DEFENSE POWERS TRINITY FOOTBALL
TO WIN OVER BOWDOIN
Hartford, CT - Senior linebacker Jeff Iudice (Melrose, MA) notched 18 tackles, one forced fumble, one interception, and 2.5 sacks to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 26-0 win over the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in New England Small College Athletic Conference football action this afternoon.
Trinity, who improves their season record to 4-1 with its third straight win, forced six turnovers in the triumph. Bowdoin falls to 1-4.
The Trinity defense held the Polar Bears to 217 yards, most of which came after the game was well out of reach, and had five interceptions, one fumble recovery, and five sacks. Senior safety Sean Joyce (Quincy, MA) intercepted a pass with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown to give Trinity a 7-0 lead. Sophomore Steve Cella (Peabody, MA) had six tackles and his seventh interception of the season, while senior linebacker Dale Phelps (Pittsfield, MA) added eight tackles, two tackles for losses, and one interception.
Offensively, Trinity struggled as well, but the Bantams were able to capitalize on excellent field position with three scores. Senior quarterback Gregg Wysocki (New Britain, CT) hit freshman wide receiver Kevin Waters (Garden City, NY) with a five-yard touchdown pass with 9:20 left in the second quarter, and freshman tailback Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, MA) scored on an 18-yard run with 1:09 remaining in the half to give Trinity a 19-0 lead at the intermission.
Fabrizio finished the day with 22 carries for 95 yards and two touchdowns, and sophomore tailback Julian Gratry (Chagrin Falls, OH) gained 71 yards on eight carries. Trinity gained 234 yards on the ground on 45 carries for a 5.4 per-carry average.
Senior tailback Chris Houston (Winslow, ME) gained 51 yards on 15 carries and junior tight end Rich Bolduc (Auburn, NH) caught four passes for 61 yards.
Junior linebacker Nick Krol (Acton, MA) led the Bowdoin defense with eight tackles and junior defensive back Mike OBrien (Canton, MA) picked off two Trinity passes.
Both quarterbacks struggled in the game. Wysocki completed seven of 26 passes for 66 yards and two interceptions, and the Bantams did not complete a pass in the second half. Junior Kyle Quinn (Canton, MA) and sophomore Travis Cummings (Millinocket, ME) combined to complete 10 of 36 passes for 125 yards and five interceptions.
