0 ppg. Tabb is tied for the league-lead in scoring with 24.4 ppg, fourth in free throw shooting with a 82.9 percentage (29-35), and eighth in rebounding with 8.2 per contest. Days is second in the NESCAC with 2.2 blocked shots per game.

McCloskey Powers Women’s Basketball (3-1) To Quick Start

The Trinity College women’s basketball team rebounded from a season-opening, 86-78, overtime loss to Plymouth State in the first round of the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 17 to defeat Juniata, 91-90, in the tourney’s consolation round the next day. The Bantams then trounced Albertus Magnus, 75-52, in their home opener on Nov. 20 and Coast Guard, 68-44, on the road on Nov. 28.

Junior center Kate McCloskey (Uxbridge, Mass.) was named as the NESCAC Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 18, after earning all-tournament honors at the Swarthmore Tip-Off. She had 18 points and 14 rebounds against Plymouth State, joining three teammates in double figures in scoring. Senior forward McKenzie Corby (Bethel, Conn.) led the Bantams in the Plymouth State game with 19 points, while freshman forward Michelle McCaffrey (West Springfield, Mass.) had 14 points and 14 boards in her collegiate debut, and junior guard Shannon Herold (Downers Grove, Ill.) added 13 points off the bench.

McCloskey set a new College record with 44 points the next day against Juniata, along with 18 boards. McCloskey made 13 out of 18 shots from the field and 18 out of 21 shots from the foul line. Senior forward Kate Toman (Santa Margarita, Calif.) added 12 points off the bench for the Bantams.Against Albertus Magnus, McCaffrey paced Trinity with 12 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.

Trinity, coached by Maureen Pine, is currently tied with Bates for the fourth-best overall record in the NESCAC at 3-1. McCloskey leads the league in scoring at 24.0 ppg, and is tied for the NESCAC lead in blocks with 1.3 per game. She is also second in the conference in rebounding with 11.5 per game and field goal percentage at 57.1 percent. Dullea is second in the league in assists with 5.8 per contest, while McCaffrey is tied for third in the NESCAC in rebounding at 9.5 per game and senior guard Alison Hadden (Drexel Hill, Pa.) is tied for sixth in assists with 4.0 per game.

Men’s Ice Hockey (4-2, 3-1) Goes On Scoring Rampage

The Trinity College men’s ice hockey team lost its season opener at Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East rival Salem State, 3-2, on Nov. 16, but rebounded to capture its first win of the year at ECAC East foe Southern Maine the next night, 6-2. The Bantams dropped a 4-1 decision to Connecticut College in the first round of the Spurrier Tournament at Wesleyan on Nov. 24, but downed Amherst in the consolation, 7-4, on Nov. 25. Trinity shut out ECAC East opponent Mass.-Boston, 10-0, on Nov. 30 in its home opener, and blanked ECAC East rival Babson, 7-0, the next afternoon.

Against Salem State, sophomore forward Tim Joncas (Branford, Conn.), a transfer from Wesleyan, made his Bantam debut with a goal and an assist. Senior co-captain forward Matt Greason (North Bridgeton, Maine) collected two assists and classmate Geoff Faulkner (Westerville, Ohio) made 28 saves in a losing effort.

Senior defenseman Martins Lans (Carnikava, Latvia) earned a spot on the NESCAC honor roll for the week ending Nov. 18, after scoring a goal and two assists against Southern Maine and helping hold the Southern Maine offense to just 16 shots. Lans also had an assist at Salem State. Trinity freshman forward Ryan Stevens (Concord, N.H.) netted his first collegiate goal, which was also the game-winner, against Southern Maine, while Greason assisted on a pair of goals including the first career score for freshman forward Joseph Ori (Niles, Ill).

Joncas scored the team’s only goal against Connecticut College and freshman goalie Doug Kisielius (Park Ridge, Ill.) had 14 saves in his collegiate debut in goal. Sophomore forward Steven LaBrie (Springfield, Mass.) netted two goals, including the game-tying score, against Amherst, and senior co-captain forward Jeff Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) notched the game-winner. Stevens assisted on three goals, junior forward Greg O’Leary (Reading, Mass.) notched a goal and two assists, and Greason and senior defenseman Brian Fenwick (Birmingham, Mich.) had a goal and an assist apiece. Faulkner made 25 saves and held Amherst scoreless for the final 26 minutes to earn the victory in goal.

Greason was named as the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 2. He scored two goals and four assists against Mass.-Boston and two assists against Babson. Fenwick scored twice and assisted on a third goal against Mass.-Boston, while junior forward Andrew Halder (River Edge, N.J.) recorded his first career hat trick, O’Leary notched four assists, Stevens had a goal and two assists, and senior defenseman Mike Sayre (Keene, N.H.) assisted on a pair of goals. Faulkner made 22 saves to record the shutout, which also gave Head Coach John Dunham his 350th career victory. Dunham is currently fifth among active Division III coaches and seventh all-time in wins with a 351-258-21 career mark. Against Babson, Faulkner had 23 saves to notch his second straight shutout and extend his scoreless period streak to seven. Stevens powered the offense with two goals and assist, and O’Leary had a goal and two assists.

Trinity is currently tied with Hamilton for fourth place in the NESCAC with a 3-1 league record. Greason leads the league in scoring with four goals and a league-high 11 assists, while O’Leary is tied for fourth in the NESCAC in scoring with three goals and nine assists for 12 points. Faulkner is second in the league with a 1.25 GAA in net.

Women’s Ice Hockey (1-5, 1-5) Wins First Under Busniuk

The Trinity College women’s ice hockey team dropped its first five games, 7-0, against Bowdoin on Nov. 16, 4-0, against Colby on Nov. 17, 6-0, at Middlebury on Nov. 24, 7-0, at Williams on Nov. 25, and, 2-1, at Connecticut College on Nov. 30. To open the month of December, Trinity reversed the trend with a 4-1 triumph at Connecticut College.

Sophomore goalie Mimi MacKinnon (Glen Cove, N.Y.) earned a spot on the NESCAC honor roll for the week ending Nov. 18 for saving 99 shots in two games. After turning away 54 shots against Bowdoin, MacKinnon added 45 stops against Colby. She added 59 saves against Middlebury and 43 against Williams.

MacKinnon was named the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 2 after saving 85 shots, including 62 in Trinity’s win at Connecticut College, and yielding just three goals. The victory snapped an 18-game Bantam winless streak and gave first-year Head Coach Katie Busniuk her first career win at the helm. Bantam freshman forward Kristy Hadeka (Castleton, Vt.) scored her first career goal and added a second goal and an assist, while sophomore Jillian Nelsen (Albany, N.Y.) netted a goal and two assists on offense. The previous night against Connecticut College, MacKinnon had 23 saves and Bantam freshman Michelle O’Neil (westwood, Mass.) recorded her first career goal and the team’s first goal of the winter.

Women’s Squash (1-0) Wins Opener Against Williams

The Trinity College women’s squash team defeated Williams, 9-0, in its season opener on Dec. 1. In the match, freshmen Lynn Leong (Kota Bharu, Malaysia) and Meridy Vollmer (Cincinnati, Ohio) dominated their opponents to record their first career victories. Leong, playing at No. 2, and Vollmer, playing at No. 8, each allowed just one point scored against them in 3-0 wins.

Trinity, coached by Wendy Bartlett, is currently ranked as the No. 2 team in the nation. Sophomore Amina Helal (Manchester, England) is the No. 1-ranked player in the nation, while Leong is ranked No. 5, sophomore Pam Saunders (Harrare, Zimbabwe) is ranked No. 7, freshman Bronwyn Cooper (Harrare, Zimbabwe) is ranked No. 21, and junior Clare Austin (Banbury, England) is ranked No. 22. All won their first matches of the season against Williams.

Wrestling (1-2) Beats WNEC in Williams Classic

The Trinity College wrestling team finished 12th out of 17 teams in the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield on Nov. 17 to open the season, and won one out of three matches in the Williams Duals Classic on Dec. 1. The Bantams lost to NYU, 24-19, and host Williams, 24-16, but salvaged the day with a 38-10 triumph over Western New England.

In the Doug Parker Invitational, sophomore Michael Doros (East Hartford, Conn.) won three out of five matches to finish fourth in the 184-pound division, and junior All-American 141-pounder Mark Foresi (West Springfield, Mass.) went 3-2 in his five bouts. Trinity freshman Oded Carmi (Framingham, Mass.) made his collegiate debut with two wins at 184 pounds.

At the Williams Classic, Trinity sophomore Wesley Connell (Simsbury, Conn.) won three matches at 165 ponds to earn all-tournament honors, and freshman 157-pounder David Bucco (Paramus, N.J.) also posted three victories.

Swimming and Diving (M0-2, W0-2) Loses First Two Meets

The Trinity College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each lost at Bates in their season openers on Nov. 17 and to Brandeis in their home openers on Dec. 1. The Bantam women dropped a 160.5-94.5 decision at Bates and a 160-131 decision against Brandeis. The Trinity men lost, 206-58, at Bates and, 152-85, against Brandeis.

Against Bates, sophomore Julia Kaye (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and freshman Katherine Mortensen (Bedford, Mass.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke with times of 11:21.05 and 30.11, respectively. Kaye also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle at 59.05 s and Mortensen was also second in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:05.18. Bantam sophomore Elizabeth Stoker (Westwood, Mass.) won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles against Brandeis with times of 26.83 and 58.33, respectively.

For the men at Bates, senior captain Christian Sterling (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Chris Rorer (Villanova, Pa.) both finished second in two events. Sterling finished .09 seconds behind the first-place finisher in the 100-yard butterfly at 59.14, and :18.05 seconds behind the winner in the 1,000-yard freestyle at 10:50.19. Rorer posted second-place times of 30.03 in the 50-yard breaststroke and 1:05.29 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Indoor Track and Field Opens season at Wesleyan Relays

The Trinity College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams each opened the 2001-02 season at the Wesleyan Relays on Dec. 1. Trinity senior Nick Fox (Dublin, N.H.) won the shot put (47’01.750) for the men and senior tri-captain Jennifer Villa (West Hyannisport, Mass.) finished first in the triple jump (34’01.50 to highlight the women’s meet. Trinity boasted 11 first-place performances in the meet, including senior tri-captain Lauren Young (Old Saybrook, Conn.) in the women’s weight throw (34’11.250, freshman Ashley Yanyac (Old Saybrook, Conn.) in the women’s shot put (33’10.25), junior tri-captain Ryan Bak (Suffield, Conn.) in the men’s 5,000 meters (15:01.00), freshman Paris Farrell (Philadelphia, Pa.) in the 55 meter dash (6.64), and junior Josh Griffis (Templeton, Mass.) in the shot put (47’01.75).
