| Trinity Men's Tennis Pair Wins Northeast Player and Rookie of the Year |
Hartford, Conn., May 22 - Trinity College senior co-captain Rostyslav Orach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was selected as the 2000-01 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Northeast Men’s Tennis Player of the Year. Bantam freshman Richard Lawrence (Toronto, Ontario) was named as the ITA Division III Northeast Rookie of the Year.
The Bantams, coached by Paul Assaiante, finished the 2000-01 season with a 14-5 record and finished second at the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Tournament. Trinity, ranked No. 2 in the Wingspan.com/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III East Region poll and No. 11 in the nation, qualified for its third straight NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The Bantams advanced to the second round with a 5-1 win over Bates, but lost, 5-2, against MIT in their second match.
Orach, a four-time Rolex/ITA All-American and a three-time all-league player, posted a 16-0 dual record this season and a 28-1 overall record playing at the No. 1 singles position. He won three straight-set matches at the NESCAC Championships to capture his second career No. 1 singles flight title and teamed with Lawrence to win the No. 1 doubles title. Orach, the all-time winningest player in College history with a 72-10 mark, was selected the NESCAC Player of the Year this spring. The No. 2-ranked Division III singles player in the nation, he and Lawrence are currently competing in the NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Championships at DePauw University.
Lawrence, who is 16-1 in dual matches and 22-3 overall for the Bantams, was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year and to the All-NESCAC first team. He is the No. 17-ranked Division III singles player in the nation. The duo, ranked No. 2 in the nation among Division III doubles pairs, posted a 9-1 dual record and a 24-3 overall mark in doubles this season. Lawrence lost in three sets in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Singles Championships yesterday.
