Six Bantams Finish Ranked Among Nation’s Top 40

Hartford, Conn., Mar. 19 - Trinity College sophomores Amina Helal (Manchester, England) and Pam Saunders (Harare, Zimbabwe) and freshman Lynn Leong (Kota Bharu, Malaysia) were all selected as Women’s Intercollegiate Squash Association (WISA) 2001-02 First Team All-Americans.

Three other Bantams were ranked among the top 40 players in the nation as the season ended. Behind Helal at No. 1, Leong at No. 2, and Saunders at No. 8, Trinity senior co-captains Samantha Lewins (Bromley, Zimbabwe) and Mollie Anderson (Buffalo, N.Y.) were ranked No. 24 and No. 25, respectively, while sophomore Carolynne Minkowski (Baltimore, Md.) finished as the No. 32 player.

The Bantams, coached by Wendy Bartlett, posted a perfect 11-0 overall record, capturing its second straight Dual Match Season title and its first WISA Team Championship (Howe Cup) title.

Helal, a First Team All-American last season as well, posted a team-best 17-0 record playing at the No. 1 position for the Bantams. She won both the midseason Constable tournament title and the WISA Singles Championship title (first Trinity player to win it). Helal was also a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Academic selection this season.

Saunders, a Second Team All-American selection last season, posted a 15-5 mark (8-2 in dual matches) this season, playing predominantly at the No. 3 position. She won WISA Singles Consolation Championship title to end the season.

Leong had a 17-2 record (10-0 in dual matches) in her first campaign, with both losses coming against Helal in the Constable and WISA Singles finals, respectively. She played No. 2 for the Bantams this winter.

Lewins, a two-time All-American, a three-time NESCAC All-Academic selection, Trinity’s Junior Female Scholar Athlete of the Year last season, and a WISA Scholar Athlete last season, had an 8-6 record (7-3 in dual matches) at the No. 4 position for the Bantams. Anderson was 9-7 (6-4 in dual matches) at No. 5, and Minkowski tied Helal and Leong for the team-lead in wins with 17, and lost just once (9-0 in dual matches). Minkowski finished her season by winning the WISA Singles “B” Flight title.
