Trinity Football Hosts Williams

HARTFORD, CT- The Trinity College football team, which defeated Colby College, 35-3, in the season opener last Saturday, will host the 1-0 Williams College Ephs on Sat., Oct. 2 at 1:30 p.m. at Dan Jessee Field in the 1999 home-opener for the Bantams. Trinity looks to improve to 2-0 under first-year Head Coach Bill Decker, and to avenge two consecutive losses against the Ephs. Trinity is currently ranked seventh in the ECAC Division III New England Poll, while Williams is third.

The Trinity defense was solid against Colby, led by sophomore safety Steve Cella (Peabody, MA) who recovered a fumble and returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown. Cella was named the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance. Trinity held the White Mules to just 102 passing yards and forced four turnovers. Senior linebackers Brian LaHaie (Silver Spring, MD) and Jeff Iudice (Melrose, MA) combined for 19 tackles, with three of LaHaie's stops resulting in Colby losses.

Bantam senior quarterback Gregg Wysocki (New Britain, CT) completed 17 of 26 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown, and ran for a second score to pace the offense. Senior wide receiver Mike Healey (Newburyport, MA) caught three passes for 71 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown catch.

Special teams played an integral part in the Bantam victory, as junior linebacker Trevor Jackson (San Francisco, CA) blocked a Colby punt and junior defensive back Charles Botts (Boston, MA) returned it 19 yards for a touchdown. Senior kicker Andy Reimer (Scarsdale, NY) was five for five on extra-point tries.

Williams easily won their 12th consecutive season opener last week with a 42-0 thrashing of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME. Senior co-captain quarterback Sean Keenan earned NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week. completing 16 of 22 passes for 222 yards and five touchdowns. Junior Matt Student caught three Keenan passes, including two in the end zone. The Eph defense shut out the Polar Bears for the second straight year, allowing just 97 yards in total offense.

Williams, coached by Dick Farley (12th season, 76-11-3), leads the all-time series, 30-25-2. The Ephs downed Trinity, 34-6, in 1998 in Williamstown, MA. Keenan threw for 197 yards and one touchdown, and Dan DiCenzo scored on an 18-yard fumble return for Williams. Trinity senior wide receiver Sean Furey (Winchester, MA) caught seven passes for 101 yards in the game (then playing tight end), while Iudice paced the Bantam defense with 10 tackles.
