TRINITY TENNIS AND LACROSSE TEAMS COMPETE IN POST-SEASON TOURNEYS |
Hartford, Conn.- The Trinity College men's tennis team, coached by Paul Assaiante, advanced to its first-ever NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. The Bantams finished the regular season with a 13-1 record, and finished second out of 11 teams at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championships. Trinity will face host East Regional host Swarthmore College on Sat., May 8 in one regional semifinal match, while NESCAC rivals Williams College and Amherst College will face off in the other semifinal. The winners will play each other in the regional final on Sunday, May 9 with the winner advancing to the Nationals at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont, Calif.
The Trinity women's lacrosse team earned its ninth consecutive bid to the posts-season and its sixth bid to the ECAC Division III New England Championship Tournament, after finishing the 1999 regular season with an 8-4 record. The Bantams are seeded third and will host #6 Wellesley College (12-5) on Wed., May 5 at 3:00. The winner will play in the semifinals against #2 Connecticut College (10-4) on Sat., May 8 at 2:00. The semifinal and final rounds will take place at top-seeded Williams College (8-3), who faces the winner of #4 Colby College vs. #5 Tufts University.
The Bantam tennis squad boasts two of the top singles players in Division III, as both sophomore Rostyslav Orach (New York, N.Y.) and junior Artem Gonopolskiy (Brooklyn, N.Y.) have already qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships as singles players and as a doubles tandem. Orach is 11-1 and Gonopolskiy is 10-2 in singles matches, and the duo has compiled a 9-3 record playing number-one doubles. Junior captain Steve Wohlford (Glen Carbon, Ill.) and junior Matt Sharnoff (Orange, Conn.) have exceled as a doubles team as well with a 12-1 record, while junior Alex Valente (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Jared Shiekh (Woodbury, Conn.) have combined for a 16-6 singles mark.
The Bantam women's lacrosse squad, coached by Robin Sheppard, is led by a quartet of talented seniors in attacks Nancy Dwyer (Bedford, N.Y.) and Whitney Scarlett (Morristown, N.J.) and midfielders Dorothy Cavanagh (Middleburg, Va.) and Alix Johnston (Mount Kisco, N.Y.). The foursome has combined to score 135 of the team's 184 goals and dished out 52 of 67 assists this spring. Juniors Jess Martin (Alexandria, Va.), a speedy midfielder, and Kristen Arnold (Longmeadow, Mass.), a defender, have emerged as two of the better all-around players in New England, and classmate Kate Derosier (Longmeadow, Mass.) is a consistent force in goal with 153 stops for a .591 save percentage and a 9.49 GAA.
