NESCAC Woes Continue for Women's Soccer (4-6-1, 1-5)

After defeating Smith College, 3-0, on October 4, the Trinity College women's soccer team suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses in New England Small College Athletic Conference contests in Maine on October7-8. The Bantams, coached by Michael Smith (fourth season), lost, 2-1, at Colby in double overtime and, 3-2, at Bowdoin.

Against Smith, junior Kerry Hood (Londonberry, NH) scored two goals and freshman Courtney Doyle (Simsbury, Conn.) scored one. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Bradley (Mansfield, Conn.) made a successful return from an injury, which had kept her out of three games, with nine saves and a shutout.

Over the weekend, Trinity lost at Colby on a goal in the 129th minute. Freshman Lindsay Aquilina (Buffalo, N.Y.) scored for Trinity on an assist from Hood. The next day at Bowdoin, the Bantams were a goal short again despite strong play from Bradley in goal with eight saves. Aquilina and fellow freshman Kate Salottolo (Bethel, Conn.) provided the Trinity scoring.

Trinity is currently tied with Connecticut College for eighth place in the NESCAC at 1-5. Aquilina is tied for first in the league in scoring with nine goals and an assist for 19 points, while Hood is eighth with five goals and four asissts for 14 points. Bradley was selected to the NESCAC honor roll, thanks to 23 saves in three games last week.

The Bantams will host league rival Tufts University, ranked No. 8 in New England, on Saturday, Oct. 14.

Men's Soccer (2-3-3, 1-3-1) Ties and Loses

The Trinity College men's soccer team tied NESCAC rival Colby College, 1-1, and dropped a 1-0 decision at league foe Bowdoin College on October 7 and 8.

Against Colby, sophomore Stuart Poole (Scarborough, Maine) found the net for game-tying goal in with 14:10 remaining in the game. Classmate Morgan Sandell (Cohasset, Mass.) recorded the assist on a cross. Senior tri-captain Tom Hambrick-Stowe (Lancaster, Pa.) continued his solid play in goal with three saves. Hambrick-Stowe totaled eight saves the next day at Bowdoin.

Trinity is currently in eighth place in the NESCAC at 1-3-1. Hambrick-Stowe is fifth in the league in goalkeeping with a 1.11 GAA.

Volleyball (8-12, 2-6) Beats Conn, Loses Three in the NESCAC

The Trinity College volleyball team hosted the second NESCAC seeding tournament of the 2000 season on October 6 and 7. On October 6, the Bantams, coached by Renee Najarian, lost, 3-0, against Amherst College and dropped a 3-0 decision against Tufts University in its first match on October 7. Trinity rebounded to defeat Connecticut College, 3-1, but lost, 3-0, to Wesleyan University in the nightcap.

In the win over Connecticut College, sophomore Isabelle Krusen (Tampa, Fla.) notched 12 kills, 17 digs, and four service aces, while classmate Christine Horton (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 47 assists.

Trinity is currently in ninth place in the NESCAC at 2-6. Krusen is second in the league in digs with 3.69 per game, while junior co-captain Kristin Hagan (San Francisco, Calif.) is third with 3.48 per game, and junior Beth Landry (Troy, Mich.) is ninth with 2.80 per game. Freshman Carolyn Walker (Winston-Salem, N.C.) is seventh in the NESCAC in blocks with 0.82 per game, followed by Landry at eighth with 0.77 per game. Hagan is ninth in the league in kills with 3.22 per game.

The Bantams will compete in the third and final NESCAC seeding tourney at Connecticut College on Saturday, Oct. 14. The Bantams will face Bates College, ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Division III New England rankings, BowdoinCollege, and Colby College in the tournament.

Martin's Return Almost Enough for Field Hockey (1-9, 0-6)

The Trinity College field hockey team lost, 3-0, at Amherst on October 4 and, 4-1, at NESCAC rival Colby College on October 7, but turned out its best performance of the season in a double overtime 1-0 loss at Bowdoin College on October 8.

Against Amherst, freshman goalkeeper Gwen Gillespie (Gates Mills, Ohio) gave a valiant effort with 12 saves, but she was replaced early in the Colby game for junior Jessica Martin (Fort Myers, Fla.) after allowing three goals. Martin, who had missed the first eight games of the 2000 campaign with an injury, debuted with 16 saves over 60 minutes. Sophomore Lindsay Peet (Stowe, Vt.) scored her first goal of the season against Colby Martin had an even better performance the following day at Bowdoin, stopping a College-record 27 shots in 97-plus minutes.

The Bantams are currently in 10th-place in the NESCAC with an 0-6 record. Martin was named the NESCAC Co-Player of the Week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Player of the Week for her outstanding performance. Martin totaled 43 saves in two games.

Cross Country Sweeps Eighth Annual Bantam Invitational

The Trinity College men's and women's cross country squads won both races at the Bantam Invitational on October 7 at Wickham Park in Manchester, Conn. The Trinity men boasted the top four runners, led by senior co-captain Todd Markelz (Homer, Alaska) in first place at 26:09.

Freshman Karen Roy (Ashford, Conn.) came in second overall for the women with a time of 20:04. Classmate Liz Brown (Belmont, Mass.) finished third at 20:05 and junior captain Caroline Leary (Bedford, Mass.) was third at 20:12. Three other Trinity harriers finished in the top ten of the women's field, including sophomore Kate Klein (Huntington, Vt.) in sixth at 20:20, junior Sarah Hackett (Stonington, Conn.) in eighth at 20:34, and freshman Kristina DePeau (Stafford, Conn.) in 10th at 20:48.

Sophomores James Emord (Bridgewater, Mass.), Ryan Lerner (Manchester, Conn.), and Steve Coakley (South Windsor, Conn.) finished 2-3-4 for the men with times of 26:51, 27:09, and 27:22, repectively.

Both Bantam cross country squads are ranked among the top 10 in New England. The women are tied with two teams at No. 8 and the men are No. 5 in the region. The men's harriers are also ranked No. 20 in NCAA Division III.

Women's Tennis (5-2) Wins Pair

The Trinity College women's tennis swept matches against the Division I University of Connecticut Huskies, 6-3, and NESCAC rival Bates College, 9-0.

Against Connecticut, senior co-captain Olga Bogatyrenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) had a productive day with a 6-0, 6-1 singles win at the No. 4 position and and 8-4 win with freshman Sarah Krueger (Burlington, Vt.) at No. 2 singles.

Junior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.) led the way against Bates with a dominant 6-1, 6-0, win at No. 3 singles and an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 doubles with sophomore partner Courtney Sargeant (Attleboro, Mass.). Sargeant also won in singles 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 2 position. Bogatyrenko leads Trinity with a 5-1 season record in singles and has 3-1 doubles mark with Krueger. Mate is 5-2 and Sargeant is 5-3 for the season.
