Visits Williams in NCAA First Round |
HARTFORD, Conn., May 9 -- The Trinity College women’s tennis team, which has a 9-4 record and finished third at the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championships, will be the No. 4 seed at the NCAA Division III Northeast Sub-Regional Championships this weekend at Williams College.
Trinity, which is ranked fifth in the East and 17th in the nation, will face No. 1-seeded Williams on Saturday, May 12 . The Bantams, coached by Wendy Bartlett, are making their second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. No. 2-seeded Tufts will play No. 3-seeded Vassar in the other first round match, and the winners will face off on Sunday, May 13.
NESCAC Freshman of the Year Diana Goldman (Braintree, Mass.) posted a 16-6 overall record this season at the No. 1 singles position, earning all-league honors. Senior co-captain Olga Bogatyrenko (Kharkov, Ukraine) was 14-5 at No. 4 singles and junior co-captain Rebekah Mate (Bellevue, Wash.) had a 13-6 overall mark at No. 3 singles. Sophomores Courtney Sargeant (Attleboro, Mass.) and Karen Huebner (Burlington, Mass.) were 12-10 and 11-7 at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
In doubles, mate and Sargeant emerged as the No. 1 tandem, finishing with a 9-8 overall mark. Bogatyrenko and freshman Sarah Krueger (Burlington, Vt.) posted a 10-7 record at No. 2 doubles, while Goldman and Huebner had a team-high 11 wins and seven losses at No. 3 doubles. Krueger also recorded a 10-10 mark at No. 6 singles.
Williams, coached by Julie Greenwood, is 14-1 and won the NESCAC Championship title. The Ephs defeated Trinity, 8-1, on April 27 and ousted the Bantams in the NCAA Championship second round, 8-1, last season.
