Tierney Named Head Field Hockey and Lacrosse Coach

Trinity College

HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 3 -- Trinity College today began a new era in its women's lacrosse and field hockey programs, naming veteran coach and former All-American Kara Tierney as the head coach for both teams.

Tierney joins Trinity from Franklin & Marshall College, where she had been the head coach for field hockey and women's lacrosse for the past three seasons. She compiled a field hockey record of 15-42 and a lacrosse record of 27-19 at Franklin & Marshall. She also was named the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) regional Coach of the Year in 1998 and coached in the 1999 Division III STX North/South All-Star Game.

Tierney replaces Robin Sheppard who retired from coaching to become associate athletic director at Trinity. Sheppard had served as coach of women's lacrosse and field hockey for 25 seasons and compiled a combined record of 453-135-18 that included 43 winning teams and seven NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearances. Her 1998 Trinity field hockey squad advanced to its second NCAA Final Four last fall.

Tierney is a 1994 graduate of Amherst College with a B.A. in geology. She played both field hockey and lacrosse for the Lady Jeffs. In field hockey, Tierney was a three-time All-New England selection and a third team All-American selection as a senior.

Tierney served as an assistant field hockey and lacrosse coach at Gettysburg College and Franklin & Marshall prior to 1996. She also has coached in the United States Field Hockey Association (USFHA) Futures program. While at Franklin & Marshall she served on several committees, including the STX North/South Senior All-Star Game Selection Committee, the Women's Lacrosse All-America Selection Committee, and the South Atlantic Regional Advisory Committee.
