Baseball (13-1, 3-0) Breaks Out to Best Start Ever
The Trinity College baseball team followed up its best-ever 9-1 record on its spring break trip to Florida with four straight wins in its first week back in New England. The Bantams posted wins over Edgewood, 12-0, Salve Regina, 17-9, Messiah, 12-6, and Middlebury, 11-9, and swept St. John's (Minn.) 3/15-1/4, and Plymouth State, 5/10-4/3, in doubleheaders down south. Trinity split a twinbill against Roger Williams, 10/6-3/9, on its third day in Fort Myers, Fla., and won its final six games on the trip.
On March 28, Trinity won at Coast Guard, 5-4, and swept a three game series in its New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division opening weekend against Colby, winning, 7-2, on Mar. 31 and sweeping a pair of 5-4 extra-inning games on Apr. 1.
The pitching was outstanding in Florida, led by the right-handed brother tandem of senior co-captain Jarrett Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.) and sophomore Jonah Bayliss (Williamstown, Mass.). Both went 2-0, and Jarrett collected a save while totaling 12 strikeouts in 12.2 innings with a 0.00 ERA. Jarrett pitched a seven-inning, two-hit complete game against St. John's giving him a College-record 23 wins in his Trinity career. Jarrett broke the previous record of 22 wins set by Joe Shannon in 1889.
Jonah totaled 11 innings with 10 strikeouts, senior co-captain right-hander Jack Richardson (Arlington, Va.) went 1-0 with 17 strikeouts in 11 innings, and freshman right-hander Kevin Tidmarsh (Meriden, Conn.) picked up a save in 10 innings with nine strikeouts and zero earned runs allowed.
Offensively in Florida, junior first baseman Nick Callini (Westfield, Mass.) batted a team-high .500 (15-30) with four doubles, 14 runs, and nine RBI. Junior shortstop Andrew Freimuth (Bristol, Conn.) drove in a team-high 17 RBI on the trip and belted four doubles and four home runs with a .436 batting average (17-39), while junior outfielder Alan Andreini (Greenwich, Conn.) batted .417 (15-36). Junior outfielder/first baseman Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) hit .429 (12-28) with four doubles and freshman catcher Tony O'Shaughnessy (Manchester, N.H.) had six hits in 12 at-bats with four RBI in seven games.
Against Coast Guard, the elder Bayliss pitched six innings, striking out nine, and Tidmarsh allowed one hit and struck out five over the final three innings to give Head Coach Bill Decker his 200th career victory. With the win Decker's season record improved to 200-111 (.643) in 10-plus seasons.
Jonah Bayliss allowed three hits and one run with a career-high 16 strikeouts over eight innings in the first game against Colby. Jarrett Bayliss went all eight innings in the second game, allowing seven hits and striking out 11, and Richardson hurled an eight-inning, five-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the second game as the Bantams edged Colby in back-to-back extra-inning affairs.
Sophomore third baseman Kurt Piantek (Wallingford, Conn.) went 6-for 12 in the three-game series with two doubles and five RBI, while sophomore catcher Robert Dolliver (Norwich, Conn.) was 4-for-9 with two RBI and one double. Fellow sophomore Jayme Dorr (Osterville, Mass.) drove in the game-winning run in each extra-inning game on a sacrifice fly and a double.
Trinity is in first place in the NESCAC East Division with a 3-0 record in the league. Andreini is eighth in the NESCAC in hitting with a .412 average (21-51), while Jarrett Bayliss is third in earned run average at 1.57. Jonah Bayliss and Richardson are tied for ninth in the league in earned run average at 2.84.

Softball (0-11) Searches For First Win
The Trinity College softball team lost all 10 games during its spring break trip to Winter Garden, Fla., and dropped a 2-1 decision against Smith College in its home opener on March 29.
In Florida, the Bantams lost to Elmhurst, 5-1, and Millikin, 8-0, on March 18, to Eastern Connecticut, 15-2, and Wis.-River Falls, 4-3, on March 19, to Benedictine, 6-1, and Wis.-Eau Claire, 3-1, on March 21, to Coe, 5-0, and FDU-Madison, 10-1, on March 22, and to Springfield, 1-0, and Elmhurst, 9-1, on March 23.
Sophomore first baseman Maureen Heneghan (Windsor Locks, Conn.) paced the Bantam offense in Florida, batting .310 (9-for-29). Senior shortstop Tricia Mase (North Branford, Conn.) stole six bases in seven attempts and had a .231 batting average (6-for-26). Against Smith, sophomore right-hander Kristi McDermott (Barrington, R.I.) pitched a six-hitter, holding Smith scoreless over the first six innings.
Women's Lacrosse (4-3, 1-2) Wins Seven Sisters Title
The Trinity College women's lacrosse team lost its season opener, 17-8, to Goucher at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla. on Mar. 21, but rallied to post three victories in two days at the Seven Sisters Tournament at Haverford and become the first non-Seven Sisters institution to win the tourney.
The Bantams defeated Haverford, 17-7, and Swarthmore, 16-5, on March 24 and edged Wellesley, 10-9, in the finals on March 25. Trinity returned home but fell, 10-9, in its home and NESCAC opener to Connecticut College on March 27 and, 13-9, against Bates at MIT on March 29. The Bantams rallied to defeat previously-undefeated Tufts, 14-11, at home on March 31.
Against Goucher, which was ranked No. 19 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III poll at the time, junior midfielder Anna Sullivan (Boston, Mass.) had three goals and junior tri-captain attack Ashley Taylor (Washington, D.C.) notched a goal and an assist. Junior goalie Kelly Jo Burnett (Pennington, N.J.) had eight saves in her first career start.
Sullivan totaled 11 goals in the Seven Sisters tourney, including four in the finals against Wellesley, which was ranked No. 13 in the nation in the LaxPower Division III Ratings. Taylor had nine goals and six assists and sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Miller (Weston, Mass.) scored nine goals with two assists, including a career-high six against Swarthmore.
Burnett tallied 27 saves in the three games in the cage, playing in front of the solid starting defensive front of senior tri-captain Mary Jacobs (Malvern, Pa.), sophomore Eliza Hurd (Carlisle, Mass.), and freshman Katherine Boothby (Philadelphia, Pa.). Jacobs was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player for her outstanding play in the three Bantam wins.
Against Connecticut College, Taylor scored three goals and Sullivan and Miller added two goals apiece. In the Bates game, Taylor found the net four times and assisted on two other scores, while senior tri-captain forward Melissa Marlette (Buffalo, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist. Miller erupted for six goals against Tufts, matched by six assists for Taylor. Sullivan scored five goals in the game, while Burnett made 14 saves in goal.
Trinity, coached by Kara Tierney, is in sixth place in the 10-team NESCAC with a 1-2 league mark. The Bantams boast the league's top three scorers, led by Taylor in first with 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points, Sullivan in second with 21 goals and seven assists, and Miller in third with 19 goals and seven assists.
The Bantams are rated No. 20 nationally in the LaxPower Ratings. Trinity will visit NESCAC rival Amherst, ranked No. 1 in the nation in the IWLCA poll and No. 4 in the LaxPower Ratings, on Tue., Apr. 3. The Bantams will also face league foe Colby, ranked No. 23 in the IWLCA poll and No. 15 in the LaxPower Ratings, on Sat., Apr. 7 at Bates.
Men's Lacrosse (3-2, 1-1) Alternates Wins and Losses
The Trinity College men's lacrosse team won its season opener, 10-8, over Widener at Johns Hopkins on March 17, but lost a 10-7 game to Hamilton on March 19 in New Port Richey, Fla. before trouncing New England College, 19-4, in New Port Richey on March 22. The Bantams dropped their NESCAC opener, 10-8, at Connecticut College on March 28, and evened its league record with a 10-7 win at Tufts on March 31.
Against Widener, freshman attack James Skiff (Hollywood, Calif.) made his collegiate debut with five goals and an assist. Senior attack Rob Morse (Winchester, Mass.) added two goals and junior goalie Eric Wilson (West Hartford, Conn.) stopped 11 shots in his first career start.
In Florida, senior tri-captain Mark Tassie (Hopewell, N.J.) totaled seven goals and two assists in the two games, while Morse had five goals and two assists, and Wilson totaled 23 saves 105 minutes.
Against Connecticut College, Tassie and junior attackman Sean Rohan (South Hadley, Mass.) scored two goals apiece and sophomore attack Ravi Pillay (Bethesda, Md.) notched a goal and an assist. Wilson made a career-high 17 saves in goal.
Trinity, coached by Mike Darr, is in fifth place in the 10-team NESCAC with a 1-1 league record. Wilson is ranked third among NESCAC goalkeepers with an 8.06 Goals Against Average.
The Bantams are currently ranked No. 7 in the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division III poll. Trinity will host undefeated Eastern Connecticut, ranked No. 17 in the nation and No. 4 in New England, on Wed., April 4. This week's NEILA Top Ten:

Track Teams Compete in Makeshift Meet
The Trinity College women's and men's outdoor track and field teams were scheduled to compete in the Smith College Invitational, but the meet was canceled and the Bantams traveled to New London, Conn. for the quickly put together "not Smith" Invitational at Connecticut College on March 31.
Freshman Francis Vincent (East Lyme, Conn.) won three events with times of 11.1 s in the 100-meter dash and 22.4 s in the 200-meter dash, as well as a leap of 6.60 meters in the long jump. Vincent also finished second in the triple jump at 12.78 meters as the Trinity men placed third out of five teams.
Senior co-captains Amanda Rival (Berlin, Conn.) and Marisa Eddy (Los Angeles, Calif.) each won two events for the Bantam women in a fourth-place performance out of five teams. Rival won the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.4 s and the long jump at 5.21 meters, while Eddy took the 800-meter run in a time of 2:22.50 and the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:10.60.
Other top individual performances included first-place time of 57.5 s for freshman Chris Madison (Chatham, N.Y.) in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles and 15:40.00 in the 5,000-meter run for sophomore Ryan Lerner (Manchester, Conn.).
Men's Tennis (6-1) Has Usual Fast Start
The Trinity College men's tennis team added to its 2-0 fall record with a 3-1 mark during its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C., and downed Skidmore College, 7-0, at home on Mar. 31.
In South Carolina, the Bantams defeated Calvin, 7-0, on March 20 and lost to The South, 4-3, on March 21. On March 22, Trinity edged Bowdoin, 4-3, and blanked Hamilton, 7-0, on March 23. The South was ranked No. 24 in the nation and Bowdoin was No. 14 when Trinity faced them.
Senior co-captain and two-time All-American Rostyslav Orach (New York, N.Y.), sophomore Muammar Khan (Dhaka, Bangladesh), and freshman Richard Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario) each posted 3-0 singles records on the spring break trip. Freshman Scott Levy (Waban, Mass.) had a 3-1 record in Hilton Head, and teamed with Khan to go 3-1 in doubles.
Against Skidmore, five out of six Trinity singles players won in straight sets, including 6-0, 6-2 triumphs by Orach at No. 1 and Levy at No. 4. Freshman Csaba Godry (Budapest, Hungary) dominated his singles match, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, while Levy/Khan posted an impressive 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.
Trinity is currently ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division II East region and No. 11 in the nation. Orach is the No. 2 singles player in the East and No. 7 in the nation, while Lawrence is No. 4 in the East and No. 18 in the nation. Orach and Lawrence make up the No. 2 doubles tandem in the East and the No. 3 duo in the nation, while Levy/Khan is ranked No. 8 in doubles in the East.
