Bantams to Play Bowdoin in First Round at Williams

Hartford, Conn., May 7 -- The Trinity College women’s tennis team, which finished the 2001-02 dual match regular season with an 11-3 record, has qualified for its third consecutive NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament. The Bantams, coached by Wendy Bartlett (18th season, 128-74-1), will play Bowdoin at Williams on Fri., May 10 at noon. The winner will face Williams on Sat., May 11 for the opportunity to advance to the quarter-final round. The final three rounds will take place at Sweet Briar College in Virginia on May 17-22.

Trinity, which is ranked No. 4 in the Northeast region and No. 14 in the nation, most recently finished second in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships. Bowdoin is ranked No. 5 in the Northeast and No. 16 in the nation, while Williams is ranked No. 1 in both the Northeast and the nation.

Sophomore Diana Goldman (Milton, Mass.) has been the team’s No. 1 player all season, and is ranked as the region’s No. 6 singles player and No. 22 in the nation. Goldman, an All-NESCAC second team selection and NESCAC Rookie of the Year last season, owns a 15-8 record this season and a 31-16 career mark. She was named to the All-NESCAC First Team in singles and the all-league second team in doubles, along with junior partner Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.), this spring. Goldman and Huebner are 16-7 this season and 28-16 in their career as a doubles duo playing predominantly at No. 3.

Senior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.), junior co-captain Courtney Sargeant (North Attleboro, Mass.), Huebner, and sophomore Sarah Krueger (Burlington, Vt.) are veteran starters with a combined 51-23 singles record this year. Mate and Sargeant also combine to make up the Bantams’ No. 1 doubles team. Freshman Diane Dreyfus (Scarsdale, N.Y.) has emerged as a top player, posting a 13-6 singles record and a 9-1 doubles tally with Krueger as her partner. Classmate Brittany Olwine (Atlanta, Ga.) is also a valued contributor to the team with a 5-1 singles record.

Trinity edged Bowdoin, 5-4, on April 14 to close out the 2001-02 regular season, as Dreyfus, Huebner, and Krueger won in singles, and the doubles teams of Mate/Sargeant and Krueger/Dreyfus won their matches for the Bantams. Bowdoin boasts the No. 4 player in the Northeast and the No. 15 player in the nation, Alexis Bawden (Fairfield, Calif.). Williams downed Trinity, 8-1, on September 21 with Mate posting the lone Bantam victory at No. 2 singles.
